What favoured enemy would a ranger need to take to specialise against lycanthropes? Techincally it seems to be the base race, but does that mean that a ranger who has a +6 bonus against human werewolves, has no idea what to do against elven ones?

Humanoid (Shapechanger)

would probably work, or just use Lycanthrope, that would let you apply it to reverse ones as well if they show up in your campaign...

By the rules, the correct Favored Enemy would be Humanoid (shapechanger).

But there are so few of them that, in my games, I'd let a player take (shapechanger) as a Favored Enemy, which would include all lycanthropes (humanoids or giants) as well as a few shape-shifting monsters like the aranea, barghest, mimic, or doppelganger.

And since those bonuses do not stack together, I don't see how this could get overpowered.
