I've had a couple of vague ideas for new familiars, but I barely know about balancing races and classes, let alone monsters that THEN have to be balanced as familiars. So I come to this board for help.

First concept (the simpler one): Attack Familiar
While some are given in complete warrior, I don't really like the ones that are there. Why not, like, a wolf or large dog or something? A good wolf, possibly with advanced hit dice or a template. This I could make with the rules in the SRD, but I have no clue how to balance it as an improved familiar, if it's even a good idea. Again, the idea here is to have a familiar that can aid you in combat, at least in early levels, like a Druid's animal companion. Or is this useless?

Second concept: Magical Transforming Animal
A little animal or magical beast that can take a humanoid form and thus manipulate objects. Many uses - fetch things out of a normal animal's reach, sneak in through the tiny hole and open the front door for its master... heck, if it's smart enough, maybe you can even teach it to read or something. I admit I got the idea from Ryo-ohki and her ability to take humanoid forms, so my mental image is that of a cute & fuzzy, harmless-looking Tiny animal that can turn into a medium humanoid, but variations might fit too.
Probably should be a magical beast with intelligence of a human child or less. No clue how to stat it, let alone balance it as a familiar.

P.S. How do I make those spoiler buttons? My long sig could use some.

:bump: Bumping because forum-goers seem to be more active at night, plus everyone's bumping their monster threads, which means I'll probably just be lost in the swarm but oh well.

I guess I was vague on what I mean by attack animal. I'm not too sure myself... I guess what I need is a guide for converting a given animal or magical beast into a familiar (with Improved Familiar level).
