i thought about it for a while, and i think i have come to an understanding of how painfull having your flesh teared even for the greatest fighter. this is why i raise this proposel (not a native, don't know how to write the word):

have the flesh tearing ability deal precentage damage. this way, the attack will be equaly painful to every character. i think it will make the attack more reasonable, even on the expense of undoubtfully raising the the CR a little for these monsters. of course, there has to be a minimum damage dealt, so a level 1 wizard will still die from this attack, as he should.

any thoughts?

What monsters could do this? And what exactly do you mean by percentage damage? A 1d100 roll?

Is this perhaps referring to the Rend ability of some monsters where they latch onto an opponent and tear its flesh?

Interesting idea on the percentage, but D&D allows for extraordinary characters to practically shrug off otherwise lethal attacks. You'd think that a bite from a tyrannosaurus would maul any Medium creature, but a 20th-level fighter won't even be worried.

Making it a percentage also doesn't work in cases where the monster is of unusual size. For example, it may seem okay for a Large creature to deal percentage-based damage to a Medium creature, but what happens when it attacks a creature 50-feet tall and still damages it for a percentage of its (usually massive) Hit Point total?
