I would like to know what everyone's favorite templates are and what book they are in. I would also like a cool example of the template. This will hellp me decide what book to buy next. I need more monsters, because my players know most of what I can throw at them allready, and I would like to know how to change something to make it different.

For an example, I'll start.

The Phrenic template from the Expanded Psionic Handbook is very useful for adding psionic creatures to your game without a player pointing out the mind flayer, githyanki or crysmal in the corner. A phrenic T-Rex is a pretty mean adversary for mid-level adventurers.

Thanks to everyone who responds, because I'm trying to decide between
MM2, MM3, MM4, and the Fiend Folio.

Jeez, let's see. The Half-Illithid template in Fiend Folio is generally good for a laugh. I also have been meaning to use the Spellwarped template in... what was it... MM2? MM3? Anyway. That's all that comes to mind at the moment. I also think I'm on the right track with the half-golem PC template (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=686279) that I've been working on...

I like the templates in general but just to pick a good one from any of the mentioned books, umm I'd say shadow or spellwarped, cant remember which books for those though.

You could probably find the table of contents to the books you mentioned. I'll post links if you want me to, and if I can find them.

Out of all the templates though, I'd have to pick my phoenix creature template, linkage in my Sig if you wanted to look.

EDIT: Well I searched and I couldnt find any of the table of contents except for the MM4.

Insectile template in Savage Species. It makes some great looking multi-weapons fighters.

All Half-Elemental/Elemental template in Manual of the plane(?). Though, I tend to prefer creatures wraped in fire with fiery red skin. But that's just me.

One of the most powerful templates for a villain/monster is the Voidmind template.

For +1 CR, you get immunity to mind effects, immunity to ability damage and ability drain, immunity to level drain (I think), a plethora of stat bonuses, and an extra independent tentacle attack (that has improved grapple) that doesn't hinder you in any way.

Oh, and a nifty cone attack that deals 1d6 per HD and lowers will saves by -2 for a short while.

Heck, it even gives you an excuse to be casting spells or manifesting powers from a non-caster/manifester. The master of the Voidmind creature can use the voidmind as a medium to cast/manifest spells/powers.

Sadly my favorite was already taken - the Half-Illithid. I'm very fond of half-illithid hydras. :)

I also like a simple Lycanthrope sometimes. Dire were-weasel anyone? Or perhaps you prefer a halfling were-viper rogue?

Tauric is always good (savage species). kobold tauric black bear is fairly nasty.
Especially when combined with Feral (also SS). Improved Grab and Rend? O.o; ick. hehe

I've grown rather fond of the Beast of Xvim template, myself.
