| Centauri03-24-05, 04:19 PM | My party is being attacked by summoned fiendish hawks. How do these creatures attack? They're only "average" fliers and don't have the Hover feat, so they can't hover. They don't have the Fly-by Attack feat, even though that's how I would guess a hawk would attack a large ground target if it had to, slashing with its talons as it zoomed by. How do I run this? (Fortunately, it's PBEM game, so I have time to work something out.) Thanks. |
| Nuntius12803-24-05, 04:55 PM | Increase HD until they can get Fly-By or Hover? That's all I've got. |
| Helmed Horror03-24-05, 06:32 PM | they either A.) ram them and grapple w/ their talons. B.) Poke the player's eyes out. 2 common bird tatics... but it really depends on the bird's intellegence and wisdom. |

A typical hunting hawk would most likely attack with a charge. It would swoop down on its prey, at 120ft. speed and attack with a bonus. The next round (which would be nearly instantaneously) it continues flying. Now, when attacking a larger creature, the hawk would fly in (perhaps Charge, perhaps not) and claw at its opponent. The next round it would retreat (not provoking an AoO as it uses a full move) then it would swoop back in again the very next round. Remember, while combat is broken down into rounds this only to simulate the illusion of what happens. The hawk flying in and clawing its opponent's eyes would be one swift smooth motion as would it wheeling (with enough time to be attacked - the difference between having Fly-By-Attack and not) and flying off. If the hawk had fly-by attack it would attack and be gone so fast that its victim would not get an attack. |
| Centauri03-24-05, 07:39 PM | Fiendish Hawk Size/Type: Tiny Animal Hit Dice: 1d8 (4 hp) I think it's actually 1d10 because fiendish animals become magical beasts. Skills: Listen +4, Spot +16 Just +2 and +14. I believe Alertness is already factored in. Otherwise, I got the same results from the template. Thanks for the advice. |
