| cheethorne12-12-06, 09:17 AM | The most powerful fiends (for example, Pit Fiend, Balor, Molydeus) have the ability to use Blasphemy at will. My players all have a few less HD than the fiend they are facing, so when the fiend uses Blasphemy they are hit by the Dazed effect and the Weakened effect. 1) What is to stop the fiend from simply using Blasphemy every round until the everyone in the party has an Str score of 0? 2) Is there a spell or a magic item that negates or reduces ability damage? | Talisman12-12-06, 03:46 PM | 1) What is to stop the fiend from simply using Blasphemy every round until the everyone in the party has an Str score of 0? (1) nothing, (2)The GM not being a jerk, (3) the fighters and paladins up in his face carving off big chunks of him, (4) the spellcasters scorching away even bigger chunks. Really, blasphemy is overpowered. 2) Is there a spell or a magic item that negates or reduces ability damage? Restoration, of course, but it's not exactly a combat spell. Bull's strength can make it hurt less. Spell resistance (from spell resistance, holy aura, etc.) is always good. Maybe a wand of lesser restoration? Drops the casting time to a standard action and heals 1d4 ability damage. |
| dok12-12-06, 08:00 PM | Well since Blasphemy (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/blasphemy.htm) has the [ sonic ] descriptor, a Silence spell (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/silence.htm) will provide complete protection. |
| runestar12-12-06, 09:49 PM | Silence spell also ends up screwing with the party casters, so it takes away as much as it gives.:( Restoration has a casting time of 3 rounds, which rules out its use in combat. Greater spell immunity is still your best bet. 1) What is to stop the fiend from simply using Blasphemy every round until the everyone in the party has an Str score of 0? Nothing. That's the way it is supposed to be played, if it ever gets into a situation ideal to spamming blasphemy. It's probably been factored into the cr. One of the challenges of facing demons is the prospect of being subjected to repeat spammings of said SLAs. I daresay that you are expected to deal with it one way or another, which is why these demons usually get the high crs they do. |
| primemover00312-12-06, 09:53 PM | Maybe a wand of lesser restoration? Drops the casting time to a standard action and heals 1d4 ability damage. Wands don't reduce the casting time of a spell, it's a Standard action (min) or the normal casting time of the spell if greater. |
| cheethorne12-14-06, 09:12 AM | So the best cure the DM not being a especially mean to the players. Ok, that's fine. However, for the ability damage, Restoration is not the kind of effect I was looking for. I was looking for a way to negate or reduce ability damage before it is inflicted, not after the fact. Is there anyway to do this? Maybe a spell that gives someone the ability damage immunity enjoyed by the undead or an elemental or something? |
| Gnarl12-14-06, 01:40 PM | Just stay out of range with the casters. The fighters are supposed to be cannon fooder at those levels anyway. |

Ability Damage and Ability Drain immunity, nice, but the duration kinda blows. |
