| Need_A_Life06-30-05, 03:40 PM | I understand that the template is overpowered, what I don't get is why? I heard that it gives a -6 Int so that should cover a lot of the things it can offer. What is so great about that template? BTW I'm going to buy Savage Species sometime this summer, but I'm curious. |
| Arishem06-30-05, 04:20 PM | We'll its only -4 and the benefits completely obliterate any negatives that gives you. Lets see if you would take this random template i am posting here Basically for 1 LA +10 movement Type monstrous humanoid +6 Nat AC !!!!!! Claw attacks Imrpoved Grab Pounce Rake Rend Darkvision Fast Healing +4str +2con +2wis and the Negatives -2dex -4int |

By Savage Species' own rules, several of those items should be a +1 LA by themselves. Rend and fast healing are the two nasty ones. |

| Zym07-01-05, 11:21 AM | Just a note...the majority of those abilities you get only if you have sufficient "Monsterous HD", not "Class HD". A fact overlooked/debated by many if I recall past discussions. At 1 HD (base critter) w/template you never get: Pounce Rake Rend And your Fast healing would be maxxed at 2 and Darkvision at 60' ft. Still hefty for a +1 LA. :behold: |
| Arishem07-01-05, 11:55 AM | Very True, tho alot of people add this template to creatures they create from the Savage Spiecied book that have multiple racial levels. and they get those benefits. Even so without those special attacks its still very overpowered. |
| Iron Cobra07-01-05, 12:01 PM | It's not broken. People just look at the negatives and laugh at them, not realizing how severe a lack of mental faculties is, no matter what mild-given benefits you receive. |
| Arishem07-02-05, 01:28 AM | Thats only true if your a dunce before you take the template. That can be easily remedied by putting a average or better stat in your starting INT. say you start at 15, take away 4 and your still above average intelegence by 3 points. and now you've gained ALL the other benefits. Sure not many wizards are going to take the feral template becasue of the int, but then again i wouldnt have throught they would to begin with. - 4 int for everything you gain IS something i would laugh about. -4 int -2dex is "severe" but to you , +10 movement, Type monstrous humanoid, +6 Natural AC, Claw attacks, Imrpoved Grab, Darkvision, Fast Healing 2, +4str +2con +2wis are "mild given" Gimmie a break |
| Iron Cobra07-02-05, 07:54 AM | Knowledge is power, and that just lot a bit of power. :) |
| Need_A_Life07-02-05, 11:36 AM | Being Monstrous Humanoid makes you immune to "Person" spells (Hold Person, Charm Person) and gives darkvision 60ft., that's fairly good to have but not enough to cause an LA. Fast Healing 1 or even 2 is powerful, it means that you're always high on HP for the next encounter. I've heard of a magic item that granted Fast Healing 2 (ex) and it would take up a large part of your money total (200k) where Feral 'only' costs 1 level. Use LA buy-off in reverse and get the template and a level of monstrous humanoid.... -4 to Int is bad, but not that bad |
| Iron Cobra07-02-05, 01:36 PM | *sighs* Maybe you guys don't appreciate a higher intelligence, that's all... |
| Need_A_Life07-02-05, 03:17 PM | Sure, I prefer a 14 Intelligence (because according to the Tests that's what I have) and a Wisdom to match, but I can stand 8-10 without problems. But what you get is enough to outweigh things. |
| Sarlax07-02-05, 03:19 PM | Maybe you guys don't appreciate a higher intelligence, that's all... Intelligence in D&D is just a way to get skill points, learn some languages, and cast certain arcane spells. You can have Int 6 and still play an interesting, thoughtful, and clever character. Low intelligence imposes only mechanical penalties. |
| Iron Cobra07-02-05, 03:40 PM | I'm looking at it flavorwise, rather than mechanically, thats all. |
