hey there. i'm looking through the Monsters of Faerun book, and the Eyeball as a familiar has intruiged me. How useable is this still, what changes (if any) would be needed, and what would be the quickest requirements for a Wizard to get one of these guys?

FRCS has the Eyeball as a potential candidate familiar allowable with the Improved Familiar feat. You need a caster level of 5 to pick one.

As to finding one, that may take a little more work. Monsters of Faerun states that several evil wizard organisations have independently bred eyeballs. Maybe you can check there.

If you're playing Planescape, Gzemnid has a realm in the Outlands populated by lots of beholderkin (including spectators). You might be able to find a willing familiar there.

Otherwise, you could try Seamusxanthuszenus, the "Mephit With the Hat", who runs a "pet store" called Parts & Pieces in the Great Bazaar in Sigil. Maybe if he doesn't have any "live" Eyeballs in stock, you could buy a dead one and animate it?

I ran a game once with an Alienist wizard with an Eyeball familiar. It was fun. The Spellray ability is pretty useful, especially for spells like "Vampiric Touch". Especially if you use the "share spells" familiar ability. It also makes the Spectral Hand spell somewhat worthless, but it costs a feat, so I have no issues with that. Note that the Spellray description does not limit itself to Arcane splls, so a Mystic Theurge could cast Cure spells on allies from 35 ft away, or even better, a Harm spell.

Due to a moving mishap I have lost my FRCS. Could anyone send me the stats on the eyeball?
