| Rake12-09-05, 02:35 AM | Look about right? Feel like a CR 1/3? FEATHER FAN Tiny Magical Beast Hit Dice: ¼ d10–1 (1 hp) Initiative: +3 Speed: 5 ft. (1 square), fly 40 (good) Armor Class: 15 (+2 size, +3 Dex) Base Attack/Grapple: +1/-10 Attack: Tail +4 melee (1d2–3) Full Attack: Tail +4 melee (1d2–3) Space/Reach: 2½ ft./0 ft. Special Attacks: Quills Special Qualities: Darkvision 60ft, low-light vision, mimicry Saves: Fort +1, Ref +5, Will +1 Abilities: Str 5, Dex 17, Con 9, Int 5, Wis 12, Cha 7 Skills: Bluff +0, Escape Artist +4, Spot +2 Feats: Weapon Finesse Environment: Warm forests Organization: Pair or flock (8-16) CR: 1/3 Treasure: None Alignment: Usually chaotic neutral A feather fan resembles a small, feathery manta ray – frail, colorful, and beautiful – with long, graceful wings and a tail bristling with tiny quills. The average feather fan is approximately 1’ long and weighs less than 1 lb. Feather fan can speak Auran, though they rarely choose to. Feather fan achieve flight nonmagically, via their flimsy wings and a small internal air bladder. Mimicry (Ex): A feather fan can perfectly mimic familiar sounds, voices, and accents. This ability does not enable a feather fan to speak languages it can’t normally speak. To duplicate a specific individual’s voice, a feather fan makes a Bluff check; a listener familiar with the voice being imitated must succeed on an opposed Sense Motive check to discern that the voice isn’t genuine. Quills (Ex): A feather fan’s tail bristles with long quills. An opponent hit by a feather fan’s tail attack must succeed on a DC 13 Reflex save or have a quill break off in his or her flesh. Lodged quills impose a cumulative –1 penalty on attacks, saves, and checks per quill. The save DC is Dexterity-based. A quill can be removed safely with a DC 20 Heal check; otherwise, removing a quill deals 1d2 points of damage. *waits for Seeker, dok, smrtgmp, Omau (if he keeps his promises ;)) and the rest of the gang to tear it up* Be gentle, he's only got 9 Con. |
| OamuTheMonk12-09-05, 03:18 AM | The only mechanical problem I can find is this: Base Attack/Grapple: +1/-2 Grapple modifier should be - 10. As a tiny creature, it has a -8 penalty on grapple checks (size modifiers always screw me up too). The name Feather Circle strikes me a bit off, for the type of creature I'm picturing when I read your description--it doesn't seem very circular, really. More of a parroty boomerang-with-a-tail configuration. It's subjective, and I don't really have any alternate suggestions, but when I first read the name, I was picturing kind of a floating halo of white feathers (like an outsider of some kind). Speaks Auran, eh? Extraplanar subtype, possibly, or maybe you could make a note in the flavor text that they emigrated from the EPOA (Elemental Plane Of Air) long ago, and no longer have that subtype. Also a pretty subjective comment. It's tough creating even a marginally interesting low-CR creature--kind of an exercise in restraint. CR 1/3 might be a whsker too high with these stats (a Dire Rat is CR 1/3, has 5 HP, does 1d4 damage with his bite, and has a pretty nasty disease to inflict). So I'd peg these at CR 1/4. A swarm of them would be something to think about, though. All in all, nice work. |
| OamuTheMonk12-09-05, 03:20 AM | You've already altered one of the things I mentioned, before I even made my post! Psychic much? |
| Rake12-09-05, 03:52 AM | :D Yeah, I decided to change the name. The creature evolved as I was writing it up, and 'feather circle' didn't make much sense. I'll edit the grapple modifier (thanks!), and consider a subtype. I'd thought about giving him the air subtype, but how often do magical beasts normally get elemental subtypes? Is it rare? And what kind of elemental connection does it imply? As for the extraplanar subtype, what is that for, exactly? Is that like the 'native' subtype in reverse? Implies extraplanar descent but not extraplanar nativity? By the way, good to see you Omau. Thanks again for the feedback. |
| Rake12-09-05, 02:54 PM | Anyone else want to comment? Especially about the CR, maybe? |
| WCH12-09-05, 03:31 PM | OMG, TPK! This could easily kill an entire party of point buy 25 characters at lvl 1. Then again, so could speaking loudly. Nope, looks fine to me. |
| savant_warlord1312-09-05, 03:44 PM | based on the description, it sounds like it might be an aberration, but it could really go either way |
| cwslyclgh12-09-05, 03:45 PM | I would leave it at CR 1/3, although they are signficantly weaker then a dire rat in many ways, they also have some signficant advantagesm such as a fairly speedy good maneuverability flight speed. |
