| Vatras03-24-05, 01:11 PM | Dont you think he is definitely lacking in oomph, as he did in Odin, chief of the norse gods? |
| Barloch03-24-05, 01:12 PM | the brachryus (sp?) in the epic levels handbook represents the fenris wolf if you have that just to let ya know. But that monsters for epic campaigns |
| Quarterstaff03-24-05, 01:15 PM | no way, the fenris wolf is not just huge. it was said to blot out the sky. it is definatly represented in the brahcyrus thing in the epic handbook |
| Insane Pixie03-24-05, 01:19 PM | Errr...I checked the SRD, and the brachy is only Large... |
| Mirtek03-24-05, 01:27 PM | The fenris wolf should be a DvR 0 (or an abomination if you only use epic rules) |
| Barloch03-24-05, 01:38 PM | no way, the fenris wolf is not just huge. it was said to blot out the sky. it is definatly represented in the brahcyrus thing in the epic handbook Are you talking about the fenris or FenRIR? the son of loki. theres a diffrence. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht03-24-05, 02:10 PM | Are you talking about the fenris or FenRIR? the son of loki. theres a diffrence. Fenris and Fenrir are the same being. The spelling just differs. Like Jormugand and Jormugandr, or, to use an example outside the Norse Mythos, Set, Seth, and Sutekh. |
| Nuntius12803-24-05, 02:33 PM | no way, the fenris wolf is not just huge. it was said to blot out the sky. it is definatly represented in the brahcyrus thing in the epic handbook In defence of the huge size, most of the people who said that were Medium-sized. :D Huge is quite astonishing to most Medium-sized commoners, and hard to see around. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht03-25-05, 07:19 PM | In defence of the huge size, most of the people who said that were Medium-sized. :D Huge is quite astonishing to most Medium-sized commoners, and hard to see around. But opening his maw and touching both the ground and the sky is a bit more than huge. |
| SammasterT03-25-05, 08:20 PM | But opening his maw and touching both the ground and the sky is a bit more than huge. He would open it even further still, if there were but room. Of course, putting aside the metaphor of it all, all the elder myths really specify is that Fenriswulf is bigger than your average wolf. While this fenris wolf creation that we have here would seem to be a unique genus of wolves, and not THE singular and unique Fenris wolf, one might consider adding somekind of swallow whole ability to his stats ... which seems very much justified based upon the descriptions. Another of Fenris' traits is his strength. I'm not sure how that might be incorporated, but one might want to make these wolves highly resistent to any type of restraints .... be they physical or magical. |
| Hammerhead03-25-05, 08:33 PM | He's probably not as big as the midgard serpent though. |
| Manyfist03-25-05, 08:51 PM | Midgard Serpent is I would have to say, VERY COLOSSAL. I guess you would have to make a size larger than Colossal, Cosmic? |
| Starmage2103-26-05, 03:32 AM | Brachyurus' definitely make ideal Fenris Wolf types. |
| Minister_for_Moral_Truth03-26-05, 06:42 AM | Unless, of course, this is the kind of Fenris Wolf that Ragnar Blackmane was said to have slain with his bare hands, then you're probably going over what it should be. :D |
| black dragon karameikos04-03-05, 04:38 AM | I have to agree with Vatras, you're making Fernis Wolf totally under-powered. It is said that he is fated to swallow Odin at the time of Ragnarok. And in the Deities and Demigods book Odin is stated as being medium sized, so Fernis Wolf would have to be gigantic size or larger to be able to swallow Odin. As for the Divine rank of Fernis, I would make him at least Divine rank 1 to Divine rank 5, this would make him a demigod which is what Fernis Wolf is. After all he is the son of Loki. There was one thing I saw that you forgot in your writeup of Fernis Wolf, you forgot about his bite attack. His bite attack is similar to the hit of a vorpal sword, in which it will sever the bodypart which it bites. Also you need to up his hit dice, he doesn't have enough, I think 10D10 is a bit LOW, I would go 20D10 at least, 25-30D10 would be better though. I would also double his speed, don't forget he is a wolf and can move a lot faster than a peson can. As for his Abilities, his STR is good but I would give him a DEX of 18-20, his CON is fine as well but I would give him a INT of 16-18 as he was known to be very crafty, His WIS score is fine but I would bring up his CHA score to at least what his WIS score is. otherwise I think you have a good creature  |
| Endless Dave04-03-05, 10:54 AM | Guys you're missing the point. This isn't the world-devouring divine wolf of norse mythology - it's a well-designed D&D monster with the same name. Kudos. |
| Starmage2104-03-05, 12:05 PM | Guys you're missing the point. This isn't the world-devouring divine wolf of norse mythology - it's a well-designed D&D monster with the same name. Kudos. Then you should use the Brachyurus. |
| MinionOfCthulhu04-03-05, 12:06 PM | Guys you're missing the point. This isn't the world-devouring divine wolf of norse mythology - it's a well-designed D&D monster with the same name. Kudos. No, what he's done is make a well-designed D&D monster and named it after a giant world-devouring wolf so that everyone would think it's supposed to be the actual Fenris wolf. Why bother using the name if you're not going to stat it out correctly? Here, let me try my hand at the Midgar Serpent along the same lines. Size: Small.... |
| SammasterT04-03-05, 12:39 PM | As for the Divine rank of Fernis, I would make him at least Divine rank 1 to Divine rank 5, this would make him a demigod which is what Fernis Wolf is. After all he is the son of Loki. Actually, while Snorri lists Loki as one of the gods, he is technically not a god, but an etin/jotun (nature spirit) as per his parentage. Snorri is notorious for imposing his own view of things upon the mass of lore he inheritted. In this case, Loki's tie to godhood is clearly as a result of his oath-brotherhood with Woden .... errrrr, Odhinn. In Teutonic thought, and Indo-European thought in general, the wolf is symbolic of overweening greed, strife amongst kin, and destruction. Amongst the various Teutonic folk the wolf was also symbolic of the outlaw ... from whence we get such words for outlaw as wolfhead or worg. The Anglo-Saxons would hang capital criminals in the "wolfhead tree", and their native art shows toothy wolf beings eager to devour a radiant headed figure, ie. a god. The continental Germans would at times hang a dog or a wolf alongside particularly vile criminals for symbolic purposes. In the Eddas, Fenriswulf's siblings are the Middle Earth Wyrm and Hell. The common vein running through each of these creatures is their assoication with death and the grave; the wolf being well known as a carrion eater. In Anglo-Saxon poetry, the grave was portrayed as a wolf greedy to devour all life. And so ends this public service announcement, brought to you by your FRIENDLY neighbourhood Saxon ..... |
| eye_sac04-03-05, 08:36 PM | This could make sense if it were a child of the Fenris wolf. But yeah, Odin DIED killing it. |
| Manyfist04-03-05, 10:54 PM | Like Thor V. The Midgard Serpent. |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht04-04-05, 12:49 AM | This could make sense if it were a child of the Fenris wolf. But yeah, Odin DIED killing it. Hell, Odin didn't even manage to kill it. His son did. |
