He turns around to reveal a pair of clawed arms and a swirling vortex of past and future in lue of a face. The creature emits an otherwordly scream and attacks. The aagrahs are strange beings that hail from the folds of time. They seem to seek out chronomancers and other beings who meddle with the timeline. They enter replacing some adjacent being, catching the person in question by horrified suprise and attacking them. Aagrahs seem to understand all known languages, but do not speak. Combat: Gaze of Ages(su): this attack takes effect when a creature gazes into its "face". This functions as a gaze attack, except that creatures trying to look away only have a 25% chance of success. This attack has a range of 90ft, and forces the creature to make a will save dc:15 or be slowed for 2 rounds. Timeslash(su): A creature struck by an aagrah's claw attack must make a will save dc:15 or be sent one round into the future and have its initiative count drop by 1. The glowing blue wound seems to spread and engulf it, and it reappears on the aagrah's turn. Uncasting(su): A spell that fails to overcome an aagrah's spell resistance by 4 or more points is uncast, the person is forced to take the spells casting time to undo the spell, saying magic words backwards and moving their hands in the reverse gestures. They take an amount of subdual damage equal to the spell level as the magical energy shoots back through their body. Temporal Vortex(su): Once per day an aagrah can expand its vortex to draw people in. This creates a 30ft cone of swirling blue energy spirals. Creatures within must make a reflex save dc:19 (+2 racial) or be drawn into the cyclone. The aagrah and teh creatures taken are transported to a shadowy demiplane, similar to the ethereal plane, created by the aagrah's power. This plane has a total diameter of 90ft, and within it, the aagrah's timeslash ability sends creatures 1d4 rounds into the future, it gains the benefits of blur, haste, and displacement, and all its time-related supernatural abilities gain a +2 enhancement bonus to their dcs. After 1d12 minutes, this plane fades and those within it reappear on the normal plane, taking 1d10 teleportation damage from displacement if overlapping solid objects at the time. If the creature is slain, the plane dissolves instantly, and all the creatures in it take 1d6 subdual damage. Interject Likeness(su): An aagrah can replace a nearby humanoid or monstrous humanoid creature, temporarily taking on that creature's likeness as if by a disguise self spell that lasts 10 minutes. They take time to blend in and fall out of attention so they can turn away and get a suprise attack. When they are slain or banished, the person is returned to their original posiiton in the timestream 1d8 hours later. Alien Mind: An aagrah is immune to all known mind-affecting effects. Eon Physiology(ex): An aagrah does not have biotic functioning like that of mortal organisms. It is immune to all non-magical diseases and poisons, it does not need to breathe in any clearly discernable way, a slow spell cast on it deals 2d8 damage +1 per caster level, a haste spell cast on it heals 2d8 damage plus one per caster level, and if a time spell is cast within 60ft of it, the aagrah must make an opposed charisma check with the caster or be banished. Temporal Insight: An aagrah's limited sight into the future grants it a +2 insight bonus to attack rolls and AC. |
| Antioch06-23-05, 12:50 AM | An interesting critter you got here. Why does it attack chronomancers though? Reminds me of a kind of inevitable. What exactly does the time subtype imply also? It doesnt sound necessary. Also, why is it a shapeshifter? Since you arent supposed to put bonuses in attack forms, just add a new ability called Temporal Insight: Aagrah's ability to perceive hints of the future provides it with a +2 insight bonus to attacks and its armor class. For uncasting, have it apply whenever a caster fails to overcome its SR, but allow a Will save to negate the damage. Also, instead of base damage, have it inflict damage based on the spell's level (1/level, 1d4/level, or 1d6/level). Have the gaze attack work normally and slow victims for 1d4 rounds. |
| Iron Cobra06-23-05, 01:27 AM | Too many wierd monsters, take a break. Quality > Quantity |
| Antioch06-23-05, 01:41 AM | Are you referring to what Finger has done, or just in general? I've not bothered to look at the rest of his works. |
| Iron Cobra06-23-05, 02:14 AM | All over, in general. In reference to most, if not all of Finger's works. |
| Great Cthulhu06-23-05, 02:14 AM | Too many wierd monsters, take a break. Quality > Quantity Might I question what's wrong with the quantity of his monsters? Anydangway, you've created another terrific monster, El Finger. I don't know where you come up with this, but it's just great. |
| Iron Cobra06-23-05, 02:16 AM | Aliens from outer space? Chaos Clown? Crawling arms? Some of these would seem to fit d20 modern better. |
| Great Cthulhu06-23-05, 02:20 AM | Aliens from outer space? Chaos Clown? Crawling arms? Some of these would seem to fit d20 modern better. Well then use them in a d20 modern campaign instead. Did anyone say you had to use them in D&D? |
| Antioch06-23-05, 02:23 AM | And why is that? Is it because many people have a universal paradigm as to what belongs and does not belong in a midieval fantasy? Psionics arent fantasy, monks arent fantasy, interplanetary travel isnt fantasy. Whats the deal? All of this fits into fantasy, and frankly I'm glad for the change. |
| Iron Cobra06-23-05, 02:48 AM | Wierd and strange, even downright bizarre and dare I say "out of place" can exist in D&D, don't act as if it can't. |
| Antioch06-23-05, 03:11 AM | I didnt say it cant, and my post was pretty clear I had though. To clarify, I'm all for aliens (spaceships and all), psionics, and the abudance of other things that people tend to tout shouldnt exist in D&D. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-23-05, 09:00 AM | Antioch: The original idea behind these was some horrible thing that pops up when you mess around with the space-time continuum. Iron Cobra: I feel this your comments are baseless and unnecisary. There is no inverse relationship between the quality and quantity of my work. I do not create monsters to meet some weekly schedule or monthly quota. I get an idea for a creature, I think about it, and then I post it. Sometimes I have one idea only for a long time, sometimes I have many in a short time. I do not take into consideration the rate at which the others are produced as a basis for my current works. Chaos Clown: An idea I had involved making a clown-like monster that wasn't evil. Since travelling minstrils, buffoons, and similar entertainers began around the early middle ages, I fail to see how this creature is an anachronism. Crawling Arms: These were part of a cycle of lesser undead created with the idea in mind of using every part of the body. Since the crawling claw from monsters of faerun only uses the left hand, and there are a few spells that make use of the skull, this seemed an uncharacteristically wasteful attitude for a necromancer to treat the arms, innards, and legs with. Aliens from outer space: I don't recall making any creatures specifically called "aliens", although I did create undead from outer space and a stellar creature template. Firstly, these were mainly oriented towards a custom plane I created with a somewhat interstellar build to it. The voidborne themselves could just as easily be undead from the plane of vaccume and the stellar burnth from the plane of ash. As a general rebuttle, I quote you with Wierd and strange, even downright bizarre and dare I say "out of place" can exist in D&D, don't act as if it can't. |
| Iron Cobra06-23-05, 11:13 AM | I rest my case ^ when someone has to justify their monster with half baked excuses and long winded ones at that. Need I remind you, justify. By the way, unless it's meant for 3.0, it's DR 10 / Magic |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-23-05, 02:50 PM | I feel compelled to justify and/or defend my creations whenever somebody tells me I shouldn't have made them. What else am I supposed to say? "Oh, you're right, I'll just delete half of them and stop making new ones." If I didn't "justify" my monsters, you'd probably say it was proof that I couldn't even defend them. Honestly, I think you could do with some "justifying" yourself, as in justify your coming and telling me that I should stop making my creatures, while heaping vague accusations of inadequacy. If there's a flaw with the mechanics or flavor, you can just tell me that and I will either correct it or explain why I don't feel the need to. If, as seems more likely, my monsters offend your personal tastes, you can simply not read them. It's not that hard to avoid, my name's write next to each of the links. I am aware that the new version uses DR 10/Magic, however I prefer to use the 3.0 damage reduction system. Finally, my "justifications" are not long-winded because my creations are somehow lacking in quality for defense, but simply because I am myself a long-winded person, as is no doubt now perfectly clear. |
| CthulhuRyleh06-24-05, 02:49 AM | Interesting, but cool. possible relation to the Phane? |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-24-05, 06:03 PM | What exactly are these "Phane" of which you speak? |
| Antioch06-24-05, 06:13 PM | Ah, thanks for the clarification. I wasnt sure if this was something that by default would require the inclusion of said chronomancer class or whatnot. Kind of reminds me of Wrinkle from Mage: The Ascension. Also, woots, you used my suggestion. ^^ I prefer to kindly suggest advice rather than bashing on someone's monster when at all possible. As for IC, I also find it odd that you accuse me of saying that these things dont belong in D&D, though I said they should, then you say they should. Really, his name is pretty obvious, as is the nature of what he is posting, so just dont read them. |
| Mithral Icesilver06-24-05, 06:19 PM | Interesting note: by switching a few letters in the name Aagrah, you come up with the word Aaargh. Which perfectly describes what one's reaction would be when meeting this monster :schemes:. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-24-05, 06:28 PM | Thank you. Mithral: Actually, the answer is simpler. When you see it, you go "AA!", and it says "GRAH!" |
| D&D_Madness 500006-24-05, 06:35 PM | Or maybe, when you beat it, you go haa! Then it goes, gar! Then it runs up to you, and sends you to a time-continum where you stay for 200 years, before quickly dying... |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-24-05, 09:21 PM | 0_o ...no. |
| Great Cthulhu06-24-05, 09:48 PM | Aliens from outer space: I don't recall making any creatures specifically called "aliens", although I did create undead from outer space and a stellar creature template. Firstly, these were mainly oriented towards a custom plane I created with a somewhat interstellar build to it. The voidborne themselves could just as easily be undead from the plane of vaccume and the stellar burnth from the plane of ash. He might mean those headless men from Mars that you made. (0ne of my favorite monster posts of yours, BTW. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-24-05, 09:51 PM | Ah, hadn't thought about that. o.< Oh well, I don't care about his opinion anymore. :/ |
| CthulhuRyleh06-24-05, 11:55 PM | What exactly are these "Phane" of which you speak? epic level hanbook monster from out of time |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-25-05, 01:11 AM | Ooohhh, the time/fate abominations. In that case, no. Absolutely no possible relation to the thane. As different from the thane as an imp is from orcus. |
| Antioch06-25-05, 03:14 AM | Ah, hadn't thought about that. o.< Oh well, I don't care about his opinion anymore. :/ And neither does anyone else I'd wager. How many monsters HAVE you generated by the by? |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-25-05, 12:46 PM | Not sure, I don't keep count. The monster archive has most of my creatures, but I don't remember to submit all of them there, and some of my entries have more than one monster. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-25-05, 01:02 PM | So, how does the CR look? >>; |
| Desvelar06-25-05, 05:35 PM | I used these guys last night and ouch it is not a cr4 has to be more cuase with three of them they nearly killed my party luckly they had a healing paly(I was dm) Party 7th Rouge 7th Rouge 7th Palidin 5th Monk (Had a level adjustment so ecl 7 7th Rouge |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-25-05, 05:46 PM | Well, it is possible it turned out that way because you have absolutely know primary spellcasters and only one secondary caster. Rogues aren't much without stealth and frontline. With their poor will and fortitude saves I imagine they were being slowed and tossed forward through the timeline all out. What race was the level adjusted creature? It still seems like it should be higher than 4, but its hard to get a good estimate from such a limited party. Thanks for the test anyway. |
| Desvelar06-25-05, 06:07 PM | I was missing our psonic he was gone and the monk did the best he was my custom race look in my sigg its top one the Innuo Lupes. It really agetated my player becuase they would have flanking but then one of them wold dissappear so they wouldnt have it. Everyone else was a human edit scratch one of the rogues it was a barbarian 7th level (he forgot to rage) ps Could you comment on my race |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-25-05, 07:09 PM | Yeah. I was thinking that with these creatures always getting the suprise round and shoving people out of time there won't be many sneak attacks going on. I should probably add power resistance. How many of them had weapons to penetrate the DR? How did the vortex ability pan out? Sure I'll comment on your race. |
| Desvelar06-26-05, 05:02 AM | A.I dunno what dr peircing is B.For vortex and time slashyou should make it hire if your going to have a higher cr becuase will saves and reflex saves will be alot higher. C.Vortex was fun there was a problem though I had a player stuck in time lash when monster died(question does vortex area close when monster die becuase thats what I did) I just made him take 2d10 teleport but my origanl thought was that he would be stuck out there. D.All faceless time mosters get bonus in that area right? E. You should make it optional to get in instead of reflex save(only have it if they dont wan to. Also can I create the template for this guy I want to strt using him more he is fun. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-26-05, 09:45 AM | A. You know, getting past the damage reduction. Like, if the monster has DR10/+1, somebody with a +1 longsword could do the full 1d8+strength, without having 10 subtracted from the damage. B. Well, for that I'd need to give it a racial DC bonus or something. Your players seemed unable to make their saves though. C. That wouldn't happen. When the monster dies, the time vortex it generated goes away, so he'd pop up afterwards in normal time-space. D...you know, I never really worked that out. Even though I put down 2-4 in the organization, I never considered the possibility of multiple such creatures. I'd say that the other ones share the bonus only if it lets them, since each Time Vortex is that Aagrah's own personal reality. E. Why would I make it optional? I mean, why would anybody willingly be sucked by a monster into a super-time demiplane isolated from friends and help where the monsters your facing have dramatically increased powers? There is no template. The creatures are not a modified version of people, their outward resemblance to a humanoid listed in the time substitution ability is as far as it goes. The merely shunt into the timestream to replace a humanoid being. Their actual form has no relevance to the person's shape or nature, and it is the way they appear within their swirling vortex. A dark cyclone in lue of legs, slowing and condensing into a monstrous rotating mass from which protrude long slashing talons, almost like tentacles, cruel whips snapping you further into the future, a face, a face that is the unvirse, past, present, and future, all in one, at once surrounding you and concentrated in that one point ahead. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-26-05, 09:46 AM | PS: I commented on your race. You haven't responded yet. |
| Desvelar06-27-05, 09:41 PM | About E. If I where level 10 and had an apprentice level 4 I skrew arround with time then they come I know my apprentice will get sucked in so I jump in to to help him A. Becuase it is my fualt they came B. Becuase I can Handle it. after awhile of my party was getting there ass kicked I stopped the gaze and haste and speed bonus. Way to strong on my Ill respond right know. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.06-27-05, 10:29 PM | Well I think you can always choose to fail a save. |
| Desvelar06-27-05, 10:51 PM | Today I just ran the monster as a cr8 andbuffed up healh to about 40-80 and made the timelash save higher. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-03-05, 07:08 PM | How did it do? How did you increase its hit points? Did you add hit dice or just boost its con? What about the dc? Did you give it an ability focus feat or a racial bonus to the DC or did you just up its charisma? |
| Desvelar07-03-05, 07:46 PM | How did it do? How did you increase its hit points? Did you add hit dice or just boost its con? What about the dc? Did you give it an ability focus feat or a racial bonus to the DC or did you just up its charisma? It went well I upgrade HD and con I raised the will save on timelash |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-03-05, 08:06 PM | How much did you increase the HD and consitition? What did you use to increase the dc? Can I get a second opinion on these creatures? |
| OverzealousMephit07-03-05, 08:06 PM | I really like this monster. It reminds me of one of my favourite monsters, the Phane from the 3e Epic Level Handbook, time themed monsters are cool. |
| Desvelar07-03-05, 08:17 PM | How much did you increase the HD and consitition? What did you use to increase the dc? Can I get a second opinion on these creatures? for my level 8s I madde it about a 50-70(sry I lost the sheet where I marked down incerments will save 18-20 What is my opinion bad(j/k) |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-03-05, 08:21 PM | Well, I need to know how they were worked out, since constitution will affect fortitude saves and hit dice affects lots of things, while charisma will effect the DC of every other save. |
| Desvelar07-03-05, 08:23 PM | I boosted that quitte a bit for some of my players since some of them are freakin munchkins ALso you might want to add that a time monster can stop someone from entering or resist it becuase I had 1 on three but it can only handle one or two munchkins and all three lept in it was over fast but then I had 6 appear for vengence(payback time munchkins) |
| Desvelar07-03-05, 08:25 PM | Well, I need to know how they were worked out, since constitution will affect fortitude saves and hit dice affects lots of things, while charisma will effect the DC of every other save. I didnt raise charisma I just raised the save and by friday night I will have a revised version becuase I have been using this monster alot on my players its becoming my favprite. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-03-05, 08:40 PM | Saves don't just increase arbitrarily, they use the formula of 10+1/2hd+cha mod, and sometimes a +2 racial bonus and/or boost from the ability focus feat. I'm flattered to hear that it's become your favorite monster. :D |
| Elrathh07-04-05, 11:03 AM | I have a question here, why make him CR4 when any person who can do time travel would be at least 15+ in level? |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-04-05, 11:30 AM | There is magic available that messes with space-time before you reach that level. Also don't forget the possibility of plot hooks and magic items. In general though, I usually just create a monster, and then assign a CR based on how it turned out. However, with recent information I'm unsure whether CR4 is accurate. |
