I thought I had read somewhere that you can't fly if you are above ligth encumberence (this is in reference to creatures that fly not the spell) howver, I now cannot find it. I ask because my druid has a dire bat animal companion and I want to ride it but I thought I had read somewhere you can't fly with above light encumberence. But maybe my mind is just going. So anyone know whether I can or cannot ride my dire bat with it having moderate encumberence?

You can only fly with a light load. Any kind of encumberance means you cannot fly.
I'm having a bit of trouble finding it in the rule books too...I know its there, its just finding it.

Nope.

Exactly. You can find it in the MM glossary under Movement Modes

"Fly: A creature with a fly speed can move through the air at the indicated speed if carrying no more than a light load; see Carrying Capacity, pg 162 (PHB)..."

So a Dire Bat can only carry 86 lbs or less. Depending on the level of the Druid, the Dire Bat could have a higher STR score. You could always give it a collar of giant strength to enable it to be able to carry your druid.

Another option is to see about getting and training a Desmodu War Bat (MM II, pg 66). They are bred as mounts and beasts of burden. They have a STR of 25 so their light load max is 266.

I'll rattle off a rule that I *KNOW* is correct. Somebody will ask for a page number, and sometimes, I'll be damned if the books aren't re-writing themselves when I'm not looking just so I can't find the exact page referance to it.

You know, like when you walk by something every day that you can remember, until you need it, then you can't find it to save your life. Man I hate that... :D

It was in 3.0 that a creature could fly with a medium load.

In 3.0 they kept waffling back and forth on the issue. I'm glad that the writers have apparently finally decided to go in a single direction now.

Also, flyers ARE allowed to wear medium or heavy armor while flying, provided it doesn't go over their weight limit and that it doesn't reduce their fly speed to below the minium forward movement for their maneuverability level.
