Fire Elemental vs. fire hose?????? [Archive] - Wizards Community

Larger Fire Elementals have DR and are vulnerable to Cold based attacks. Similarly it says in the description that, “A body of water is an impassable barrier unless the fire elemental can jump or pass over it.” So it seems to hint that fire elementals have an aversion to water.

So here are some questions for thought:
A fire elemental with DR comes under assault by a character brandishing a Decanter of Endless water (essentially a fire hose.) The Decanter spits forth 30 gallons of water per round in a 20 foot long stream 1 foot wide and deals 1d4 points of damage based on pressure (I assume bludgeoning.) What happens?

A fire elemental is knocked off a ledge into a 20 foot deep pool of water – essentially submerged. What happens? Will it just sit stupidly at the bottom of the pool since it can’t cross a ‘barrier of water’?

It seems kind of silly that a fire elemental is immune to the effects when assaulted by an overwhelming amount of water.

What do you guys think? :confused:

i imagine that if a fire elemental ends up inside water... it goes out.

Edit: i would rule that a decanter would do a little extra damage...

"Water-Dominant: Planes with this trait are mostly liquid. Visitors who can’t breathe water or reach a pocket of air will likely drown. Creatures of the fire subtype are extremely uncomfortable on water-dominant planes. Those made of fire take 1d10 points of damage each round." (From the SRD)

I would say the decanter does at least 1d6 damage a round, and a Fire Elemental submerged or significantly in water takes 1d10 damage every round.

If the water was especially cold (near freezing), then I'd add some more damage, but not double it (a Fire Elemental that was frozen inside ice would take double damage every round, however).

Treat the water as acid.
There are rules for being sprayed in acid, and what happens when you are submersed in it.

This makes a lot of sense since the decanter is probably just a small gate to the elemental plane of water.

However a firehose works as efficiently as it does because it saturates the burning material with water thereby taking away the fuel for the fire.
A fire elemental gets its fuel from the magic rift between the planes (I think) and therefore would not be put out as easily as an independent flame of the same size, but it takes damage no question about that.

Not always. I remember reading about some firefighter training. They had a controlled burn of a room. After the instructor was done using it as an illustration he turned on his hose (they were in the room at the time) and the fire promptly went out even though he didn't hose it down. The fire turned enough water to steam that it deprived the fire of oxygen.

I do agree with the previous assessment that the water should be treated as acid in regard to fire elementals. It would be hurt, it wouldn't go out in a couple of seconds like a real fire would when hit with a firehose. (And the comparison is good--the decanter spits water similar to what a secondary firehose does.)
