Feats and ability scores with LA? [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-13-04, 02:22 PM Does LA (or +xECL if you prefer) count as class levels when determining free feats? How about ability scores?

The DMG certainly seems to suggest so (I'll find the page later if needed), but the 3.5 faq contradicts it (ditto).

Example: Would a drow (la +2) sorcerer 1 have

a) One feat for its one hit die?

b) Two feats for its ecl of 3?

Is the same calculation used for ability increases?

The answer is a. The DMG doesn't even support b. All it says is that LA counts as class levels for the sole purpose of determining when Epic attacks and save bonuses come into play. (This, however, was later errata'ed away. Only class levels now count for that purpose. Not even racial Hit Dice count.)

08-14-04, 11:12 AM Actually, if you look at the Experience for Monsters section at the bottom of page 172 of the 3.5 DMG it says that "a monster [...]adds it class levels, Hit Die and level adjustment toghether when refering to table 3-2 [on page 22 of the PHB]". That being Experience and Level-Depentent Benefits.

I'm still guessing you're right, tho, and that "and Level-Depentent Benefits" should have been dropped in this case to avoid confusing me. :D

08-14-04, 11:20 PM LA does not count when determining the feat you get every 3 levels, and it does not count when determining the ability score increase you get every 4 levels. HD (and class levels) do.
