Do I roll a specific creature's (for instance a specific ghoul's 2d12 HD within a campaign) HD, to determine the power of its evil aura, or is the aura's power equal to the creature's maximum HD (24 for said ghoul)?

Or, should I not factor in specific creature HD, and just use the base HD (2 for a ghoul), and add 1 HD for every class level?

For instance, if the ghoul is a lvl 1 warrior, is its HD 3 (2 hd for being a ghoul and 1 hd for being lvl 1 warrior)?

Answered:

1) Lord Tulware, mmale ghoul has 2 claws with the following stats: +0 melee (1d3 plus paralysis). Does he only get a single 1d3 attack for his claws? If each claw had an attack, I would have assumed it would be written 1d3/1d3, but I would also assume each claw gets an attack.

Ghoul Fever. Characters that die from this disease raise as an undead the following midnight. Do druids pets stay loyal to them, do they keep their spells, skills, and abilities, etc. Do they seek out and attack former party members?

SA - Goul Fever (Su): disease, bite, Fort Save DC 12, Incubation 1 daym 1d3 Con and 1d3 Dex. A humanoid that dies from ghoul fever rises as a ghoul the following midnight.

Does this (in bold above) suggest there is a penalty OR bonus to the two attributes?

Wandering Monsters. From what distance and manner do they appear from? Are these usually surprise encounters? I'm sure the type of monster varies.

What is Cold Iron Wrought, and how is it useful against to fighting a quasit?

When a paladin uses detect evil and the evil is overwhelming, the character is stunned for one round and the ability no longer accumulates for the third and fourth rounds. Monsters' evilness can be determined by their alignment; however, I can't find where the power of their evil is. Also, if items are of evil nature will it always be stated?

Regarding Ghoul Fever, check your DM guide in page 292, it explains diseases. The 1d3 Con and 1d3 Dex are the ability damage the disease causes.

Your ghoul can attack once with each of his claws and bite when taking the full attack action. That is two claw attacks at +0 for 1d3.

Regarding wandering monsters check again your DM guide it has information of different terrains along with random encounter tables and spotting distances. I believe this is all in chapter 3.

A Quasit has Damage Reduction. Weapons made from Cold Iron (a special material) ignore this damage reduction. Page 291 DM guide.

Thanks. I'll admit I'm being lazy, but I have read (and am reading) a LOT recently, and with work it's beginning to get tiresome.

Can you tell me how I determine the power of a sources evil or good (aura)? I need to know when the paladin in my group may or may not be stunned.

Overwhelming Evil (51 or higher).

The Detect Evil spell comes with a table that explains how strong the aura of an evil creature is. Give the Lingering Aura thing a look. A 9th level+ spellcaster who casts an [Evil] spell (regardless of the caster's alignment) will leave an aura that lingers for 1d6 days. Paladins can actually 'Track' evil clerics/outsiders/undead by folling their lingering aura, which can last for days, depending on strength.

Off course, the other detect spells can be used in the same way.

Thanks, I got it now :)

Edit:

Do I roll the creature's HD, or is the aura's power equal to the creature's maximum HD?

It's equal to the Hit Dice, not the Hit Points.

HD = 2d12. Do I roll that, or do I use the maximum number of the creature? If the latter, this particular ghoul (undead), would have an overwhelming power because the HD is 21 or above (the number listed for undead).

A normal ghoul has 2 HD. If that ghoul were to get 10 levels of <insert class here>, it'd count as a 12 HD undead.

This isn't a normal ghoul, it's a set creature of the campaign. He has a HD of 2d12.

My question is whether or not I ROLL the 2d12, or just give the maximum (24) to determine the power of its evil aura?

Or are you saying I shouldn't factor in specific creature HD, and just use the base HD for a ghoul, and add 1 for every class level?

For instance, if the ghoul is a lvl 1 warrior, is its HD 3 (2 hd for being a ghoul and 1 hd for being lvl 1 warrior)?

Huh?

You have no idea what HD means, do you?

I'm assuming Hit Die.

Here is the situation I'm in:

The paladin used detect evil for 2 rounds.

There is a sarcophagus within range.

Within the sarcophagus lies an Undead creature:

Lord Tulware, undead ghoul: CR 1; Medium undead: HD 2d12, etc...

My question is do I roll the 2d12 or give the maximum HD (24 in this case)? Or do I just give the base HD for a ghoul (2) and add 1 HD for every class level (Lord Taulware is a lvl 1 Warrior, so add 1 HD equaling 3 total)?

'2d12' means 2 HD (= hit dice), and you ROLL for HP (= hitpoints).

Since the creature is of the undead type, all its HD count toward its 'evilness'. So if your creature has 2 racial HD + 1 HD from his warrior class = 3 HD. So the ghoul counts as a 3 HD undead and you don't need to roll any dice.

I think that sort of explains the whole thing, but if I'm not clear feel free to ask for further elaboration.

K, so the latter of my two questions is correct. Ghouls get a 2dx that was rolled to determine their HP. Then I factor in +1 per class level.

Thanks.

Come to think of it, that's a little harsh (for the monster anyway). For this particular lvl 1 Paladin, this undead would have to have 19 class levels, AND its HD would need to be twice that of the paladin's level for its evil aura to be overwhelming. The latter is the case, but he only has 1 class lvl, not 19.

Well, consider making it a cleric or outsider :P

It's tougher on the MONSTER (not the character)!
