| stone_dog02-18-04, 11:43 AM | Come on, everybody should have at least ONE time when a dragon had a really memorable impact on a game. Mine was a Brass. Pesky chatty things. Okay, so the beginning of it wasn't that origional, just read the MM for what a brass will do to a batch of new visitors, but after a day of this (they needed information and an escort across a desert) the cleric decided he had enough and cast deafness on himself. So there's the party, heads pounding as I ramble on tangent after tangent from this chatty beast and the cleric is just sitting there, smiling and nodding politely. After it was all done they questioned the cleric on his inhuman patience and resolve only hear "What? Here, let me dispel my deafness." They were pretty upset that he didn't share. What about the rest of you? Surely someone can do better than that. |
| gooru02-21-04, 11:41 AM | well... last night, a DM friend of mine asked me to "play" the dragon that his 20th level characters were fighting. it was a Great Red Wyrn and there were six members in the party. I hope it was memorable for them! The fight "started" a little early, they arrived when they were told (24 hours after the first meeting) so I had cast Elemental Swarm 25ish minutes before they arrived and rolled well on the summons (1 less large than max, 4 huge and 1 great) all walking around the woods and causing it to be more like home:). I have blindsight out to like 360 feet, and expected them through the door, but they planeshifted to another part, otherwise the elementals would have had great fun! The fight started with them spreading out. The mage of the party summoned 5 elder earth elementals, where one "ate" him and they all went under ground. My first round, I tried to "steal" am item, via a 3rd level spell from AU, and learned that I don't like spell resistence. The elementals predominantly don't notice them and I can't control them without shouting to them... but I don't know that they know my location, so I was "hiding." I had wanted to hold action, but this DM only lets an action to be held until the end of the round, not before your next action... thats why I used the spell I did. Round two began with them doing a few more buff spells and some moving even farther away. I make a couple of saves as they toss some nasty spells at me, but make them with no problem. At the end of the turn is my go. I move, use my breath weapon (dealing 127 points :r: ) and cast a quicken time stop. Then the fun begins! I roll a 1 for how long I must wait in between breaths and we were using 3.0 rules for time stop:) My first spell is a well placed Morky's Dysjunction which catches half of the party (does MD extend through the dirt?? The charcter who was swallowed was in the middle of the spell effect, but underground. His summoned friends would have, by my account gone bye-bye and he would be stuck in the dirt... but it was ruled that it did not. So, I turned A LOT of items off on a number of them and they lost all but about 2 buff spells (cast by high level mucky mucks and I was still plagued with only rolling over a 5 to either dispell or break SR ONE time!!!! :censored: ). The players didn't like this... but they really didn't like the 3 disintigration fields (from AU) I threw on three of them... making all three turn in their quarters (given by DM for uber-good RPing, which makes them auto save... basically its a potentially "free" life)... otherwise they would be deded.... DC 34 is hard to make when all your stuff turns off and you don't have a +14 fort save or better:-P Much to my annoyance, one of the players could act independently in a time stop (via an artifact which, under certain circumstances he could attack) so I got shot at a couple times and dealt a few shots, no biggie. The second round the the time stop, I can breath again... so I do... 135 points I believe... they didn't like that. I then cast another quickened disintigration field and the DM collects another quarter... the other two have SR and I rolled a 3 and a 5... The archer shooting me does a little something, but doesn't affect me. The third round of the time stop, I try a chain lightning... run into a wall with a 4. Then a quickened Dispell Magic to turn off a "You can't affect me Shere" which went off before my Time Stop and after the MD. I roll a 16 (only thing over a 5 all night on a d20!) and it goes poof! The fourth round of the time stop, I get shot at again, but it doesn't hit. I cast a quickened Quintelemental Blast the annoying bugger who keeps shooting me with arrows and then fly 200 feet away. End of time stop. All sorts of "whooses" goes off and people feel bad. I only took out one of the PCs, but someone else turned in a quarter for them, and they were just lieing there limp and wishing they were dead. WIthout the quarters and the fact that the MD should have extended into the ground, I would have killed 5 members of the party:D and had an easy time with the last remnants of what was left. However! GRR!!! The cleric yells for everyone to hold. So, they wait for his turn and ya know what he does? He casts miracle! So, I am "picked" up and moved to in front of the cleric and the rest of the party is also placed all around me... I am surprised, and they all get actions! It was ugly... the first fighter does half my hit points after a couple well placed criticals. The player to goes says "I don't like you" and does a pretty little quickened harm spell... I should be dead, after failing my save... but I turn in a quarter for the dragon... take 1/2 damage.... then, since he is a bard from the AU book, does a really nasty spell which is able to finish me off. After this person, was the other fighter who could have done more damage than the first... it was really ugly. But great fun, couldn't have asked for a better fight, unless it went more in my favor:) |
| gradea02-21-04, 06:08 PM | well, there was the first dragon i killed (an evil gold on behalf of lizardmen, go figure). basicly my group had managed to screw up the whole adventure by rolling natural ones 5 or 6 times in a row and lossing our first battle (which the DM had pumped up above what the adventure said). we were captured, and i managed to talk our way out of death, we had to take out a dragon. the groups first plan was a forward rush of doom with the 3 magic arrows we had. cute. i asked to play out this battle just to see how it would go. one round later we resumed the actuall game, we spent all our money and poison specificly ment to kill this one type of dragon, gave it an offering, and poof, our group was now the proud owners of a dragons hoard. we ran like hell after that to avoid having to pay the lizardmen. |
| Hrothgar the Dwarf02-22-04, 10:14 AM | the best dragon story our group has, and as my DM is dragon crazy.. we have a bunch, would have to be one of our first dragon encounters. We had a new guy playing in the group.. he'd played long enough to hear about dragons and get his idiot cleric up to about 7-8th level. we're in these ruins that we had made a temporary base out of, going through the place and we found an ancient library that had been preserved well enough that the books were still intact. About that time we hear a commotion outside. we all rush out and a battle has begun with our npc helper guy and a red dragon that has swooped in from the mountains in the distance.. Well, we all started fighting.. and getting our :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored:'s handed back to us from the dragon. But our friendly neighborhood cleric was helping us with some cure spells.. dragon thinks to himself "Aha.. the healer" and swoops down towards him after we've all headed back to face the Red.. he lands and smiles at the cleric in a very friendly way.. as my DM was about to explain that his character had just been charmed after failing his save (which the cleric did.... in abundance). But wait.. possibly the only time in DnD history that a spell actually had an effect on a player.. the cleric says to everybody.. "Hey guys.. I think it's ok.. he's smiling at me.. maybe he wants me to ride him!" as this new player in our group was obsessed (as I think many of us once were) as having a mighty dragon to fly around on.. So my monk says "You fool! He's tricking you! ATTACK HIM" as he is speeding back towards the fight. Now by this point we had down some mighty damage to this dragono and he was considering fleeing.. except for his last ditch effort. The dragon shows the cleric his wounds, and he begins casting a cure spell. My monk leaps in, and tries to grapple the cleric, stopping him from healing our foe while our paladin goes to town smiting the thing from behind. AFter a round of grappling that our cleric loses, he realizes he has a item that will allow him to dimensional door and does so on top of the dragon. I follow him that round and start grappling him again next round on top of the dragon.. Now, just to make this clear.. our player was confused why the rest of his party was still trying to slay this dragon.. he was seriously charmed and we were screaming at him cause he was an idiot and meanwhile or evil mastermind Dm was barely holding it in behind his screen. We eventually got the dragon to flee after taking too much damage and beat the crap out of the cleric / player himself.. but it had to be one of the funniest sessions we've ever had.. because everytime the player looked at our dm he'd just smile at him and shrug, which made him SURE that this dragon wanted to be his friend.. we were just glad that it wasn't a finger of death that decided to actually work at the table hrothgar the dwarf |
| Jerreth02-26-04, 07:01 PM | I also have a memorable dragon story mine is about a brass dragon whom i thought wasn't at home so i stated to loot his treasure stash. Really bad idea. Luckialy, I taunted him by saying that he couldn't hurt me without his foul breath or his magic. Ha! He used his tale and crushed the life out of my guy, luckialy, my diety brought me back to defeat the dragon. so i got better armor and a much better weapon, i had a simple battle axe, and I again got creamed by his stupid tail. My diety got so :censored::censored::censored::censored: :censored::censored: at me that he cast my soal into oblivion. :smirk: |
| Ogre4Hire02-29-04, 09:24 PM | Here's my "Funniest Dragon Story": I was playing a halfling fighter-thief (this was 2E), and the party was in the 10-12 level area. We were all walking through a forest when suddenly a Green Dragon flew overhead and attacked. Rather than landing and allowing us to get in and beat the taco stuffing out of him, he desided that he was simply going to strafe us repeatedly (the DM later told us that he was trying to drive us to a specific area in the forest, which we ended up going to anyway). After several rounds of this, we were starting to get seriously hurt. The cleric was running out of healing, and while we'd injured the dragon, it was no where close to being an even trade-off. So, the wizard (who was a scroll pack-rat) was busy digging through his list of scrolls (he had a bunch of 3 by 5 cards that he'd written each one down on to make it seem more realistic), looking for a Teleport or something. Well, he didn't find Teleport. What he did find, however, was Wall of Force. This guy was very creative when it came to using spells, so he decided to try something. He waited until the dragon was beginning its next strafing run, then, right before it got into breath range, cast Wall of Force right in front of it. Picture, if you will, a three ton flying reptile doing a George of the Jungle impression. SPLAT! The look on the DM's face was priceless. Fortunately, the DM was a pretty cool guy and let him get away with it. |
| Sacred Mesa03-01-04, 10:35 PM | my most memorable Dragon Tale was when i died fighting a Black Dragon Great Wyrm. There was a Sanctum where the soul of a elemental god was in slumber, some wizards wanted this soul to create a powerfull artifact. When the soul got slumbered a guard was set. the Great Wyrm black Dragon. This Sanctum was in the bottom of a swamp. i was playing a Ranger follower of Elohna and one friend was playing a HalfCelestial Cleric of Pelor. We were kinda high level, about 18 both of us, the thing was that we cannot defeat the Guard so i distracted the Dragon for the Cleric to take the Soul Orb out of the sanctum, away from the incoming wizards. i died but it was a really Epic battle. i enjoy it very much, and the day was saved. |
