| Darth Sephiroth09-27-06, 09:56 PM | Note: This is for my Avantiar campaign and are for a rather nasty group on the island, they worship a diety known as the Black Leopard (see the Avantiar link in my sig for more info). I'm trying to figure out the right CR and LA for this template. xXx FELINE CREATURE Feline creatures are furred and catlike in their appearance often mainly in the face with catlike eyes and fur covering their bodies and a lithe grace as they move and a twitching tail. Most of them come into existance via the "blessings" of the Black Leopard diety. This usually happens as a reward for some great service to the cat god. CREATING A FELINE CREATURE “Feline Creature” is an acquired template that can be added to any living, corporeal creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature). A feline creature uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here. Initiative: The feline creature gains a +2 bonus to Initiative Speed: A feline creatures base speed increases by 20 ft. Further, the feline creature gains a 20 ft climb speed. A creature with a climb speed gains a +8 bonus to all climb checks and may take 10 on any climb check. Armor Class: Natural armor improves by +2. Attack: A feline creature has two claw attacks and a bite attack, and the claws are the primary natural weapon. If the base creature can use weapons, the feline creature retains this ability. A feline creature fighting without weapons uses a claw when making an attack action. When it has a weapon, it usually uses the weapon instead. Full Attack: A feline creature fighting without weapons uses both claws and its bite when making a full attack. If armed with a weapon, it usually uses the weapon as its primary attack and its bite as a natural secondary attack. If it has a hand free, it uses a claw as an additional natural secondary attack. Damage: Feline creatures have bite and claw attacks. If the base creature does not have these attack forms, use the damage values in the table below. Otherwise, use the values below or the base creature’s damage values, whichever are greater. Size Bite Damage Claw Damage Fine 1 — Diminutive 1d2 1 Tiny 1d3 1d2 Small 1d4 1d3 Medium 1d6 1d4 Large 1d8 1d6 Huge 2d6 1d8 Gargantuan 3d6 2d6 Colossal 4d6 3d6 Special Attacks: A feline creature retains all the special attacks of the base creature and gains a pounce attack Pounce (Ex): If a feline creature charges a foe, it can make a full attack. Special Qualities: A feline creature has all the special qualities of the base creature, plus Evasion, Feline Empathy, Low-Light Vision, and Scent. Saves: The feline creature gains a +4 to all reflex saves Abilities: Increase from the base creature as follows: Dex +4, Cha +2. Skills: A feline creature gains a +4 bonus to Balance and Climb checks, and a +2 bonus to all Jump, Listen, Spot, and Tumble checks. Feats: The feline creature gains Combat Reflexes and Weapon Finesse as bonus feats Environment: Same as either the base creature Challenge Rating: Same as the base creature + 2 Alignment: As base creature Level Adjustment: Same as base creature +2. |
| Darth Sephiroth09-28-06, 02:18 AM | Made a slight edit, I'm also working on an example for this at the moment |
| BladefellMaster09-28-06, 10:07 AM | not bad actually, when i saw the title i thought "this is gonna suck", but i do beleive i was wrong... it happens every now and then. i do think you need to up the CR to +2, either that or base it on a scale that is higher with the more hd the creature has...i dunna know |
| Darth Sephiroth09-28-06, 02:40 PM | Increased the CR to +2, is the LA about right or should it also increase. I wasn't sure because it didn't seem quite as effective as the half-dragon or many of the other templates at +3 |
| Vanigo09-28-06, 07:45 PM | Needs more fluff. What do they look like? How do they act? Who does the Black Leopard transform? Why? |
| Darth Sephiroth09-28-06, 08:16 PM | Most of that I'm still hammering out, for appearance the current view is grow fur and catlike changes to the body such as the face and grow a tail and claws. The transformation is something I was planning on having be granted to those blessed by the Black Leopard and they manifest the template, not quite sure as to the why other than crazy cat worshipers. |
| Darth Sephiroth09-29-06, 01:28 PM | Added a bit more fluff to the template. I'm still wondering about the mechanical part, I think it's about right for the LA increase, but does anyone else have an opinion? |
| ZeronHitaro09-29-06, 01:59 PM | Too tired to do any sort of in depth review of mechanics or anything, but I will say I find it humorus that by the rules of this template you can have a "Feline Riding Dog". |
| Talisman09-29-06, 02:44 PM | Looks good, and I think LA and CR are both just about right at +2. It depends on the character, of course; a two-weapon fighter might be worth a +3 (100' of movement followed by 4-8 attacks!!), while a spellcaster might be only +1. All in all, pretty good. The only nit I see to pick is that you neglected to note that having a Climb speed grants the feline creature a +8 bonus on Climb checks and the ability to take 10. |

Thanks for catching that, I'd totally forgotten it. |
| Andorxor09-29-06, 03:39 PM | You could aply this templates to cats too. |
| Darth Sephiroth09-29-06, 04:24 PM | Yes, but you wouldn't really get that much for it |
| otakutaylor09-29-06, 04:56 PM | Stupid comment: Wouldn't adding Feline to a riding dog just make it a riding fox? That is the most feline like canine, isn't it? I'm not sure if evasion and combat reflexes aren't a little too strong or not. Also, cats usually have good eyes and ears, right? maybe +2 to listen and spot or the Alertness feat? Low light vision usually covers the eyes being better, but the ears need something if they're not just for decoration. |
| Darth Sephiroth09-29-06, 05:10 PM | Low-Light vision is something I thought fit and it fits with Scent as something for a more animalistic aproach. +2 to Listen and Spot would work though |
| Darth Sephiroth10-01-06, 01:00 AM | :bump: I'd really like some more thoughts on this |
| theblindman10-03-06, 08:50 PM | I'm glad to see you're still working on this DS. It has a good feel too, I think it'll add a lot to your setting. I'd love to see a Feline Hill Giant rampaging through the island. It occured to me that if you combine the bonuses to reflex and initiative and AC with the bonus to dexterity you're actually looking at a template that grants: Reflex Saves +6 Initiative +4 AC +4 (when not flatfooted) Plus if weapon finesse can apply to natural claw attacks you're looking at +2 to 3 natural attacks. When compared to the base classes at 2nd level, I think that's a little bit more powerful than +2 LA, but not a lot. By way of testing, apply this template to a CR half creature like an Orc and have him go at it with a 2nd level human fighter. If the Feline Orc wins, it's LA+3 at least. |
| Darth Sephiroth10-03-06, 11:28 PM | It worked about even with a Level 1 Feline Orc Barbarian against a level 3 Orc Barbarian. The extra HP from 2 levels match the bonus' granted by the template in my use. |
| Foxhengeyokai10-03-06, 11:43 PM | If you were to add this template to a japanese schoolgirl, what would happen? |
| Darth Sephiroth10-04-06, 12:14 AM | :nonono:  Hadn't really thought of that, but normally that type of cat creature is less of the bite and maul people version. |
| bhu10-04-06, 12:41 PM | yay for Kitties :cheer: :dancin: :cheer: Seriously the Monsters board can always use more kitties :P |
| Foxhengeyokai10-04-06, 12:54 PM | Sorry about that, I just got through reading the "Monstrous women" thread and had my mind in other places.... |
| Talisman10-04-06, 03:41 PM | If you were to add this template to a japanese schoolgirl, what would happen? You would get a creature that could single-handedly destroy the Tarrasque and Godzilla simultaneously, all the while emitting high-pitched squeals. But what she really wants is to be a maid. See, I watch anime too. |
| Darth Sephiroth10-04-06, 04:56 PM | I was aiming more for the anthro than catgirl look for this. My aim was something more along the lines of the Drider's connection to the Drow with this for the campaign I'm designing. |
