| the_narrator05-14-05, 07:16 PM | hey all, first time posting in the monsters board, so redirect me if this is the wrong place. anyways, last night i found out one of the most broken templates i've seen in a while: feral. something like +4str, -2 dex, +2 con, -4 int, +2wis, 1D8 claws, darkvision, pounce, natural armor, fast healing, and some other nifty abilities. all for the cost of.....1 level? did i read this right? is this a typo? mechanically, i see no reason not to be feral. i can have alotta fun with this... ::dreams of a half dragon feral ogre barbarian/warhulk/hulkinghurler:: ... |
| The Almighty Dru05-14-05, 09:24 PM | No, it's not a typo. It is very broken. It is widely thought to be one of the most broken things out there. |
| Noc Rat05-15-05, 02:47 AM | Agreed. As a Player, the moment I set eyes on the feral template, I knew it was just too good. My biggest mistake was to MAKE a character with the feral template, since now everyone in the game wants to add the feral to their characters. Then again, on the DM side, slap them on to your favourite battle-beasties (like the blue slaad or a kobold, for extra fun) and enjoy!! |
| the_narrator05-15-05, 02:57 AM | exactly what i thought. and you're right, making a feral character just makes things worse, 'cause everyone wants in on that. like me. heh. what? feral rangers are cool! |
| demonprince005-15-05, 03:05 AM | Its kind of funny that you mention the feral template. None of my players have even attempted to use the feral template. It is mainly intended for use on monsters. Why would you want to use it. The role-playing repercussions could be quite severe. |
| NinjaPenguin05-15-05, 10:03 AM | Actually i kind of like the idea of the roleplaying implications of the Feral template... Using the LA buy-off rules in the Unearthed Arcana I could see playing Feral Wood-Elf Ranger or Druid easily :) Princess Mononoke, anyone? I'm gonna ask my next DM to let me play it and see what happens, though that -6 to Int does sting a bit :P Countered easily by a +6 to Str, no mod to Dex or Con, and a +2 to Wis. I like it a lot :) And a Dire Wolf animal companion eventually, buy it a Collar of Animal Growth... mmm... Sorry, where was I? Oh, yes, broken clean in half ;) |
| Rulebook05-15-05, 02:28 PM | Feral Half-Ogre Barbarian/Frenzied Berzerker/War Hulk. its called Str of over 60 before magic. |
| Nuntius12805-15-05, 03:59 PM | One of my more fun characters is a Feral Orc. But I don't play him like a Barbarian, he's more like a giant cat mixed with a baby. Not a cougar, a house cat. He's very docile, but is also prone to temper tantrums that end with more sobbing than smashing. But, you're right, it is broken like crazy |
| cwslyclgh05-16-05, 02:25 PM | anyways, last night i found out one of the most broken templates i've seen in a while: feral. something like +4str, -2 dex, +2 con, -4 int, +2wis, 1D8 claws, darkvision, pounce, natural armor, fast healing, and some other nifty abilities. all for the cost of.....1 level? did i read this right? is this a typo? mechanically, i see no reason not to be feral. i can have alotta fun with this... ::dreams of a half dragon feral ogre barbarian/warhulk/hulkinghurler:: ... unlike 3.5 templates the feral template was only ment to apply the abilities based upon racial HD, there for a feral orc or human would only get the base abilities of the template (improved grab and fast healing 2), and when used that way it is not nearly as "broken". when you start adding other templates and such and start using higher HD and LA creatures it can seem to get somewhat rediculuos... but as a DM I disallow that kind of stupidity in my game anyway, so it never effects me. |
| Andrew_98005-16-05, 06:26 PM | what you do is make the ROLEPLAY a feral animal, not a person (that is the whole piont) no matter what the scores say they are a feral animal. if they try to be more than the beast they are you just take that template away |
| Shemeska the Marauder05-16-05, 07:15 PM | 1) Yeah, it's a bit broken and I'd never allow a PC to have it unless I had a hole in my head 2) You're cool in my mind simply for using the word 'borked' on this messageboard ;) |
