Many creatures can be explained by insane wizards. Owlbears, hippogriffs, mimics, screaming dire cabbageweasels from hell, the list goes on. Not so many can be explained by insane druids. The steel crab is one. As near as can be ascertained, the line of thought was something like "Dude, wouldn't it be awesome if there was like this crab, see, but it was all made of metal". And thus, under the influence of peer pressure and not a small amount of alcohol, the druid made the fusion of organic and inorganic substances that became the steel crab. Of course, he was immediately slain by his creations, which, as demanded by narrative convienience, went rogue and escaped to the wilderness, where they bred and live to this day. Steel crabs are, with one notable exception, identical to your standard, ordinary, boilerplate giant crab, at least as standard, ordinary, and boilerplate as a crustacean that violates the laws of physics by its very existance can be. This sole exception is the iron reinforced shells that they possess. While the bulk slows their movements considerably, they are protected from most predators. Combat Steel crabs, possessing what is only a brain in the most technical sense, are not terribly complex warriors. They move up to promising looking morsels, and attempt to eat them. Should the target prove not to be edible at the time, usually by moving, they attempt to club it until it ceases to be inedible. Skills: A steel crab has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if rushed or threatened. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line. (I apologize for the thread title, but I couldn't think of anything else.) |
| Rerecros06-25-07, 09:09 PM | :D neato I'm surprised something made out of metal can swim at all, let alone twice as fast as it can crawl. Is metal apart of it's diet at all? not that such an absurdity needs a rational explaination as to where the metal in it's body comes from. |
| dknight10006-25-07, 09:13 PM | "as demanded by narrative convenience" - excellent Also, perhaps a sink speed? |

I like the stats; I have just one suggestion: Rust Vulnerability: Rusting attacks, such as the feelers of a rust monster or a rusting grasp spell, reduce the effectiveness of a steel crab's armor by literally disintegrating bits of its shell. Such effects reduce the crab's natural armor bonus by 1d4+1 points, to a minimum of +4. |
| Necroramo06-26-07, 01:44 PM | I'd lower the DR to 5, a level 4 party with standard equipment probably won't have adamantine. |
