I'm currently building a ranger that has evil outsiders as his major favored enemy (the one he gives most of his bonuses to) I realize that that makes demons and devils the most appropriate to take his damage bonuses.

However, I was under the assumption that celestial creatures and fiendish creatures would be good and evil outsiders respectively, and was surprised to see that they were listed as magical beasts.

I understand that familiars and animal companions become magical beasts due to their link with a master or companion, but I was under the impression that (despite adding a template to an existing creature) that fiendish and celestial creatures were BORN, for lack of a better word, fiendish or celestial.

Also, in game terms, there are tons of magical beast already, and it seems like it would give a ranger who picked either good or evil outsiders a LOT more chances to use their favored enemy ability on creatures that literally could be ANY challenge rating, and it would come in handy against a lot of the summoned creatures that appear on the monster summoning spell lists.

I might move to change the type and subtype of fiendish and celestial creatures in my own gaming.
Others opinions?

thanks, and cheers

Let me begin by saying that it probably doesn't make a big difference one way or another whether you choose to make them outsiders, unless you plan on using a huge number of them in your campaign.

That said, there are supposed to be advantages and disadvantages to choosing each different favored enemy type. If a player chooses evil outsiders, he should know that he's specializing in a type of monster that is not very common at lower levels (even though there are a number of low-level fiends in the MM, BoVD, and FF, among others).

If you decide to start throwing a ton of outsiders at the party, the ranger will suddenly have a big advantage over the other characters. Whether that's something you want is up to you.
