| kallisti2301-21-05, 04:42 AM | Hello everybody! I'm just curious to see what monsters everyone likes so I'm taking a little poll. I'll start by casting my vote for the Rapture Locust from the Fiend Folio. I liked them so much that I set a campaign in the desert just so I could use them. |
| HomebrewedMonster01-21-05, 04:49 AM | The Red Dragon, just because he is the ultimate villian, and he is the original evil dragon. |
| Vici01-21-05, 05:41 AM | Favorite monters as player and DM... Goblinoid - Nothing is more fun than chopping your way throught hundreds of orc, goblins or kobolds... Rakshasa - The very embodiment of evil... you gotta love this fella Level 15+ Lich - Well... You can run, but you usually can't hide (my party hates this one) :D |
| Khalarak Ironclaw01-21-05, 09:22 AM | From a player's perspective, I favor mindless undead and fiends. You (usually) feel no remorse for gutting a hundred or so of them, and killing them is (almost) always a good thing. On the other hand, no monster gives a DM a role-playing and combat powerhouse like a dragon. No matter what age category, no matter what type, an encounter with a dragon will always be remembered. |
| Fredrik Svanberg01-21-05, 09:28 AM | Otyugh, because their name is funny, they have tentacles and they look cool, like a poor man's Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath. "Otyugh" sounds almost like "otyg" which is swedish for, approximately, "nuisance". |
| Voldenuit01-21-05, 09:58 AM | As villains, Arcanoloths. Always scheming, plotting and manipulating, yet so much more accessible and "human" than the faceless Ultroloths. As alien, horror-inducing monsters, Illithids. Dealing with the 'thids is always unnerving, expecially when they're speaking through the vocal cords of a dominated/thralled creature, or worse, directly into your mind. As monolithic menacing exterminators, Ethergaunts. A race of hyperintelligent genocidal maniacs hellbent on the "cleansing" of all inferior races from the face of the multiverse. For good ol' fun, Flumphs. These lovable floating jellyfish were converted to 3e in Dungeon #118. Almost as cute as the Blobbies from old Japanese CRPGs (if only we could do something about that smell...). |
| Lionhearted01-21-05, 10:01 AM | Otyugh, because their name is funny, they have tentacles and they look cool, like a poor man's Dark Young of Shub-Niggurath. "Otyugh" sounds almost like "otyg" which is swedish for, approximately, "nuisance". oh very funny almost as funny as let's go out and clean som ogres ( ogräs in swedish= weeds (not the kind you smoke)) or said to the guy with fish head "your SCUM!" HA HA HA :shifty:  |
| bookwurm01-21-05, 10:25 AM | I can't remember its name, but its in the Epic Level Handbook. It looks like a tree, but is a huge creature with 100 arms, all with greatswords. They supposedly only bring it out to exterminate pantheons. I mean, theres always something to be said of the I'm-so-powerful-i-could-wipe-the-floor-with-a-god dude:D |
| Masker01-21-05, 10:55 AM | I can't remember its name, but its in the Epic Level Handbook. It looks like a tree, but is a huge creature with 100 arms, all with greatswords. They supposedly only bring it out to exterminate pantheons. I mean, theres always something to be said of the I'm-so-powerful-i-could-wipe-the-floor-with-a-god dude They're called hecatonchireis (more or less)And they are cool! I favor fiends (any) because you don't have moral issues in killing one I like undead because my pc's (I'm the DM) hate them and their draining/sickening/I-will-make-you-lose-your-level INCORPOREAL touch attacks.:evillaugh I like almost anything advanced (I rarely use a monster without messing a bit with the stats first):plotting: and maybe some templates and/or class levels (ever tried advanced elite jovocs with barbarian levels? :evillaugh) |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht01-21-05, 11:17 AM | Xanxost. Not blue slaad in general, just Xanxost. |
| Amethyst01-21-05, 11:32 AM | As a player, I really enjoy Goblinoids of any sort. They make a nice splat sound under your feet. As a DM, I enjoy throwing Undead at the players. I can come up with endless ways to put most any undead into any campaign. (Of course, that usually is very simple, just put a Necromancer. But, I'm not always THAT cliche.) ~Amethyst |
| Yu01-21-05, 04:46 PM | I'm a big fan of ropers, personally, as there's just something incredibly funny and cool about an intelligent, one-eyed evil stalagmite with a taste for meat. |
| Bonzai01-21-05, 06:05 PM | I am with some of the others here, nothing beats an ancient Red Dragon. They are the icons of DnD, and your players certainly have a feeling of coming of age when you beat one for the first time. |
| Tevish Szat01-21-05, 06:20 PM | Illithid. Beholder. Red Dragon. Baernaloth (not as combat enemies, jsut the concept!) |
| Obscure One01-21-05, 06:20 PM | Drow and Driders are my favorite villains. Dark elves are pretty cool, and dark elves failing Lolth's test bringing upon themselves a horrid curse causing them mutate into hideous spider-like creatures are even cooler. As if the Drow aren't creepy enough, the whole cursed spider thing just tops the creep 'o' meter. :gah: |
| turalisj01-21-05, 06:46 PM | my favs as a dm: dopplegangers- these guys can look like any creature. my favorite tactic is to capture on of the players and have the doppleganger inpersonate him/her until the boss battle. any giant- i save these for pre-boss battles. just a few half giants and a single hill giant can really mess up a strategy. my favs as a player: bronze/gold dragons- they can shapeshift and that gives me a lot of help. especially if you are doing a stealth mission. elves- i just love 'em. they come in every flavor you can think of and they taste.... erm never mind, i was thinking about jellybeans.... poisondusk lizardfolk- with poison usage and martial proficiency with bolas and nets, you can deal some powerfull damage to your enemies. well, tats my list. :D the monsters aren't very pwerfull individually, 'cept for the giants, but they can be deadly in the kind of scenerio's i play. |
| green_yawgmoth01-21-05, 07:17 PM | Paragon Prismatic dragon Demilich. :evillaugh http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v91/yawgmoth/kittyjig.gif |
| Dackad01-21-05, 08:14 PM | Fiends of any stripe. Slaad. Undead of pretty much any type. Big, nasty dragons. Illithids. |
| bookwurm01-25-05, 10:24 AM | well actually i have to say my favorite is one of my own creation: The cybertaur, a 4th lvl fighter, magiclly echanced, cyborg minitour CR: 14 had a gun grafted on one arm and a greatsword on the other permanant spells:enlarge, bulls str, endurance, cybernetics: boosted str and con, DR, fire resist, elec resist had like a 50 something str got killed by 2 crits from a baster rifle (from the worst rolling character no less!) :weep: :weep: :weep: shoulda made him undead too |
| Olly01-26-05, 12:42 PM | I'm not a massive fan of aberrations, but I've always had a strange fondness for chokers and nothics. I've always thought them to be slightly creepy and very weird looking, and so, I leap at the chance to use them wherever possible in my campaign. Also, I'd love an ethereal marauder as a guard dog, just because the picture in the Monster Manual looks so cool. |
| T.rex01-26-05, 04:04 PM | got to go with the lich her, bob. there is something about the fact that it can keep coming back that makes it the ultimate boss villain. |
| Llathos01-26-05, 04:23 PM | I kinda like the Aurumvorax, believe it or not. It's like a wolverine with more legs, large, and a coat/hide made of GOLD. It grapples does great dmg, and is fun to throw at a party for an ambush. I also like the Behir and the shocking lizard. The shocking lizards are so pitiful looking, but in numbers the threat grows dramatically due to their group-shock abilities. Polar worms are also a favorite. I rarely use dragons b/c I personally think they're scarier as a threat than as a real encounter. I like to keep something in my campaign world that's too dreadful to imagine. Battling a dragon should be on that list. Once you BEAT a dragon, it kinda makes everything else look easy. |
| Norade01-26-05, 11:28 PM | Slaads, Balors, Illithids, and Hezrous |
| Dnd man01-28-05, 09:15 PM | my favorite monsters r any undead.i just like killing them even thou i hate that 1/4 piercing dam. :banghead: cause i like usein my crossbow all the time. But my fav undead are skeletons i love just haveing like a club a bashing in their heads :evillaugh :evillaugh :plotting: :evillaugh :evillaugh :heehee urs truly...Dnd man |
| Elven Doritos01-28-05, 11:18 PM | Those chaotic neutral buddies of mine, the slaadi, get very little love. I've only seen one mention of the Limbo-loving guys! And in all the content I've read and the D&D related video games I've played, the only slaadi stuff is the planar books (since they're planar creatures-- fair enough, i suppose) and Demonstone for the PS2 and X-Box (which I consider to be an awesome depiction of the CN baddies). On the note, anybody else notice how much the slaadi changed from 3rd to 3.5? |
| TemporalEnergon01-29-05, 09:45 PM | OK, this could take a while: GIbbering mouther, Ettin, Gnoll, Obscure True dragons (i.e. Force, Mist, Mercury etc), Caller in Darkness, Pseudonaturals, Summoning oozes, Sahuagin, Avariels and Grey elves (no other elves! ), Demons. Yugoloths (especially Nycaloths :D ), Koblods (squishy... ;) ), That walking mountain on the boards  , Vampire Spawn, Slaad, Grells (really!), Deep Spawn, Beholder Kin, Behirs, Squamous spewer, Archfiends  :schemes: :coolcthul :plotting: :evillaugh , Several Demon Princes, the EEEs, Planar dragons..... to be continued. |
| obrysii01-29-05, 10:44 PM | definitly the True Dragons. |
| red zero02-19-05, 07:05 PM | were-wolf becuase its so awesome and can turn you if bitten :D |
| Gemstone02-19-05, 08:20 PM | oh very funny almost as funny as let's go out and clean som ogres ( ogräs in swedish= weeds (not the kind you smoke)) or said to the guy with fish head "your SCUM!" HA HA HA :shifty:  WHo can forget: "OJ! Han ser skum ut" - a player of mine to the pciture on Skum in the MM... |
| x-Wraith-x02-19-05, 11:05 PM | Death giants, vampires, beholders, yugoloths, anything I made....in that order...oh, and goblins. Trolls and most other giants are cool too. Slaads are also great. |
| DragonHead02-20-05, 02:17 AM | The Red Dragon is tough but Beholders have always been my favorate. |
| Orvar02-20-05, 05:44 AM | Anything big and strong, mainly Giants and Monstrous Humanoids, meaning Ogres and Minotaurs... EDIT: Oh my god, I love the Kuo-Toas. They're so cute! And the name of their goddess ain't bad, either. Blipdoolpoolp. |
| Meisterbrau02-20-05, 11:42 AM | From a player perspective I dont really know....its been so long sence I have actually played I barely remember what its like :( . As a gm tho I like em all. It just depends what I need to throw at my party. If I need undead I have the Libris Mortis (great book), if I just want lotsa hp/dmg giants ftw. Im a big fan of adding templates, classes, and advancements to my encounter mobs (legendary monster ftw!). Basically I try and have things be new and unique each encounter so the pcs are allways guessing. And every once in awhile I throw an opposing group against them, and honestly, thats when things get really dangerous. Tonight there going up against a party of bounty hunters (they have ****** off some REALLY powerfull people) that is between CR 20 and 25 (the party is between 21-22 with 5 lvl 17 cohorts). I expect it to be fun and possibly have a few pc deaths if there not careful. (mind you I dont activly try to kill my pcs but I do like to challenge them). |
| Aricandor02-20-05, 11:43 AM | Hmm... Let's see. Iron golems - Breathing poison gas and chomping through fighters and wizards alike. Me like! Mind flayers - The quintessential bad guy at one point or another. Dragons - Who can resist them? Certainly not the players  Elemental Grues - The pictures of them are soooo cool! :D I think I'll subject my players to a maddened wizard's laboratory full of them... Elemental Monoliths - Nothing like stomping down your enemies with a CR 17 gargantuan fire elemental. Once again, me like! Drow - There's always room for drow. Like the mind flayers, a quintessential villain. Especially together WITH a mind flayer. |
| Gilean02-21-05, 12:36 PM | :dragon: |
| Tolby02-21-05, 01:29 PM | I favor anything undead. Followed by Elementals. Mainly because they make great mindless slaves to the evil baddie behind them. |
| thugmeister02-21-05, 01:48 PM | Be it a Mind Leech, Soul Tick, or a Psionic Sinew, these are the best monsters going. Why? Because you can add them to any other living monster for extra creepy fun. PCs mowing through a goblinoid cave? Have them face a minion afflicted with a Mind Leech and that will slow things right down. If the creature is compatable with the symbiont then both the creature and the symbiont get to act each round. Now you have a hobgoblin dominating or psionic blasting while power attacking with a battle axe  Now that charming young thing at the bar can be chatting you up while her freindly leech detects thoughts. Need to spice up your orcish barbarian? Toss a Psionic Sinew in there, then kick out the enhanced raging claw damage. The possibilities are endless. :D |
| Cadence7302-21-05, 01:56 PM | Easy, Bulette. My first time playing, I was 7 years old, it was after-school day care, and my counseler said, "I have this new game". I was a fighter, and we were in the desert, all of the sudden this shark fin showed up out of the ground, and *spring*, a Bulette was right in front of us. The halfling rogue got swallowed (or trapped in it's back-thingy, I don't remember). Someone told me I'd have a better change getting through it's armor with a dagger than a longsword, so I stopped fighting to put my sword away and grab my dagger. While I was fumbling with my scabbard, it bit me. All the while the rogue was trying to stab his way out. Since that day back in 1981, Bulettes have always been my favorite. It's the one D&D mini I keep at my desk at work. And, it's pronouced boo-LAY! |
| Dark_Tide02-21-05, 07:42 PM | As a DM: Goblins... Dah! Werewolves... great to throw at low level PCs if you want to see them sweat. Ghouls... scary suckers. As a Player: Ogres... They never get old for some reason. Orcs... I really don't know why I like to fight these guys... they have character. Lizardfolk... Creepy and primative, yet cunning. |
| angryman02-22-05, 09:55 AM | I love goblins, too. And kobolds. Any time I get to put on my evil squeaky voice. And I have a soft spot for giants. They're like Dwarves but huge. |
| The ShapeLess One02-22-05, 12:56 PM | I am a fan of the Baneguard, Direguard, Helmed Horror, Battle Horror, Nishruu (Busta spell caster!!!), Tomb Tappers (Forgotten Realms version) Will-o-wisps, and most anything Forgotten Realms. Orcs, Orcs & More ORCS!!!!!!! add 15 Barb and 2 fighter levels to a Orc and watch the players run for there life. =) |
| pc_shadows02-22-05, 01:02 PM | yea its not really a monster but the think i love killing the most is pc... i am the monster (mentaly that is.). hehehe  |
| Charles the druid02-24-05, 08:05 PM | The mind witness, all the fun of a beholder and a mind flayer in one package :coolcthul |
| bookwurm02-25-05, 11:47 AM | You know, in 5 years of gaming I have never encountered a Beholder. Weird huh? Yeah the werewolf is a nasty enemy. had a level 6 group wiped out by 2 werewolves, a mage, and a couple henchmen. Its that DR, almost impossible to get past at low level unless your prepared. |
| Slagger the Chuul02-25-05, 04:15 PM | Let's see: Chuuls are at the top of the list (obviously) with their grabbing/crushing/paralyzing/drowning action, closely follower by beholders as intelligent, supremist, toothy artillery platforms of antimagic and sudden death. Liches are the perfect villain, returning time after devious time. Lizardmen are just cool, and the nothic is a favourite for its ability to rot people by looking at them. |
| Jayr02-25-05, 05:42 PM | I like oceanus dragons, chokers, kobolds, ethereal dragons, faerie dragons, slaymates, dryads, n' darkmantles, in that order. A bit of a bizarre list, but it makes me glad I sprung for the Draconomicon :D |
