Nicknamed by many the “masters of death”, the Tonberry is a very cunning and some say, insane creature that lives only to eradicate. They have a morbid fascination with death and can usually be seen fingering their special crafted daggers that they use to inflict horrible pain on their prey. A Tonberry is a small humanoid creature that dwells in boggy or marshy areas. It stands about 3 and a half feet tall and moves at a slower pace than other creatures. Its skin is a greenish color and its eyes are dull yellow with no pupils. Protruding from between its legs, the Tonberry has a tail like that of a fish. It can always be seen holding a small serrated dagger in one hand, and a ominous, glowing lantern in the other. A Tonberry speaks common and aquatic and typically weights anywhere from 45 to 80 pounds. A Tonberry’s special attacks are as follows… Chef’s Knife: A Tonberry, upon becoming an adult, acquires a special dagger that has been enchanted by the most vile of powers. Some say they bathe the blade in the blood of human infants, other say that they offer sacrifices to dark deities. Whatever the reason, these knifes are no ordinary blades. Upon being stabbed by one of these macabre tools, any living thing then feels his soul shriek out in despair. They then must succeed at a fortitude save (DC 16) or be struck dead. This effect is a supernatural ability. This knife only function in the hands of a Tonberry. In the hands of anyone else, it functions as a +1 dagger. Everyone’s Grudge: A Tonberry has an invisible aura surrounding him that allows him to absorb the pain and torments of his wounds and channel that power into a finely tuned conduct of energy channeled into his blade. Once per day, a Tonberry can channel all the damage he has taken into his blade. If the Tonberry’s next hit succeeds, he is able to deal extra damage according to how much damage he has taken earlier. For example, the Tonberry takes 21 points of damage earlier in combat, during his next turn, he chooses to channel that power into his blade and if on a successful hit, he will deal an extra 21 points of damage. This effect is a supernatural ability A Tonberry’s special qualities are as follows… Damage Reduction: A Tonberry has damage reduction of 20/+3, only +3 or better weapons can harm it, and magic of course. Immunities: A Tonberry is immune to all spells that cause instant death effects. This is a extraordinary ability Tonberry’s Lantern: A Tonberry usually carries a special enchanted lantern with him. Three times per day, he may use this lantern to cast the spell Daylight as cast by a 3rd level caster. This lantern only works in the hands of a Tonberry, in the hands of anyone else, it functions as a normal lantern. *any comments/criticism/compliments will be appriciated |
| Shayde06-19-03, 11:01 AM | Pretty good, since it has +3 damage reduction, I think it needs some spell resistance as well. |
| Ravenstein06-19-03, 12:42 PM | Weren't the Tonberries immune to just about every status effect as well? Though I never thought of them as totally vile and evil. I always thought of them as out of work gourmet chefs who liked to hang out in the dungeons of big boss-type monsters. |
| (Psi)SeveredHead06-19-03, 01:07 PM | Those things need way more hit points. Seriously, high-level adventurers should be afraid of them. Give them Death Ward and numerous other immunities, and so many hp that the fighter despairs of ever actually hurting it. Of course, it's so slow it can't catch them. Everyone's Grudge was a counterattack in FF8, I believe. PS the DR is pointless. Any 10th-level combatant will have a +3 weapon anyway. |
| Ravenstein06-19-03, 02:00 PM | True. I'd lower their Dex score a bit too, and put it into strength. Tonberries were never that fast but strong as all get out. An yeah, they need way more hit points than 54. "Everyone's Grudge" was a counterattack. That was how they fought back was by reflecting the damage. Then when they got up to you, they'd hit you with one massive attack. Least that's how I basically remember them. Been awhile since I played FF8, don't remember them from 9 or 10, but they were in there somewhere. |
| (Psi)SeveredHead06-19-03, 02:16 PM | I just looked at the save DC of the Chef's Knife. Considering the trouble that a tonberry has to go to to catch the players, it should have a higher save DC. Against 11th-level characters you're looking at save DC 18-21 or so (21 for my players, since they just love those cloaks of resistance). |
| DarkSoldier06-19-03, 05:16 PM | Are you going to have King Tonberry, the big Tonberry with a little crown spinning above its head, but still carrying a normal Tonberry's knife and lantern? |
| The Dusty Dustman06-19-03, 06:37 PM | Thanks for the comments people, I will be sure to change some of my mistakes around and edit it when finished. |
| Carefree Butterfly*06-20-03, 10:57 AM | Heh, cute. Nice job. |

To do that, I would suggest raising its HD to 15 or 20 or more. The raise the Con high about 18-20+. He already has immune to death. I beleive tonberrys where immune to paralyzation, sleep. SR would help it survive those annoying spell attacks. I would give it acuatic subtype, since it can speak aquatic it seems to fit. Also dont forget a swim speed. Lets see those bold adveturers get surprised when they thought they escaped in the water when its right behind them. Why would DR be pointless? I see what you mean but the monster fends of other monsters as well not just PCs. Any DR is good no matter how low. Its better to have some protection than non at all. |
