| grimwarden11-29-04, 04:13 AM | Hello, got a little question : i.e. the Beholder's entry for speed says : 5ft. (one square), fly 20ft. (Good) ok he/she/it can crawl or bounce 5ft. per round or he can fly 20ft. ... but can he fly faster than that ? Can he "run" ? What happend : A poor beholder, his rays reach 150ft., a longbow has a normal reach of 100ft. or 200ft. taking a -2 ... and an standard PC with a longbow can move his 30ft. and shoot ... see my problem... I forgot to build some cover for my poor flying target :-( so can he go faster to close on the PC ? looked up in the MM, FAQ and around here in the Forum but didn't something. thnx |
| obrysii11-29-04, 08:51 PM | since it is natural flight, it can go up to x4 that speed, or x5 with the Run feat. It could, for some odd reason, have levels in monk or barbarian, and I, as a DM, would rule it's fly speed would increase. It could also have that spell in Savage Speices or the Draconomicon that increases flight speed by 30'. |
| Nuntius12811-29-04, 11:18 PM | The DMG says specifically that effects that increase base movement speed don't increase flight speed. Though, I'm sure someone could make a feat to bend that rule. |
| obrysii11-30-04, 08:59 PM | I'm used to 3.0, probably changed in 3.5 (as pretty much everything involving speed enhancements did). |
| Nuntius12812-01-04, 05:10 PM | Yeah. I know. 3.5 makes more sense, but they made so many things impossible without house rules. |
| grimwarden12-01-04, 07:39 PM | found kina solution DMG 3.5 pg.20 : Moving in three dimensions quote : "... A shark, even though it moves by swimming, can take a run action to swim faster. A character under the influence of a fly spell can make a flying charge. ... Use the movement rules to apply to any sort of movement, not just when traveling across flat surface." So I think a Beholder can increase his base flying speed of 20ft. to nice 80ft. running... aiming his rays will be more difficult, and I would reduce the number of usable rays...but : run little kittens :-) And if this doesn't help, I think I will find a friendly caster to haste my poor beholder. Overlooked the passage in the DMG before, sorry for bothering you and thnx for the help. |
