Alignment: Always Neutral Treasure: None Advancement:7-14hd(fine) Aside from a three faintly glowing streaks on its abdomen colored red, green, and blue, a Neptlon looks like an ordinary spider. Neptlons are a race of very powerful magical creatures with comparitively tiny bodies. They also possess amazing physical endurance from a creature so small, and a complex and strange form of musculature grants them a strength greater than most humans. The most common mistake a person makes, whether intentionally or accidentally, is stepping on a neptlon. While this generally does the creature little or no harm, it provokes the minute monster into utilizing its magical powers upon the offender. Many powerful mages seek neptlon's as familiars, but so far none have been successful. Netplons are very rare, and it takes a knowledge(nature) check dc:26 to differentiate a normal spider from a Neptlon. A knowledge(nature) check dc:21 provides vague warnings about harming spiders unprovoked, both large and small. Neptlons do not speak, though they may be communicated with by means that allow a person to talk with spiders and spider-like creatures. combat: Neptlons are simple creatures, binding enemies with web and assaulting them with spell-like abilities as they patiently skitter towards the offender. Poison(ex): Initial damage 2str, secondary damage 1d12 con, fortitude save dc:17. A creature that successfully saves against this poison is immune to it for the rest of the day. Spell-Like Abilities(sp): At will acid splash, detect poison, four times per day: web, magic missile, shatter, telekinesis, melf's acid arrow, once per day: lighting bolt, hold person, rainbow pattern, ice storm, bestow curse. Caster level 6, save dc charisma based. |
| Norhg07-10-05, 10:25 PM | At level 6 I could see one of these eat a whole party all by itself! Rogue- oww, something bit me. 10 rounds later. 1d12 con damage. 1 round after that 1d12 more con damage. Had this critter been intelligent it would have been a whole other case. Something that makes me wonder is how it can have such a low "move silently". Makes no sense... at all... But still, cr is good. As soon as the party knows it is there it is no problem. If you are going to have it hang from the ceiling dropping first lightningbolt then itself I would up the cr by one or two. Retro cr? See how they fare before giving it? Seems good to me. It is dead in a grapple though... |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.07-10-05, 11:57 PM | I added a clause in the venom to keep it from silently killing off too much, since that isn't my main intention. Most of the time the creature only attacks when provoked, like somebody steps on it. Even though it's really small, it's got a load of hp, damage reduction, and a high AC, so I was worried about the ramifications of that. This is not just an easy kill once you see it. Sometimes the party might provoke it without being aware of it, or at least recognizing it as a threat. Just another stomped bug. |

| R.M.G.C.L.F.05-26-06, 05:56 PM | :bump: |
| FatMonkey1305-26-06, 07:32 PM | It seems like it is very likely to kill any thing it hits (average damage from poison is 13 con, a con 10 pc with 6 levels w/ good will saves result is 40% chance he dies, bad save and you end up dead a lot more) AC result in less then 50% chance of being hit HP is pretty high But now that I think of it... It seems that it is not that more powerful then a level 6 cleric w/ the spell Poison... And the low speed means that it will not run around killing people left and right so... CR of Six seems fine to me... but that is one nasty critter |
| Thiez05-27-06, 06:52 PM | This monster has an aura of strong Brokenation. Try page 296 of the Monster Manual. Your critter has way too much strength, it should be 1 and its bite should be about 1d damage. It should have a maximum of 2 HD. Like; HD 2d8 (9 hp) Initiative: +8 Speed: 5ft. climb 5ft. AC: 27 (+8 size, +8 dex, +1 natural), touch 26, flat footed 19 Bab/Grapple: +2/-21 Attack: Bite +16 melee (1 plus poison) Full Attack: Bite +16 melee (1 plus poison) Saves: Fort +3, Ref +11, Will +2 Abilities: Str 1, Dex 27, Con 11, Int 2, Wis 14, Cha 16 Also, DR 10/+2? I smell un-3.5-ish damage reduction. There is but one possible exception to the size/hd/abilities rules, and that would be the Killer Bunny. This spider sucks :) |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.05-27-06, 09:19 PM | People seem to be acting under the mistaken apprehension that this creature has initial and secondary poison damage of 1d12 con. It has initial 2str, secondary 1d12con. Initial and secondary are not always the same. I'm rather attached to a poison that theoretically can kill you, even though this is a 50% chance at most assuming you fail the save. I still might lower it to 8 or 2d4, but I think people are focusing too much on the poison. Theiz: The "rules" in the monster manual's section on creation are guidelines for beginners at most. A creature has more than a 1d1 damage for its bite if it's mandibles are particularly large and sharp. The description text clearly explains how a magical fine-sized spider can have such great strength. Yes, it is very un-3.5ish damage reduction. That's because 3.5 damage reduction is silly. A creature is only "broken" if its too powerful for its CR. You have said nothing that relates to challenge rating, only irrational size guidelines. Your comments are irritating and in no way helpful. If you have something relating to the flavor of the creature or its power level in relation to the challenge rating, say so. Otherwise you're just spamming up my thread. |
| Thiez05-28-06, 08:35 AM | Spamming? I'm not the one who keeps saying 'bump'... Anyway how is a creature with an intelligence of 2 EVER going to use a lightning bolt, curse or ice storm? I imagine these dumb creatures using their ice storm each time they see a fly. I am not in favor of poison working only once per day, you could just give the poison weaker effects and treat it as normal, infinite-use-per-day poison. Anyway, I dont like the spider in the same way that I don't like goggles of bull's strength; both of 'em make no sense. -Watch out! That spider there! -What about it? 'Steps on spider' [BOOM, ICE STORM, LIGHTNING BOLT, CURSE CURSE CURSE, RAINBOW PATTERN, TELEKINESIS] Duh? Anyway, what happens if you step on one? With +1 natural armor, I'd say instakill, but the creature has 66hp :S |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.05-28-06, 11:25 AM | Did I say anything about poison working once per day? No, I did not. It only deals con damage once per use. As for the powers, it has those because it is a magical spider, a spider-shaped mystical being with access to a dazzling well of arcane energies. Like I said, it's hardy. Such is possible. There are beetles that get run over by all-terrain-vehicles and then nonchalantly crawl up out of the sand. Please leave my thread and never return. |
| Thiez05-28-06, 12:00 PM | A creature that successfully saves against this poison is immune to it for the rest of the day. That's what I meant. Now, I'll be off, so you can get back to bumping this pathetic thread. |
