One of my players a gnomish wizard wants to buy a flying mount of some kinds.
I have no idea what would be suitable or what it would cost. Does anyone have some suggestions?

Since the wizard has no ranks in handle animal I'd prefer a carnivore of some kind...

How about a giant owl?

Training A Giant Owl

Although intelligent, a giant owl requires training before it can bear a rider in combat. To be trained, a giant owl must have a friendly attitude toward the trainer (this can be achieved through a successful Diplomacy check). Training a friendly giant owl requires six weeks of work and a DC 25 Handle Animal check. Riding a giant owl requires an exotic saddle. A giant owl can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

Giant owl eggs are worth 2,500 gp apiece on the open market, while chicks are worth 4,000 gp each. Professional trainers charge 1,000 gp to rear or train a giant owl.

you could try for a dog (or anything elce that a gmome can ride) with the winged template.

You could use a pteranodon if you want a primordial mount.

A condor would probably be big enough for a gnome to ride; hell, it is likely that the small races would have bred a bigger breed of them specifically to use as mounts.

If not, a dire bat should do the trick.

D'OH! How could I have forgotten this? There's a great creature for it. A dire hawk is the perfect size for a small creature's mount.

Now all I've got to do is set a price for a fully trained animal.
seven thousand should do it.

Probably not as flashy (or healthy!) as the other posters, but a Medium (2HD) Eagle could act as a Small Creature's mount...or if your Small PC is a Necromancer and/or Evil, a Medium Eagle Zombie would fit the bill, since it would respond to basic commands and not need any upkeep beyond the Gentle Repose spell every few days.

If that's no good (Living Animal mount for someone with nothing in 'Handle Animal', let the Gnome figure out a way (Polymorph Any Object springs to mind) to turn a average corpse into something else, say a Medium White Dragon Zombie. Flight, decent land and swim speeds and a burrow speed as well...four-in-one mount, and you could hollow out the innards and place a metal 'egg' inside....my Necromancer did this to a Large White Dragon, spell-stitched it on of that and enchanted the 'egg' inside the dragon so he could 'see' out of the Egg, and hollowed out Zombie Dragon, as per the Prying Eyes spell....total cover and a Weak 1d4 Supernature Cold Cone attack and a flying mount...just, as always, apply Gentle Repose like there's no tomorrow....stinky gnomes will take diplomacy penalties....besides it'll look cooler if it's 'intact'.
