Fair Encounter??? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Combat
Green dragons initiate fights with little or no provocation, picking on creatures of any size. If the target is intriguing or seems formidable, the dragon stalks the creature to determine the best time to strike and the most appropriate tactics to use. If the target appears weak, the dragon makes its presence known quickly—it enjoys
evoking terror. Sometimes the dragon elects to control a humanoid creature through intimidation and suggestion. Green dragons especially like to question adventurers to learn more about their society and abilities, what is going on in the countryside, and if there is treasure nearby.

This is the BBEG for my next adventure. The party of 6 will be gaining 2nd level in the middle of the adventure. The party consists of
Barbarian
Fighter
Cleric
Rouge
Rouge
Scout

Do you think that this will be a fair encounter? Also what sort of Minions would a dragon of this type employee? What I was thinking of was making this a major enemy later on. when the dragon grows up!

02-13-07, 11:20 AM If you mean for this dragon to attack the party at level 2 they are going to have some pretty significant problems. Like getting tromped. then again you have a lot of players and heavy melee so as long as they aren't too badly hurt when the fight starts they should be good.
As for minions, green dragons like the forest so spiders are fun, maybe some low level evil fey (fiendish grigs anyone?). Being that weak of a dragon goblin infested forest would work ok without being too overwhelming.

02-13-07, 12:52 PM Do you think that this will be a fair encounter?The CR is very reasonable, although you could abuse this in the right situation such as strafing runs with a 4d6 breath weapon vs. the PCs in the open. Throwing this at them without warning when they are really low on resources.
Also what sort of Minions would a dragon of this type employee? What I was thinking of was making this a major enemy later on. when the dragon grows up!Kobold worshipers was my first thought.

02-13-07, 06:44 PM well, I really would like to keep my players alive thru at least 3rd level before I smash them!! I have a good feeling about most of my players. I have my wife and my bestfriends wife ( both playing rouges ) who are really new to the game.

I have my wife and my bestfriends wife ( both playing rouges ) who are really new to the game.Well if you tell them to play something that actually adds something to the group's fighting power instead of just improving looks (e.g. by playing rogues ;)), the effective party level will be 3, making this a 'very difficult' encounter which I'd consider to be appropriate for a BBEG encounter - unless they are ambushed/surprised (which would/should increase the encounter level).

However, whenever dragons are involved you should be prepared for the occasional dead character. Something as 'harmless' as a failed save against the breath weapon can do it.

Using the 'Action Point' rules may help to improve their odds, too. Do you use them?
