| Onanic03-18-04, 03:12 PM | My favorite dragon is the blue dragon. believe that they portray a kind of brutal strength and refinement that you look for in an ancient creature. What kind of dragon does everyone else like? I want you to tell on this thread. |
| Tovam03-18-04, 03:49 PM | Copper dragons Why? Because we have the same personality :D |
| jagggar03-18-04, 04:02 PM | Red. It's your classic fire-breather. It's pretty much the dragon of European legend. Big, mean, evil, breaths fire, likes the taste of young maidens. Hot, sexy. . . Oops, those are reasons for the mature boards. Metallic, I like Bronze. Don't totally know why. They've got the classic wings, mate for life, don't seem to think themselves overly superior. Dunno other than that. |
| strenoth03-18-04, 06:47 PM | I've always liked shadow dragons... |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht03-18-04, 08:10 PM | Mercury Dragons. They have a laser for a breath weapon. |
| obrysii03-18-04, 10:23 PM | Bronze dragons for their aditude. Golds for their power and their 'I fight for good!' additude. |
| howlingwolf03-19-04, 04:46 AM | For sheer power and traditional styling, gotta be Red. Visually and for terms of being able to use them, gotta be the Gem dragons. Making them see-through is a good way to scare players, especially when they pose as a statue in a old ruin. |
| SnowbearK03-19-04, 06:26 AM | Faerie Dragons. :D |
| Hiei the Assassin03-19-04, 08:15 AM | Vampiric Black, end of story... |
| Ceran03-19-04, 09:50 AM | Originally posted by SnowbearK Faerie Dragons. :D :D I love those! *g* Copper dragons too. Of the chromatic...well, I love 'em all (; Haven't read in the MMII for months so I wont comment on the gem dragons, haven't tried them in a game either. |
| Dawnspeaker03-19-04, 10:10 AM | Go with the good ol' Bronze. Kinda closest you can get to draconic crusaders of good. |
| DMsDelight03-19-04, 10:56 AM | This is a real tough question, particularly because the only thing I have to go off of is the Monster Manual. But Blue is definitely my favorite, for said reasons of the poster of this message. However, copper dragons share my personality, and Vampiric black sounds coll too. It's a real tough decision. |
| cacuin03-19-04, 01:05 PM | choromatic blue. Clever, powerful, orderly. THey plan for centuries just to blast one stone. Metallic-sliver. You never know who will be a sliver dragon. Feruan-Fang. I had one rip a party apart since he cast a anti magic arua on himself. PLanar-the lava one i cant remeber the real name. WIth fire and sound breath attack or distengrate breath weapon. It rocks as a tanker. Over all I love the blue best of all. When i dm I have a blue bobble head dragon that i ask if the party is going to die. They don't like it when i do that though. |
| TerrickTerran03-19-04, 07:34 PM | My favorite type of dragon is Copper. I love their attitude. My favorite chromatic is Blue. Their attitudes are pretty much the opposite of Copper. They make great adversaries. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht03-20-04, 12:39 PM | I also liked the Gem Dragons. The old ones, not the seriously messed up new ones. |
| gradea03-20-04, 06:46 PM | a vampiric dragon...its ego would be astrinomical...think about it...vampires are arrogent, dragons are arrogent...togeather thier really arrogent... ahem, anyways... the white dragons...thier dumb, but strangly cute...theyd make a great pet ^.^ |
| Moradin03-20-04, 08:29 PM | Well, Bronze dragons would have to be my favorite. I like their look the best, and their sense of duty. Though their anti-anarchist views clash with my partialness to chaotic characters. I also like how they only kill to eat... I dont know why, exactly. |
| GishFarm03-20-04, 10:15 PM | Komodo Dragons rule. Immune to the poison that lingers in their mouths becasue of all the rotten meat they eat. Don't bother keeping any treasure... why would you care about treasure when you can just TAKE anything you want! And a Komodo can easily beat any of your other favorite dragons... |
| MrFahrenheit03-20-04, 10:40 PM | Metallic? Bronze. Surprised so many people like them here. Chromatic? Hm that's a tough one. I don't like blue or red - too overused, I don't like green - too stereotypical of the dragon "look." I guess for now whites because the current campaign I'm making revolves around a great wyrm white dragon as the ruler of an evil nation of frost giants and other creatures. Gem? Sapphire. Gotta love em. So obsessed with war, strategy and tactics, they'd make the best military advisors. In general? My favorite dragon PERIOD has got to be the pyroclastic. MAN do they rock! |
| Asta Kask03-22-04, 04:33 AM | Apple dragon. Wise, tasty and full of vitamins. |
| dmdarkdragon03-22-04, 02:42 PM | Mist dragons!!! Who doesn't like a dragon that likes sitting quietly and thinking for most of his life? And don't forget that scalding steam breath they use when some dumb lesser race decides to barge in on their meditations... Mist dragons are (at least in my opinion) the most likely to train themselves as wizards instead of relying on their inborn sorcerous talent, due to their seclusive nature and love of knowledge. Also, you can't beat their awesome appearance: aqua/blue with silvery specks, long tendrils on their snout (near the nostrils) that extend down like a "fu man chu" moustache, and the two large ivory horns... gaahhhhhhhh I LOVE MIST DRAGONS! |
| moosekickedmysisterstoof03-22-04, 03:19 PM | Either black or green. Both are wonderfully evil, though not to a stupid degree. There's just somethin' about breathin' acid and chlorine gas that I love! |
| Onanic03-22-04, 10:20 PM | Hey where is the mist dragon again? |
| NightScreamer2003-22-04, 10:29 PM | The Great Wyrm Purple Dragon! Yup...a Half-Blue Half-Red Dragon with a Firebolt Breath weapon and immunity to electricity and fire! Rock on you purple monster! Oh of the one I haven't templated myself...um...Fang Dragon Damn viscious! |
| DaTedinator03-24-04, 09:40 AM | Actually, Nightscreamer, there was a purple dragon in Dragon magazine issue a long time ago. It lived underground and had a breath weapon of a brilliant energy beam. That thing was AWESOME. |
| Gwydain03-24-04, 11:28 AM | I like blue dragons, except with the white dragon's breath weapon. Nothing like getting frozen to death, when expecting to get struck by lightning.:D |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast03-24-04, 03:14 PM | MY favourites: Chromatic: Tricky....hmm....I'm thinking blue. I like their individual look and general personality. Metallic: Silver. IMO they are one of the best looking dragons in any book I have ever read. I just adore Lockwood's silver dragon! Not only that, but they are the most friendly and easy to fit into any campaign (thanks to their love of humanoids). Gem: Crystal. They probably have the coolest breathweapon of any dragon. Cone of light...nice. |
| DaTedinator03-24-04, 06:14 PM | I think my favorite Chromatic would have to be black. I just like the look of the horns and the snarling and the acid... Metallic-wise: Either copper or silver. Silvers are awesome. Plain and simple. But the thing is, Coppers are so fun. I dunno. I don't have MMII, so I dunno about Gems... |
| obrysii03-24-04, 08:11 PM | I like the Emerald Dragon as well. |
| Silvirs03-24-04, 09:39 PM | I would definatly have to say silver on this one. the whole wind-deal is my sort of thing. and i luv the idea of cloudwalking! just hangin out, ya know? :cloud9: |
| gradea03-24-04, 10:14 PM | i changed my mind, my favorit is the custom Opal Dragon i just made! (i hope that name isnt taken already). |
| Serene Selene03-25-04, 08:16 AM | Metallic - Silver. Chromatic - Black. Gem - Amythest. Maybe partially because I love the gemstone itself. |
| Sonshu03-25-04, 09:26 AM | Black: Evil, Cunning and thoroughly ruthless. What a beast! |
| bootor03-25-04, 09:44 AM | My favorite dragon to throw at unsuspecting PC's - Great Wyrm Rust Dragon. |
| green_yawgmoth03-25-04, 07:18 PM | Prismatic. So shiny, and sparkly, and... pretty...... @_@;; |
| Bergen03-25-04, 07:33 PM | I too like the Blue's the best. I like the fact that they are creatures of the desert. Can work within a system of rule and don't take any gruff from anything below them. and the new art looks fab. |
| claytonian03-26-04, 01:29 AM | I'm fond of the ectoplasmic dragons |
| Hiei the Assassin03-26-04, 08:07 AM | C'mon guys what do you have against dragons with egos the size of a large planet???? |
| samoosa69103-26-04, 05:41 PM | RED DRAGONS!!!!!!!!, so beastly.... |
| BalancedOne03-26-04, 06:26 PM | Metallic- Silver, just Coool... Cromatic- tie between Blue(fav color) and Black (i make them Necromancers) Gem- Saphire- I alwaised liked Agile Dragons Planer- Styxian (Think it just looks cool) |
| Xas03-26-04, 06:58 PM | Shadow dragons rule...Chaos ones are not that bad though... |
| Kurama Youko03-27-04, 11:49 PM | Definitely, has to be the Kaiser Dragon.. |
| KaFKaSiC03-28-04, 01:54 AM | Chromatic: blue (and here i thought i was the only one that liked them) regal, cunning, honorable, whats not to like? :schemes: Metallic: Brass. nevermind the fact that theyre just miniature gold dragons, theyre just great to have around. which is why my epic wizard has a couple in his fron yard as pets  Gem: Saphire. theyre such great strategical thinkers, the perfect military leader FR: Fang dragon, they look like someone slapped an industrial-sized cheese grater on a dragon :cloud9: |
| DM Zoc03-28-04, 02:42 AM | Radiant, because they're so shiny! Of the core dragons, I prefer the White. It has a low enough ECL that I might play one at some point and it has four independent non-magical modes of travel. |
| Trydan03-31-04, 11:39 AM | My favourites: Chromatic: Red - the classic "european" dragon... a very tough choice though. Metallic: Bronze - an easy choice here. However, let me also contribute a brief summary of the results so far. I've ranked them according to the number of posts claiming to like them (that's the number out the front). Several types got the same number of "votes", so they are printed on a single line for brevity. 9 x Blue 6 x Bronze, Silver 5 x Copper, Black 4 x Red 3 x White, Sapphire, Fang 2 x Vampiric Black, Shadow, Purple, Gem, Faerie, Amethyst 1 x .... (too many to mention) |
| Pystian04-01-04, 03:58 AM | Of the 10 core dragons, definitely Bronze. If all Dragons are fair game, I may have to go for the Chaos Dragon. |
| DaTedinator04-01-04, 09:15 AM | Ok, changed my mind, Steel is the best. |
| Myst_the_Moonscout04-03-04, 09:18 PM | Brass |
| wdarkk04-04-04, 03:22 AM | Kendragon. |
| priest of blipdoolpoolp04-04-04, 04:31 AM | Green all the way- evil and fond of torture... Lorac be warned! |
| The Red Scorpion04-04-04, 10:18 AM | Chromatic: White - i like icy creatures Metallic: Bronze - they are just cool Other: my half-white half-silver dragon :D |
| Mithral Icesilver04-04-04, 02:13 PM | Faerie Dragon: 8 HD, CG, breath weapon, flies like an air elemental, glittering scales of many colors, many spell-like abilities, and a penchant for apple pie!:D |
| Blaze_the_Dragon04-04-04, 06:56 PM | Two options here....I can go with Red, Large, powerfull creatures, take themselves as the TRUE dragon, the rest are just inferior copy cats (sounds kinda-beholderish to me :S), also the typical Fire breathing, town crushing, princess stealing, hero eating, monster, If I want my PC's to tremble in fear all I do is give them an advanced red dragon, living IN a volcano, with a hoard that would make the local king look like a begger. Then of course there is the close offspring, the Hellfire wyrm, Detailed in teh MM2, One of the BESt dragons I've seen, Demonic in the sceaming way, but also not under crushing a foolish adventurer with his tail, the only reason it doesn't win straight out...No growth stats, only one for god knows what age.... |
| Althalus04-05-04, 09:12 AM | Radiants are the best. They are a mix of many dragons. They are trully rare in all aspects, and are HUGE! ________________________________________ ___________ "What do you mean my head was severed!? I have 223 hit points and an AC of 35! How can my head get chopped off in 1 hit?!" |
| General Contactus04-05-04, 11:15 AM | Chromatic: Blue. Gotta love the evil overlord! Mettalic: Silver. Cloudwalking is cool! FR: fang dragon. Other: my own creation: the Ambigus(sp) dragon (true neutral, no elemental type) :D |
| leopardmessiah04-05-04, 01:36 PM | Do Athasian Dragons count? |
| Dackad04-12-04, 01:53 PM | Chromatic: Blue Metallic: Silver Planar: Tarterian Other: Shadow |
| ToiletGecko04-12-04, 02:35 PM | Chromatic: Black Metallic: Mercury Gem: Crystal Other: Chaos Dragons (which are my favourite of these 4. Mmm, chaos dragons...) |
| Crimson Hellkite04-14-04, 02:36 AM | Chromatic? Green. Breathing acid just kicks ass. Metallic? Silver. I just like silver. Gem? Sapphire, just because I like half-sapphire dragons. They get shoot sonic, which no creature is resistant to, and they are immune to electricity. Overall? Prismatic. They're the most powerful non-god creatures in the universe. |
| Radagast04-14-04, 01:07 PM | Chromatic - Gotta be Greens. Graceful, yet powerful, with a nice mix of Lawful discretion and wisdom, along with Evil cruelity, and rage. Plus, they live in forests, a rather common type of environment, and they breath underwater, which can come in VERY handy if used properly against the PC's. They make excellent opponents that can be both subtle and terribly direct! Metallic - Silver, for the breath weapon and dignity, though Bronze's match my personality the most. Gotta love the rogue crusader for good! |
| Nived04-14-04, 01:24 PM | Metallics: Copper, I enjoy their personalities. When I'm running a game and I need a good dragon to interact with the PCs I have to go with Copper (occationally Brass) simpley because they are fun for me as a DM to run. What can I say I like messing with my PCs heads. Cromatics: Black, a well run Black Dragon in its home enviorment should NEVER be spotted by PCs before it chooses to strike. The fact that both these dragons use acidic breath weapons have nothing to do with it... ok maybe a little. |
| Arnkel04-18-04, 11:58 PM | Chromatic: White, those guys are so nifty. It's a shame they are always portrayed as stupid beasts. A White dragon worth its name should easily take out any character dumb enough to actually attack it if played right. Metallic: Brass, if the breathweapon doesn't get ya, the blasted things will talk you to death. Gem: Topaz, The smallest of the True Dragons. Other: Shadow. the old second edition gliders. so evil, so insidious, so damned kick ass if you give them shadow walk. |
| Ramses III05-08-04, 06:41 AM | Bronze. I loved the Dragonriders of Pern series and have used a Bronze named Mnementh as a major NPC in a couple of campaigns. As a nemesis, Greens. They are scheming and nasty and have cool mind-affecting innate abilities. For the art in the books, the Fang Dragon. OMG i would NOT mess with that thing!!!!!!! |
| Moonstonedragon05-14-04, 05:45 PM | Mine are Bronze and crystal! I just like the was bronze dragons are, while I really enjoyed rping a crystal dragon in council of wyrms. |
| Alchahest05-15-04, 01:11 AM | Copper, simply because they tease Reds. |
| Zombie Vegetarian05-15-04, 02:28 AM | Shadow Dragon. Sure, any Dragon can pound you, but can they destroy eight of your levels before doing so? |
| Lankin the Mad Mage05-15-04, 03:45 AM | I have many favorites: Red, because it has THE best look (IMHO)in the whole MM. GO Lockwood! And the whole attitude and mentality of the thing is so...so....captivating. I also LOVE the shadow dragon. I tend to like anything related to the plane of shadow, but this time it's justified. "The dragon breathes on you. Fortitude save" "I made it!" "Then you only loose 8 levels" Once again, Lockwood has made an exceptional picture. As for the rest, it's a close tie between prismatic, rust and pyroclastic. Why, oh WHY did they make such sucky artwork for both the pyroclastic and rust dragons? Why couldn't they have used the wonderful original ART from dragon magazine? Now they simply look like half-melted lego figures! Since I don't own the Psionics Handbook, I don't like the Gem dragons. I can't use them without incorporating a whole new magic system? Bah! |
| Azual05-15-04, 05:56 PM | BRASS quote from monster manuel pg. 79 Brass dragons would rather talk than fight. If an intelligent creautre tries to leave without engaging in conversation, the dragon may force compliance in a fit of pique, using suggestion or a dose of sleep gas. a creature put to sleep may wake to find itself pinned or buried to the neck in sand until the dragon's thirst for small talk is slaked. :D :D :D |
| Azual05-15-04, 05:58 PM | Originally posted by GishFarm Komodo Dragons rule. Immune to the poison that lingers in their mouths becasue of all the rotten meat they eat. Don't bother keeping any treasure... why would you care about treasure when you can just TAKE anything you want! And a Komodo can easily beat any of your other favorite dragons... dude i want one of those as a pet man THOSE THINGS ARE SOOOOOOOOOO COOL! |
| Flame_Drake05-15-04, 10:50 PM | Brass and Copper. Neither really care who's around them, as long as they can talk. They also do their best to drive any evil dragons around them nuts. |
| Shadow Weaver05-16-04, 12:44 AM | Metallic: Silver Chromatic: Not sur eon this one, reds always gave my parties the worst poundings FR: Shadow and Fang - from a character standpoint, the abilities of these two frighten me to no end (I play a wizard). |
| DwelleroftheDeep05-16-04, 11:49 AM | Blue, I really like the picture on page 5 of the Draconimicon, it just looks like such an awesome creature, I also like black dragons, though they are a little ugly IMO. PS. the white dragon wyrmling on page 272 of the Draconimicon is adorable:P |
| april15197805-16-04, 10:33 PM | Well, lets see... Metalics, well, while I like the golds, I like the look of the silver dragons better... Matter of fact, all the metalics look better than the gold to me... I guess they look like a half dragon, half bottom feeding fish too me... That, or maybe it's the slightly oriental look that is not as pleasing at the rest... Chromatics, I have to go with the black... Prue look of evil and malice... Reds are a close second, and just behind that is the blues; got to love the horn... As for green, they look like a silver dragon that didn't develop properly, and the whites are just not right, though I not the reason why... I've had a DM that I played under suggest that all the dragons in his world were of any of the physical looks, and the only real way to identify them was by eye color... He made most all colored to thier surroundings... Just a thought to toss out there... |
| PsionicRanger05-20-04, 11:31 AM | I ran a game where dragons had lost their intelligence and put a party against a feral Gold Dragon with a rend attack...that dominated:smirk: |
| FumaNoOni05-20-04, 02:28 PM | My Favorite dragon would be any dragon that chooses to be a Dracolich!!! As if it wasn't hard to kill a normal dragon now you have to find it's Phylactery and smash it too. |
| Timespike05-20-04, 11:33 PM | Metallic: Silver. They care the most about mortals, they live among them, they're AWE-INSPIRINGLY POWERFUL, they look cool, they smell like rain, and they can freeze things solid with their breath weapon. I love their attitudes, their appearance, everything. Just. Plain. Awesome. Chromatic: Black. Creepy-looking, and just DRIPPING with evil. they're so evil, Asmodeus himself gets creeped out by them. They're the kind of evil that makes other evil things go "dude, that just ain't right." The acidic breath weapon and amphibious nature also make for scary-versatile enemies, and they team up well with necromantic baddies, evil druids, and the like. One of the few dragons where you might not be able to tell immediately if it's alive or a dracolich. Planar (Good-aligned): Radiant. It's a paladin dragon! The kind of thing you can perch a solar on the back of and send swooping out of nowhere as an answer to a Miracle or something. I love awe-inspiring celestial things Planar (Evil-Aligned): Rust Dragon. Want something that will truly scare your players? Sic one of these bad boys on 'em! Almost as bad as a shadow dragon... Honorable Mention: Oceanus Dragon. They remind me of Cyrus the sea serpent from "Cyrus the Unsinkable Sea Serpent"; one of my favorite book from when I was a kid. |
| darrius05-22-04, 08:57 AM | silver all the way. i mean how couldn't you like wind/cloudwalking and freezing enemies in place. plus they look pretty cool. |
| Azual05-22-04, 11:53 AM | Originally posted by Timespike Chromatic: Black. Creepy-looking, and just DRIPPING with evil. they're so evil, Asmodeus himself gets creeped out by them. One of the few dragons where you might not be able to tell immediately if it's alive or a dracolich. hey dude... necromancy is not evil, i doubt ant necromancer would ever team up with a black. more like a mist or dracolich |
| De Batavier05-22-04, 02:02 PM | Pseudo-dragon with a wizard familiar. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht05-22-04, 03:29 PM | Originally posted by ToiletGecko Metallic: Mercury Mercury Dragons aren't Metallic Dragons. They only have one breath weapon. I've changed my mind on my favorite dragon. My favorite dragon is... TROGDOR! |

LOL, definitly is Silver;), he combines best looking and coolest special abilities:) Radiant comes close, but he's just too unreal. (the way I see him he's too close to celestial to be a dragon) Silver Dragon |
| Forgotten one05-23-04, 01:40 PM | pink dragon (half red/half white) my pcs laughed at one....then they got frozen to icecubes then melted into water:smirk: |
| The Master Weaver Is Warped05-23-04, 09:55 PM | metalic: brass, I love to talk! chromatic: gotta say red, they always have :pile:s of treasure gem: saphire, I have asked my dm if we could go up against a large army battle and he said, "I can make that happen :smirk: " |
| zamiel05-26-04, 11:45 AM | I agree with The Master Weaver Is Warped on the Brass. Although George and Gracie the Gold dragon couple from this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=117646) thread are amazing. For an evil dragon, I'd have to go with the Blue. The funy thing is I always seem to set my campaigns in regions without deserts, so I never get to use them. |

| zamiel05-26-04, 06:04 PM | Sorry, I missed the post title the first read through. As for your favourite, how about any dragon that flies away in the middle of a fight? I know Fade likes those. Not. |
| Guardsmen05-26-04, 07:06 PM | chromatic: green dragon acid is good metalic: Bronze dragons their so cool epic: force dragons man at wrymling their HUGE size :mymy: :mymy: :mymy: :mymy: gem: saphire |

| Rotipher05-26-04, 08:23 PM | For Good dragons, it depends what I'm using them for. As a deus ex machina to save PCs' bacon or as a battle-ally, I generally go with bronzes, as they're highly effective, can turn up anywhere there's a coastline, river or big lake, and getting to work with one doesn't go to the players' heads to the same extent as a silver or gold. As a source of information or a test of PCs' mettle, copper's usually the most fun, as it gives me an excuse to be a pain in the butt. ;-) If a silver or gold DOES get involved, that's a cue to my players that the situation should be taken *very* seriously; if I need a metallic dragon to be in need of assistance, OTOH, I go with brass, as they're weaker and so don't detract from dragons' image of overall power as much, when they ask for help. As for *Evil* dragons, unless I'm sticking closely to archetypes of dragons' destruction and greed -- in which case, reds rule! -- I've personally got a soft spot for the greens. Not the biggest or the creepiest, but they've got the malice and spite to do something other evil dragons seldom bother with: they make it PERSONAL. When a black/blue/red/white dragon wreaks routine, generalized havoc, PCs might shout: "You monster!" (duh) ... but when green dragons deliberately manipulate the PCs so they'll engineer their own destruction, and/or bring the dragon's own evil schemes into fruition, the *players* shout: "You BA$TARD!!!". >:-) |
| Amaron Blackthorn05-27-04, 03:03 PM | For the chromatic dragons, got to go with the greens Metallic the bronze Gem the Crystals |
