| ieattrollsforbreakfast11-16-03, 01:27 PM | This has probably been done before but what they hey, just wanna know what you people like :D Out of all the true dragons (I think thats Metallic, Chromatic and Gem, but not sure if there are more in 2/1e or Draconomicon), which is your favourite? I think mine would have to be the silver or crystal dragon. Silvers just look really cool, and some of the abilities (like cloudwalking) rock. I like crystals because they have an amazing breath weapon (beam of light type thing) which I think would look really cool. They also look pretty neat too :D So what do you, the people of the boards, think? |
| Xavim11-16-03, 01:31 PM | Greens and Blacks all the way. Both look increadably awesome and have cool as ablities aswell. I especially LOVE the design of the black dragon. IMO the dragons have never looked better. |
| Mr.Waesel11-16-03, 01:31 PM | The whites, out of pity :( |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast11-16-03, 01:33 PM | Blacks are very high in my list.....I think after Crystal and Silver, Black and then Gold are next. |
| Ramses III11-16-03, 03:30 PM | I was really into Dragonriders of Pern, so my favorite are the Bronze Dragons (a recurring one in my campaigns is named Mnementh). |
| Dackad11-16-03, 03:36 PM | Originally posted by Mr.Waesel The whites, out of pity :( The whites are like the inbred hillbillies of the True Dragons. :D I kinda feel bad for them as well... Out of all the True Dragons... Shadow Dragons, Blue Dragons, and Silver Dragons |
| BladeBoy11-16-03, 05:28 PM | Silver, Gold, then Ruby. |
| Zeed11-16-03, 05:42 PM | Fang Dragons just look madly wicked and I enjoy the ability drain and increased damage they deal, I also like Hellfire Wyrm. But for the good dragons I like the copper dragon because its a prankster ^.^ |
| Vaalingrade Ashland11-16-03, 05:50 PM | Black or green. Not only are they my colors, but comeon -- someone bothering you? Scour them from this world with a blast of acid or chlorine gas.. There is nothing else nearly as badass. I'd like to see a group of blacks and greens go Gold hunting  |
| Leon Dragonheart11-16-03, 07:54 PM | I like the design of the black dragons, but I prefer, because of their ability of draining blood the vampiric dragons. Dracoliches are always at the second place of my rank. |
| Naga_Slayer11-16-03, 08:56 PM | Crystals an Emeralds. I love gemdragons. I also like Shadow and Deep Dragons as well as Steel Dragons (sadly, a lot of 2e dragons are not around:( ). |
| Buddha the DM11-16-03, 10:56 PM | Amethyst Dragons first here, then Silver Dragons, then Bronze are my favorites... |
| Bahgtru11-16-03, 11:21 PM | Adamantite and Shadow. |
| Ash Grey11-16-03, 11:50 PM | I like Shadow and Silver(2e), with black and deep dragons tying for third. |
| dragonlord55711-17-03, 12:10 AM | I think my favorite is black, white, or sliver just to hard to choose between all the wonderful dwagons:D |
| Vanigo11-17-03, 12:21 AM | Originally posted by Ash Grey I like Shadow and Silver(2e), with black and deep dragons tying for third. What's wrong with 3e silver dragons? |
| Everach11-17-03, 12:37 AM | 1. Shadow Where used: Underground Tactics: Sow confusion with darkness and illusion spells. Apply level drain liberally. 2. Black Where used: Swamps and Marshy Forests Tactics: Submerged lair surrounded by lizard men or similar. PCs get to contend with hidden pools of water, hampered movement, restless natives and a trip under water to reach the lair proper, where the dragon awaits with all the usual defenses. 3. SilverWhere used: Anywhere a dragon NPC is useful. Tactics: Disguise as an elven sorceror and join the party. Be sure to slip "odd" knowledge now and then until the PCs figure it out. I'd love to give the Rust Dragon a spin, but I fear being lynched by my party. |
| Ash Grey11-17-03, 01:45 AM | -To Vanigo: Oh just this and that, nothing major, plus I liked there 2e look way more:) On the subject of dragons, tan dragons are cool, I haven't seen many of those lately. |
| Ryltar Swordsong11-17-03, 01:49 AM | I always liked Sapphire Dragons the most. |
| Sprue Rubbles11-18-03, 03:36 PM | Blue for its relation to lightning and just a cool color for a dragon. oh and the horns are nice. Red because it's a classic. Green, another classic, and the chlorine breath weapon. Black for the swamp setting. |
| Shifting Master11-18-03, 03:50 PM | 1. Bronze dragon 2. Shen lung 3. Sapphire dragon 4. Emerald dragon 5. Tarterian dragon |
| Inkubus11-18-03, 04:15 PM | 1) blue dragons (knights of takhisis' favourite mounts) 2) silver dragons (the coolest good dragons) 3) shadow dragons (the level drain breath weapon is just sooo mean, gotta love it) |
| SSj3goblin11-18-03, 04:57 PM | BLACKS!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/games/bl/ba2.gif or the silvers are 2nd , cooler than the gold IMHO , gold are too "high" Styx dragons are REALLY nice but the illustration from dragon was better than the one from DrAC. http://www.paulsxp.com/smilies/games/bl/bayelfly.gif cool dragons pic http://www.computerpannen.com/cwm/games/bl/bafly.gif |
| hiryuu11-18-03, 07:14 PM | Wyverns, bro. Closest thing to a true western or european dragon anywhere in the entire core books. |
| Dragon Acolyte11-18-03, 07:19 PM | Silver and Shadow |
| baneofkobolds11-18-03, 08:25 PM | i personally like bronze dragons for numerous reasons |
| 42up11-18-03, 08:54 PM | Out of metallics, i like coppers Out of Chromatics, blacks Other-Radiant or Fang |
| Boondoggle11-18-03, 09:10 PM | Song dragons, all the way. The combination of bard & dragon rocks. They get true seeing, the shape of a copper dragon & the color of a silver, kick ass domains (healing, anyone?) and cool special abilities. |
| LoneWarriorAuronX11-18-03, 09:10 PM | deffinatly the Styx dragons. its such an awsome thought that your very soul may be consumed by a dragon lurking in the river Styx. after that i love silver dragons and gold dragons, with a little bit of red on the side. |
| The Man of Three Waters11-18-03, 10:15 PM | Metallic- Bronze Chromatic- Red (classic) Gem- Amethyst (can't wait to have my PCs face a one eyed, one horned flying purple dragon) |
| DragonFan11-18-03, 11:18 PM | Adamantite Dragons for sure. they are massive and love physical combat, and a chaotic good would make an awesome bloodscale fury. |
| Shylo Slick11-18-03, 11:51 PM | Brown dragons, nothing is more terrifying to a party than to see one of their members snatched and dragged a thousand feet below the surface of the desert sands, and rescue or revenge is out of the question. |
| Kain's avatar11-19-03, 12:44 AM | Don't you stop seeing them after they are 1 foot underneath the sand? |
| Tenzhi11-19-03, 02:37 AM | In 2nd Edition my absolute favourite was the Crystal Dragon... but in 3.x the Crystal Dragon is too big. I like gold Dragons, the dragons from OA, and the Amethyst dragon. |
| Aranamarunda11-19-03, 06:19 AM | I like the Silver Dragon the most, due to The Dragons, by Dougless Niles I think. The black Dragon comes next, just looks really cool. From the Non-Cromatic-Metallic-Gem Dragons: I like the Steel Dragon the most (have a very cool NPC Steel Dragon called Kelverion). After that, the Shadow Dragon for certain! Pure evil illusionist drain sucker.:) |
| The White Sorcerer11-19-03, 06:27 AM | Silver dragons, due to simple kick-assness. They're just so cool (they are Cold dragons, after all). |
| Gez11-19-03, 07:38 AM | Brass. Despite being an alloy, they are among the core true metallic elite. ;) Plus they are the only one who knows how to use fire in a line rather than a cone. My favorite right now would be Yellow and Amber. |
| Obormot11-19-03, 08:50 AM | Silvers are the best. Cloudwalking is a very, very cool ability, plus they just look awesome. White dragons come second. (I like [Cold] creatures.) |
| Rabe11-19-03, 09:18 AM | Ever since reading the DL books describing the relationship of the Blue Dragonlord and her dragon Skie I have liked the blues. My second favorite is green. I dont like the good ones, as they have little to no personality, and for a good party they are not the ideal BBEGs. Outside the true dragons, my all-time favorite is the Shadow Dragon, most feared of all by my players since encountering a single one in the DL campaign in 1988...they never forgot his terrible breath and his demise is still remembered fondly (he was decapitated with the vorpal sword in the same module during the first round of melee). Rabe |
| Elven Warlord11-20-03, 07:54 PM | Id say mine are brown dragons and prolly blue dragons |
| Marksman11-20-03, 08:04 PM | Bronze!!!!WOO!!!! And if this were more of a "Favorite Draconic Race,"I'd say Bronze Dragon THEN Dread Linnorm...Just the Two heads with Fire/Ice thing...and the fact that they like talking to their food! |
| (Psi)SeveredHead11-20-03, 08:17 PM | I like linnorms too - paralysis breath weapon and, oh yeah, cleric spells. Can you say righteous might and antilife shell? (Yes, I know most true dragons can cast cleric spells anyway. However ... the breath weapon ... OMG!) IMC black dragons are called "shadow drakes" and have lower intelligence and no magic. They are slightly more agile and make good hunters. Players fear them, for good reason. Blue dragons are called "sea dragons" and don't live in the desert, but in the ocean. They are more intelligent and more magical than reds IMC, but reds still win due to sheer kick-buttness, plus a better breath weapon. Red dragons, of course. Gem dragons are cool, especially amethyst dragons ("did he just spit on me?"). Pretty much any of the types are fun to use, but watch out for the non-elemental breath weapons  |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.11-20-03, 08:17 PM | Silver dragons, a dragon that likes to be human as a favorite choice for a human who thinks it would be pretty damn cool to be a dragon. |
| lukelightning11-21-03, 09:46 AM | My favorite evil dragon is old greeny (blue a close second). Favorite good one is bronze. As far as art goes, I don't like the black dragon's horns....they seem to block its mouth too much. And I don't like the brass/copper/gold dragon wings. |
| Hodo11-21-03, 11:19 AM | Copper for metallic and Red for chromatic. Copper dragons just seem as if they'd be alot of fun to encounter; some massive creature capable of tearing your head off or blasting you with its breah weapon, and all it really wants is to hear a funny joke or riddle. I also like their simpler design. Red dragons are just classic. |

I also like their simpler design. Red dragons are just classic. I don't care much for the others not found in the Monster Manual. I don't think they fit the more "natural" feel that the original MM dragons have. |
| Vonton11-21-03, 11:45 AM | Mercurial from 2e. They are small and very fast. My half dragon was half mercurial. |
| mrgronkle11-21-03, 01:23 PM | Not quite a pure, true dragon, but IMC (**STOP IF YOU ARE ONE OF MY PLAYERS!**) there's a ghost red dragon of indeterminable age and size. He was an ambitious mortal man who bargained with an evil deity for immortality, and was transformed into a great wyrm red dragon that could not be slain by any known method. He's not happy with having to live forever, and whenever he's killed, he returns as a ghost. He's been banished, put to sleep, and reborn countless times, so his current (for the last few centuries) tactic is to be so remarkably evil that heroes rise to the task who will be able to defeat him (my PCs.) He even has gone as far as to disguise himself as a mortal and interfere with the mating of humans among generations, trying to create a god-man (kind of like the Dune Kwizatz Haderach idea). One of m PCs is the latest of his attempts, and the wyrm is becoming impatient, thinking this is his best chance at finding oblivion. |
| DragonGanger11-21-03, 02:25 PM | Copper dragons are my favourites. They are funny, cool-looking... and always with an eye out for money despite being good-aligned ("What's in it for me?") I also like Green, Blue, Red and Bronze. |
| The Ethereal Wickerman11-21-03, 05:30 PM | Blue and Blacks, they have the coolest breath weapons...:D |
| Nighttfall11-21-03, 05:35 PM | All must bow to the great power of the Slacerian Dragon! :) Anything that can use Mord's Disjunction as a breath weapon MUST be feared! :D |
| Jharviss11-21-03, 11:47 PM | I used to love the blue dragon because of Dragonlance (Knights of Takhisis rock)... but I don't like the way they overall look in D&D. Among the three main dragon types, I'd say I like blacks the best, although I dislike their swamp inhabiting habits. Greens are cool, but I think they look badly as well. I tend not to judge the gems, and the chromatic are... well, boring. Ultimately, the force dragon is awesome. How can you not respect a dragon made completely out of force? It's the greatest. But after that, the pyroclastic dragon is the best. Being the lumbering thing it is isn't overly cool, but the fact that it's breath weapon instantly destroys anything it touches if it fails the fortitude save is awesome. A great wyrm pyroclastic dragon with a breath weapon DC of 40+ kills just about anything it hits with it's breath weapon. Resistance is futile :twitch: |
| Nighttfall11-21-03, 11:52 PM | I respect force and pyroclastic dragons. But true fear for me is a great wyrm Slacerian dragon. :D |
| green_yawgmoth11-22-03, 12:02 AM | Is the hellfire wyrm from MM2 considered a "true dragon"? That thing is sweet. 14d10, 50 ft. cone of fire, half of it can't be prevented by fire immunity. Not to mention the immense amount of spell-like abilities at will it gets. If it isn't, then I pick shadow dragon. I'm a big fan of temporary level drain. |
| Boondoggle11-22-03, 02:32 AM | Frankly, the hellfire wyrm is over CR'd. A mature adult red dragon has the equiavlent or better combat statistics. The only thing the hellfire wyrm has going is its 37 SR and its caster level 20 for its spell like abilities. Oh, R.M.G.C.L.F., if you want a dragon that masquerades as human, check out the song dragon. That's another reason they're my favorite. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht11-22-03, 07:09 PM | My favorite true dragon? I like all 15. |
| Artificer12-30-03, 10:09 PM | Silver! I love the image of a dragon high above, reclining on a cloud, chin propped up in his hand. Lazily surveying his vast territory for any signs of tresspass. I also visualize a snoozing Silver, catlike with one leg hanging over a clouds' edge, slowly sliding off of his gradually dissipating cloud, unaware of the minor embarrassment he will soon suffer... "Hey dude, did that cloud just drop a dragon?" If you've ever seen a sleeping cat slowly slide off a couch, you know the image I mean. I don't know why, but I've always seen them as the most catlike in attitude and demeanor. |
| unusualsuspect12-30-03, 10:30 PM | It really depends on the setting we're talking about, but based solely on the MM3.5 (which is one pretty much my only book with dragons in it), I would say my favorites are thus: Metallic - Bronze Dragon. When I look at the illustrations of all the metallic dragons, only one really gave me a sense of wisdom, intelligence, grace, AND power in the illustration. Something about the way the Bronze Dragon's head is shaped, in addition to the body and wing position, just gives it an aire of intelligence and wisdom, while similarly reminding me of a muscular, reptilian feline. The breath weapon of a line of lightning, i think, really works wonders with the illustration of the Bronze Dragon. The fact that the Bronze Dragons are somewhat pacifistic, in a sense, and enjoy observation as much as, if not more then, fighting, really puts them ahead, IMHO, of the other metallic dragons. Chromatic - Red Dragon. On a personal level, the reason I like Red Dragons more then, say, Blues(who have, as mentioned above, my favorite type of breath weapon), is strictly in the illustration. Perhaps I'm simply being cynical, but to me, only the Red Dragon and to a lesser extent the White and Green Dragon got illustrations that looked... well, not real, but not cartoony. Slightly pronounced in the Black Dragon Illustration, the cartooniness of the Blue Dragon's illustration was kind of a put down. Overall, Blue Dragons have the potential to be, really, the BEST chromatic dragon, but the oversized feet, eyes, and head of the Blue Dragon made it look like an anime character on drugs. As for why, of the rest, the Red dragon is best... Its classic. I simply can't love the Red Dragon's arrogance enough, and the size, shape, and inherit power of the dragon backs that arrogance up. Like the Bronze Dragon, the Red Dragon shows a great deal of intelligence in its illustration, and the arrogance can really be seen in the picture as well, though wisdom isn't really to be found (and for good reason!) Others - Psuedodragon. Lacking the material or pictures of the other types of dragons, There isn't much choice that i have (besides that damnable Dragon Turtle... blech). Nevertheless, Psuedodragons still rock. They are tiny, intelligence, and love to play tricks... they're my favorite of the trickster dragons, simply because they look so damn cool. |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast12-31-03, 02:37 PM | The fact that the Bronze Dragons are somewhat pacifistic, in a sense, and enjoy observation as much as, if not more then, fighting, really puts them ahead, IMHO, of the other metallic dragons. I dont mean to pick at little things, but arent Bronze Dragons the metallics that enjoy warfare and tactics and join armies? Anyway, I agree that Bronze Dragons do look good, but I think the Silver Dragon looks wise, regal etc. too. |
| kattattack2212-31-03, 03:08 PM | Probably been said a hundred times all ready, but the Red Dragon is my favorite. It is everything I except of a dragon, fire breathing death machine that refuses to die. |
| Champion of Arvandor01-01-04, 06:17 PM | Well my favorites for true drangons have to be a tye between the red, blue, shadow, and silver dragons. How about any other kind of dragons other than true, like extraplaner for instance. My favorite extraplanar dragons are pyroclastic dragons and styx dragons. |
| Nightblade01-01-04, 06:31 PM | My favorites dragons are prismatic and force dragon. ;) |
| Lord Tarran01-03-04, 12:23 AM | Chormatic: Reds (Gotta love the classic dragon) Metallic: Silvers (They fight reds, why else) Gem: Sapphires (They kill drow, illithid, aboleth. What's not to like?) Other True: Shadows (Oh so cool.) Other Good: Feldrakes (Don't know why) Other Evil: Hellfires (Do I need to say why) Other in general: Dragon Turtle (I'm writing a campaign where Dragon turtles are more intelligent than emerald dragons, and ferry people around the world) |
| Edymnion01-03-04, 01:24 AM | A half-silver black dragon. Its got the awesome body plan of the black dragon, but has shining silver scales along its underbelly and silver wingskin. And between the evil black dragon, and the good silver dragon, I figure it would come up as being Neutral. Give him the Black Dragon's swamp lair, and that once a day cold breath weapon, it can drag people into the water, then blast them with cold to encase them in ice. I can just see it sipping on an Adventurer Daquiri, can't you? |
| Willie the Duck01-03-04, 04:48 PM | Okay people, let's make one thing clear: TRUE DRAGON = ANYTHING WITH 12 AGE CATEGORIES! That said I like Metallic: Bronze Chromatic: Blue Gem: Emerald Planar: Well, I like the idea of the battle dragon, but they just suck statistically. I see no reason for the radiant dragon to even exist (it's a gold dragon, only shinier. At low levels its better because it's breath weapon is force, but it loses spellcasting as it ages). Does anyone know why planar dragons don't get sorcerer levels? |
| SirisC01-03-04, 05:50 PM | My favorite dragons are mercury and plutonium dragons |
| SirisC01-03-04, 05:51 PM | Originally posted by Willie the Duck Planar: Well, I like the idea of the battle dragon, but they just suck statistically. | ibitak8401-03-04, 06:56 PM | Gotta love green dragons. For once, they're green, which is the ultimate right colour for dragons, and they are classical in every other way, too. They just lack the fiery breath, but, hey... there's feats and spells out there! |
| Boondoggle01-04-04, 03:14 AM | Originally posted by Willie the Duck Okay people, let's make one thing clear: TRUE DRAGON = ANYTHING WITH 12 AGE CATEGORIES! I only gots one thing to say to you: TROGDOR the BURNINATOR!! (http://www.homestarrunner.com/sbemail58.html) |
