| Lokiyn01-14-06, 01:18 AM | For a character concept i was working with i started compileing a list of fey and attempted to find an ecl for them. To put it simply i want to have a leader who has only fey followers and cohorts. A little searching later and i find these Fey from the MM[1-3] and FF (and RotW for Killoren) These Fey have a defined LA and Hit dice allowing easy calculation of Ecl Name Type HD Cr La ECL Book Killoren (Class Levels) Fey 1 0.5 0 1 RoTW Jermlaine Fey 0.5 0.5 0 1 MM2 Faun Fey 1 0.5 0 1 DD FeyTouched Fey 1 0.5 1 2 FF Uldra (Class Levels) Fey 1 0.5 1 2 Frostburn Shardar-Kai Fey 3 1 1 4 FF Grig Fey 0.50 1 3 4 MM1 Nixie Fey 1 1 3 4 MM1 Hybsil Fey 1 1 3 4 Mon of Faerun Pixie Fey 1 4 4 5 MM1 Splinterwaif Fey 2 2 4 6 MM3 Domovoi Fey 2 1 4 6 Frostburn Nereid Fey 3 4 3 6 Stormwrack Satyr Fey 5 2 2 7 MM1 Satyr (Pipes) Fey 5 4 2 7 MM1 Spriggan Fey 5 3 2 7 FF Pixie (Fiddle) Fey 1 5 6 7 MM1 RedCap Fey 4 2 4 8 MM3 Wendigo (T) Fey 4 6 4 8 FF Sirine Fey 4 5 4 8 MM2 Gloura Fey 7 7 2 9 Und Glaistig Fey 6 6 4 10 MM3 Vodyanoi Fey 5 3 5 10 Frostburn Yuki-On-Na Fey 8 4 4 12 Frostburn Nymph Fey 6 7 7 13 MM1 These Fey have the line Level Adjustment --- or no Level Adjustment: Line at all. Because of this these creatures are not suitable for cohorts or for pc characters. However, that does not mean that they couldn't become followers. The reason that these creatures as followers wouldn't be unbalanced is that when you aquire followers they are largely useless in the combat aspect and more of a flavor issue. Also not that out of the creatures in this list. the majority of them are tied to a specific location or they will die. Now to me that explains why they are not pc or cohort able. However as followers you can still make use of them as information sources, contacts, or even as keepers of safehouses, for you and your more mobile fey minions. Name Type HD Cr La ECL Book Rusalka Fey 2 1 --- 2 Frostburn Dryad Fey 4 3 --- 4 MM1 Shimerling Swarm Fey 11 8 --- 11 MM3 Rimfire Eidolon Fey 12 9 --- 12 Frostburn Crosswords Guardian Fey 16 7 --- 16 Mag of Faerun Spirit of the land Fey 20 23 --- 20 MM2 Ragewalker Fey 22 14 --- 22 MM3 Ocean Strider Fey 30 18 --- 30 MM2 Fossergrim Fey 5 5 none 5 FF Oread Fey 7 7 none 7 FF Kelpie Fey 10 10 none 10 FF Hoary Hunter Fey 46 25 none 46 ELH Two fey however had a La Cohort line as is shown Name Type HD Cr La (C) ECL Book Petal Fey 1 1 2 3 MM3 Thorn Fey 6 4 2 8 MM3 Also i found template that are fey/nature related Half Satyr (+1) Dragon 313 Half Nymph (+2) Dragon 313 Half Fey (+2) Fiend Folio Woodling Template (+3) Monster Manuel 3 Wood Elemental Template(+5) Manuel of the Planes Telthor (+2) UE Mirrage Muhllah (int<19) (+3) Sandstorm Mirrage Muhllah (int>18) (+4) Sandstorm Spirit Animal ('---) Frostburn i'll have to look up the location of some of those So its looking like a Follower chart of fey shapes up to something like 1.) Killoren (Class Levels), Jermlaine, or Faun 2.) FeyTouched, Uldra (Class Levels), or Rusalka 3.) Petal 4.) Shardar-Kai, Grig, Nixie, Hybsil, or Dryad 5.) Pixie or Fossergrim 6.) Splinterwaif, Domovoi, or Nereid Out of these choices i would personally choose 1.) Fauns/Jermlaines 2.) Fey Touched/Rusalka 3.) Petal 4.) Shardar-Kai/Dryads 5.) Pixie/Fossergrim 6.) Domovoi Level 1 Followers Fauns are chosen because they are usefuly sized and acceptable in most human communities. However a small portion of Jermlaines will be chosen as well because of thier small size and ability to speak to rats Level 2 Followers Mostly Feytouched to keep with the fey theme, also Charm person 1/day and an immunity to mind affecting make them useful "face men" for this gathering. Rusulka will be asked for permission to build safehouses by thier river or lake. They will act as a hostess for smallish inns In echange for not drowning people they will have thier lonlieness abated by river travelers and act as sources of information as well as the ever important Fey safehouse. Level 3 Followers Petals, well aside from the fact that they are the only Ecl 3 Fey (Cohort La) they should be able act as messangers and attendantes to the Fey incharge of the safe houses as well as the party. Or if needed i could call in the lot of them for aid. the 7-14 petals (depending on extra follower or not) should bump the Dc for sleep save up to 20 or 27, Or working with the Max 49 Petals a Dc of 62 Will is possible. Level 4 Followers Shardar-Kai, aside from the basics these will make excellent spys in exchange for occationally taking one to the shadow plane to reaffix thier souls. A few Dryads will be chosen and Safe houses will be built in or arround thier trees in exhange for protection and proffessional care of thier trees. (immagine each safehouse built like a ring centered around a garden with a tree as the centerpiece.) Assuming the outer porch is built at a outer raduis of 340 ft and a simple ring structure is built (30Ft wide 5 ft porches) thats at max 102 stronghold spaces. enough for 1/8th of the fey to rest comfortably in. Level 5 Followers Pixies for fun and usefulness (superior invisibility, and special arrows) Fossergrim for safe houses/watermills Level 6 followers. Domovoi hands down. with thier various fire abilities as well as thier proclivity to serve they will make excellent Butlers and managers. Now the purpose of this post is twofold 1.) Gather more fey for the list 2.) See if i'm calculating these Ecls correctly Using the tactics i first used in a character challange and borrowing from another posters attempt to maximize cohorts i believe i can eek out roughly Level 1 945 Level 2 91 Level 3 49 Level 4 28 Level 5 14 Level 6 14 1141 fey without any real effort, For a truly Fey-tastic time |
| Borris01-14-06, 03:13 AM | When a creature has no level adjustment line, it means it's not suitable as a PC. It's the same as if it were given a Level Adjustment of -. It does not mean the creature has a level adjustment of 0. Your second and third tables should probably get merged into one. If you check the D&D 3.5 Update Booklet (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/dnd/20030718a), however, you'll see that many of the monsters you listed as having no LA entry do have one in their 3.5 updated version. From Monster Manual II The Jermlaine has a LA of +0. The Ocean Strider now has a LA of -. The Sirine has a LA of +4. The Spirit of the Land has a LA of -. From Deities and Demigods The Faun is a 1HD fey with a LA of +0. CR 1/2. From Epic Level Handbook The Hoary Hunter is a CR 25, 46 HD fey (cold) with no LA. From Monsters of Faerūn The Hybsil is a 1HD fey with a LA of +3. CR 1. From Magic of Faerūn The Crosswords Guardian is a CR 7, 16HD fey with a LA of -. From Underdark The Gloura 7HD fey with a LA of +2. CR 7. From Frostburn The Domovoi is a 2HD fey with a LA of +4. CR 1. The Uldra is a 1HD (class levels) fey with a LA of +1. CR 1/2. The Vodyanoi is a 5HD fey with a LA of +5. CR 3. The Yuki-On-Na is a 8HD fey with a LA of +4. CR 4. The Rusalka is a CR 1, 2HD fey with a LA of -. The Rimefire Eidolon is a CR 9, 12HD fey with a LA of -. From Stormwrack The Nereid is a 3HD fey with a LA of +3. CR 4. I don't really understand what the woodling and wood elemental templates have to do with feys, but I did find the following templates that grant the fey type. From Unapproachable East Telthor. CR +1. LA +2. From Sandstorm Mirage Mullah. CR +2. LA +3 (+4 if Charisma exceeds 18). From Frostburn Spirit Animal. CR +1. LA - (animals only) |
| TheLastOfTheFallen01-14-06, 11:53 AM | Half Satyr (+1) Half Nymph (+2) where did you find these templates? |
| Borris01-14-06, 05:12 PM | where did you find these templates? They can be found in Dragon Magazine #313, along with the horribly broken half-ogre and half-minotaur templates. The half-satyr and and half-nymph templates seem surprisingly well-balanced, on the other hand. |
| Lokiyn01-14-06, 05:28 PM | I'll update the main post to reflect this information. While i acknowlege the fact that having no La line or an La --- line means that the Creature is inappropriate for player characters or for Cohorts that doesn't mean they can't make useful followers. Take the Dryad for instance. The reason it is worthless as a Pc or Cohort is that it is functionally immobile, which is worthless for adventuring. However as one of many followers the Dryads usefulness as a source of information or prehaps a Hostess for a safehouse. Basically it appears that La None and La --- are mostly for creatures that are tied to a location. I'll update and divide the lists again sunday |
| FriendlyBiscuit02-13-06, 03:38 AM | Stuff! More stuff! Lots of stuff! OMG, STUFF! So you're saying that the jermlaine and the faun can indeed be followers? |
| Lokiyn02-25-06, 08:46 PM | Anything from the first code box that has an la and can be given an "ecl" can technically be used as a follower (which is fun, nothing like hoards of little rat people) The second box lists creatures that are not suitable, however a dm might allow a follower thats immobile if you have a purpose for it and can smooth talk it. 2 creatures on the other hand are listed as cohort only. And then there are templated creatures. |
| dfarnsworth02-25-06, 10:12 PM | There was an issue of Dragon (31*) that had for new PC races in it and one was a fey creature. I don't remember much and don't have my stuff with me but I do remember the favored class was rogue. The other races were a plant predessessor that was Ancient when the elves were Young", A living construct race created by gnomes, and a scaled race that looked interesting. |

You were tihnking of dragon 317, the race was Gruwaars. |
| Chanmanm802-26-06, 08:53 AM | One of you posed a Cr 25 epic fey. You forgot the other one: LeShay. They are Fey as well (man i'd love to take that as a race for a high epic campaign). |
