Dear Forum:

I need several creatures that might be found on the far realm, including one in the CR 13-20 range. I own the MM, the MM2, the FF, and MM3.

Any suggestions?

-Tony

P.S. I you are suggesting the pseudonatural template, also suggest a cool base creature.

look for the monster archive.

there are a few low and high level monsters from the far realm in there.

you're right, there must be a good base creature from the far realm.

No, they do not. They seem cool, but they are evil for no good reason.

They far realms are not about evil, and not about chaos. The far realms are alignment: none, or at the closest alignment: any.

I'll show you some real far realms creatures.

With base creatures, I find that the Quaraphon, Grick and monstrous spiders make appealing base creatures.

They far realms are not about evil, and not about chaos. The far realms are alignment: none, or at the closest alignment: any.

Which is why every last entity from the Far Realm (singular, not plural) in The Gates of Firestorm Peak is Chaotic Neutral. All of them. The Neh-thagglu, the Brood Gibberlings, the Bloodsippers, and the Wystes.

Because the R&D department has a nasty tendency to hand over far realms material to a handful of deranged gibbons.

You will note that in Manual of the Planes far realms has the alignment trait: none. The pseudonatural template has Alignment: any.

And in the dragon special on the far realms, none of them where chaotic.

Dragon 330 has some of my favorite Far Realm beasties ever. I love using the cranial encyster. It can force low-level PCs to commit suicide if they fail a saving throw.:evillaugh

The Far Realm was invented for The Gates of Firestorm Peak. It's the primary source.

Okay....

The Far Realm was never mentioned before The Gates of Firestorm Peak. This article (http://www.planewalker.com/encyclopedia/encyclopedia.php?intEntryID=59), for example, mentions The Gates of Firestorm Peak as one of its sources (which, incidentally, comprises all appearances of the Far Realm in DnD products). Out of all those sources, The Gates of Firestone Peak was the earliest.

Granted, that article was not the best researched, as it fails to conclusively state that entities from the Far Realm cannot survive without the energies from it, a fact that has been part of the canon since the Far Realm's introduction. However, it was better than the only other source on the first 20-odd pages of Google.

While the Far Realm itself is not necessarily Chaotic (And indeed, cannot be, as it lies outside the Multiverse and thus alignment.), the creatures from it that travel to the Multiverse become Chaotic. It's the closest fit for them.

Alright then.

Point blank, having the far realms as a place of chaos seems bellittling to something that's supposed to be outside the whole great wheel. Any sampling provided in a single event is only a fraction from which to judge a multiverse.

Or, to put it another why, I'm rather stubborn and petulant and I don't want to back down from what I see as the "right" way of something, even if every other accepted source contradicts it, and if necisary will resort to saying that my way is correct on the rather dubious and subjective grounds that it's cooler.

Also, there have been mention of the far realms in published material, the aformentioned manual of the planes and in tome and blood.

Did I say there wasn't? No, I didn't. All I said was that the earliest mention was in The Gates of Firestorm Peak, back in the days of that thing that came before 3e that people played. What was it called again?

The semantics aside, since the Far Realm exists outside of the multiverse, would it be completely unreasonable to theorize that the place where the vestiges are could be something like an ethereal or astral plane of the Far Realm? I mean, apparently they come from a place that doesn't exist... but how would you define that? Could a proto-form of the insanity and reality-defying existence of that place start to begin to explain the continuuity of things that have none?

I haven't done the reseach to see if the Persodunal [sp] template can be added to a humanoid. But i would suggest that you add it to a Aarokacra, in the Races of FAERUN.
A creture with 90 as it's fly speed that had tenticles popping out of everywhere on it would be pretty dang cool, and would be a great battle. I love attacks from above.

Sorry, but I have to say this. That was the worst misspelling of pseudonatural I have ever seen. Even funnier, you were actually trying to spell it, and it was already said in the thread!

I'd say that creatures created by the Kaorti are best. I believe that the FF says that they became evil because they were twisted into a form of madness, and they began to act, by the standards of the multiverse, evil.
