Feral Vampires are a wild and heavily instinctive form of Vampire that are not bound to their coffins. However, without the strengthening effects of their coffins at their disposal, Feral Vampires are considerably weaker and more desperate for the blood they use for sustenance.

The idea of a Feral Vampire is to create a Vampire template with a lower LA and throw the PC's a creature with considerably Un-vampire like behavior, throwing them off from their normal tactics.

Appearance and behavior: If somebody is killed by a Vampire's bite, they rise as a vampire later. However, many of these victims are never granted a coffin that they can reside in and thus have to rely more on blood for survival. Feral vampires often creep around queitly on all fours hunting for creatures that can quench their thirst for blood. Like typical vampires, they single-out a victim that they try to isolate. However, rather than use the charming tactics of a typical vampire, a Feral Vampire stalks its victim until they are alone, pounces, drain blood for as long as they can, then leap away. If assistance appears, they usually stop drinking the blood and run away. Feral Vampires are bent on survival and thus will flee if they appear outmatched.

Stats:

Make the following changes to the Vampire Template:

Armor Class: +4 natural armor rather than +6.

Attack: Replace the slam attack with a claw attack of the same power.

Special Attacks:
A Feral vampire loses Children of the Night and Energy Drain special attacks and changes its dominate effect to a daze spell of caster level 8 rather than dominate monster.

Special Qualities:
Loses Gaseous Form special ability. It can only take the form of a bat with its Alternate Form ability. Its Cold and Electric Resistances as well as its DR become 5 rather than 10. Their Fast Healing also drops to 2. It gains the Blood Dependency Special Quality as described in the Half Vampire template (Libris Mortis).

Abilites: Use these instead of the stats on the Vampire template:
STR +4, DEX +2, WIS +2, Cha -2.

Skills: Feral Vampires have only a +8 bonus on Hide and Move Silently checks.

Feats: Feral Vampires gain Alertness and Lightning Reflexes as bonus feats.

Vampire Weaknesses:
Rather than requiring a coffin to cross running water, a Feral Vampire can simply be carried across as long as they do not actually touch the water. A Feral Vampire does not assume a gaseous form upon being reduced to 0 hp, but goes into an inert state, instead. In this state, it is helpless for 1 hour. It then gains 1 hit point and begins fast healing as normal.

Alignment: Usually Chaotic Neutral. Feral Vampires are driven by instinct and an urge to live and have little time to entertain their evil urges.

The idea of this template is so that if a PC with more than five Hit Dice dies due to a vampire's bite, they can try to keep playing without such a massive LA. Anybody know what the LA on this creature would be?

Funny that you use Feral Vampires as weaker then normal vampires, with me its the other way around, their a hell of a lot scarier and more dangerous becouse they can rely more on their power then normal vampires who require subterfuge.
However my ferals also do not have gaseus form, don't have coffins and don't have energy drain..... but their blood drain is a lot stronger and their children of the night is also more effective.

Still your idea is a very PC friendly one and I applaud you for that, its a good idea and an original take on the Vampiric PC problem.
