| speeblefreak03-25-06, 08:00 PM | I'm putting together stats for the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse for my campaign, and I'm trying to decide what I should use as the bases for Famine and Pestilence. I'm shooting for CR 16 creatures (if they're too weak, I can bump them up with templates), and I'm currently looking at a hullathoin (FF) for Pestilence and an angel of decay (LM) for Famine. Does anyone have any better ideas? |
| Dracomortis03-25-06, 08:30 PM | Well, what did you use for war and death? I'd say you could probably use the same base creature for all four horsemen and just adjust them with templates. If you want to use seperate creatures, however, angel of decay sounds good for pestilence. As for famine, perhaps a ghoul or famine spirit would be more appropriate than the hullathoin (I'm assuming it's the big undead dragon, since I can't remember for sure; if not, I could be wrong). |
| Raymond_Luxury_Yacht03-25-06, 08:44 PM | You could use the marrash from MMII for Pestilence. They even have the bow. |

I used a pumped-up ragewalker for War and a pumped-up soul reaper (Tome of Horrors III) for Death. Famine spirit's a good idea, but CR 19 is too strong. Oh, and it was Hullathoin for Pestilence and Angel for Famine. Hullathoin is the big undead dragon. You could use the marrash from MMII for Pestilence. They even have the bow. Marrash, hmm? ...Not bad. With a bunch of levels in plaguelord or cancer mage, not bad at all. :) |
| dok03-26-06, 01:42 AM | You could use the Famine Spirit from MMII. Alternatively, I made a variant Famine Spirit because I found the MMII version to be badly made and horribly underpowered for its CR. http://www.wizards.com/dnd/images/mm2_gallery/tn_88268_620_48.jpg Famine Spirit Medium Undead Hit Dice: 32d12+96 (282) Initiative: +4 Speed: 60' AC: 18 (+8 natural), touch 10, flat-footed 18 BAB/Grapple: +16/+27 Attack: Bite +19 (4d6+3/19-20/vorpal) Full Attack: Bite +19 (4d6+3/19-20/vorpal) and 2 claws +17 (1d6+1) Face/Reach: 5'/'5 Special Attacks: Aura of hunger, vorpal bite, Oversized Maw, Sharp Teeth. Special Qualities: DR 15/slashing or piercing, Ethereal Jaunt, Fast healing 10, scent, see invisibility, undead traits, Powerful Build, Girth Saves: +10 Fort, +10 Reflex, +20 Will Abilities: S 16, D 11, C -, I 14, W 15, Ch 15 Skills: Balance +35, Climb +38, Jump +50, Listen +37, Search +37, Spot +37 Feats: Blindfight, Cleave, Combat Expertise, Great Cleave, Improved Critical (bite), Improved Grapple (B), Improved Initiative, Improved Natural Attack (bite), Improved Sunder, Improved Trip, Multiattack, Power Attack. Environment: any Organization: Solitary, pair, or pack (1-3, plus 7-12 ghasts and 12-22 ghouls) CR: 15 Treasure: none Alignment: any evil Advancement: 33-64 HD (Medium) The famine spirit is a grossly obese humanoid/monstrous humanoid with a mouth full of razor-sharp teeth. Famine Spirits are said to be created from mortals with terrible avarice, & greed. Others say Famine Spirits come from those who die in terrible poverty, hunger, and unfulfilled wants. (Still others claim that either Orcus or the Devil Prince Mammon had a hand in these creatures' creation...) Aura of Hunger(Su): All living creatures within a 60' radius emanation from the Famine Spirit must roll a Will saving throw (DC 28) or suffer a –4 penalty on attack rolls, saves, ability checks, and skill checks. Additionally, all living creatures within the area must also roll a Fortitude saving throw (DC 28) or become exhausted. Characters who successfully make their saving throws are immune to the effects for 24 hours; The effects of a failed saving throw persist for one hour, but can also be removed by a heal spell. The DC is Charisma-based. Create Spawn(Su): Normally, the Famine Spirit eats creatures it kills. The Famine Spirit can completely devour the remains of a Medium-sized creature in one minute. Any humanoid creatures killed by the Famine Spirit who are not eaten will rise in 24 hours as either ghouls, (if they possessed 3 HD or less) ghasts, (if they had 4-8 HD) or Famine Spirits. (if they had 9 or more hit dice) Ethereal Jaunt (Sp): 3/day, as per the spell, Caster Level 20. See Invisibility (Sp): as per the spell, always active. Caster level 20. Powerful Build(Ex): for purposes of grapples, trips, bull rushes, sunders & disarms, as well as determining what weapons the creature can use, the Famine Spirit is treated as one size larger than it actually is. Oversized Maw(Ex): The famine spirit can open its mouth to seemingly unreal sizes. As a result, its bite attack is treated as belonging to a creature two sizes larger for purposes of damage & Sunder attempts. This stacks with Powerful Build; thus, when attempting to Sunder with a Bite, modify the attempt as if the Famine Spirit was Gargantuan. Vorpal Bite(Su): On an attack roll of 'natural 20', followed by a successful roll to confirm the critical hit, the famine spirit's bite attack severs the head of a Large or smaller opponent. Furthermore, if the Famine Spirit begins a round with an opponent pinned, they may automatically sever the head with a standard action. Sharp Teeth (Ex): When attempting a Sunder action with a bite, the targeted object's hardness is halved. Girth(Ex): Because of its gross obesity, the famine spirit gains +3 hit points per hit die. |
| TheNegaDruid03-26-06, 01:53 AM | Death: Entropic Reaper(Libris) Epic Death: Winter Wight(Epic Level Handbook) Famine: Famine Spirit.(See Above) Possibly use some Crawling Head mechanics or make it a Paragon for Epic. Pestilence: Hullathoin is a perfect Pestilence, in my opinion. Good choice. As for epic... make it a Paragon. War: Deathbringers make for good Warriors. I believe they're also Libris Mortis. Paragoning them or using a Death Knight template is a good way to make an Epic War. Good luck! |
| SinisterSeraph03-26-06, 09:52 AM | As a side note, in the Discworld novels there was actually a fifth Horseman named Chaos. As an homage to the Beatles original drummer, Chaos left the group "before they hit it big". He works as a milkman now. On topic, The Marrash and Famine Spirit seem like really good suggestions, especially with some added templates. What are your plans for the Horsemen's mounts? |
| tryco03-26-06, 10:08 AM | what about a soul eater (BoVD) for death. |
| speeblefreak03-26-06, 11:35 AM | Nice FS remake, dok! I'll definitely be using that for Famine. Just one question--why does it get Ethereal Jaunt? What are your plans for the Horsemen's mounts? I have a set of Four Horsemen templates (including a phantom mount ability) I'm applying to get the final creatures, but I still wanted appropriate base creatures. Deathbringers make for good Warriors. I believe they're also Libris Mortis. MM2, actually, but my current War stats are perfect. |
| dok03-26-06, 12:14 PM | Nice FS remake, dok! I'll definitely be using that for Famine. Just one question--why does it get Ethereal Jaunt? Well, you'd have to ask the original creators. I tried not to change too much, and the original creature had it as an SLA. One motive might be to allow it to be able to enter locked & guarded warehouses of food and storage. Another is that high CR creatures need alternate mobility options. I figured it would work well for your needs. Class levels should stack nicely onto it. With the Elite array, most classess will fit well. |

Everyone except Pestilence now has full statistics. Given people's feedback, it sounds as though I'll be going with the hullathoin. EDIT: Everyone now has full statistics. They're intended to be a boss fight, but I still don't envy the PCs. Pestilence could force 27 Fortitude saves from one person in a single round! Thanks to all, and especially dok. |
| Malus Black03-26-06, 02:22 PM | The document titled New Ravenloft Monsters here (http://www.fraternityofshadows.com/Library.html) might be of some help, as it includes three of the horsemen. |
| Romulus LoneWolf03-26-06, 06:37 PM | The Advanced Beastiary from Green Ronin Games actually has templates for all Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, which can then be added to whatever creature you want.. |

| Freefall03-26-06, 07:57 PM | As a side note, in the Discworld novels there was actually a fifth Horseman named Chaos. And in the Bible there is a Horseman named Conquest, with a crown and a bow. But Pestilence is completely absent. I've always kind of wondered where he came from. Anyway, granted it's your campaign, but a Hallathoin seems a little odd. It's an enormous, quadrupedal, draconic beast. It just doesn't feel like a "Horseman" to me as it isn't even vaguely humanoid nor capable of riding any kind of mount. I wish I had the Book of Fiends handy - I bet there's something good in there - but I don't, and with the resources at hand, the thing that seems most "pestilential" to me would actually be a Cancer Mage. Then you would just need an aesthetically appealing base creature to have the class levels. Maybe a Worm that Walks (they don't seem to be that powerful a template, and you could always tone it down if it seems like it is). |

But now that you mention it, I do have the Book of Fiends, and I haven't checked it yet. Bah! Mehrim and Nergal are too strong. But there's still the plaguelord.... |

I've always kind of wondered where he came from. Translations are iffy on the First Horseman. He may represent Conquest, and he may represent Pestilience. Recall that the only one who is explicitly named is Death. All the rest are assumptions. |
| Rocketboy1303-27-06, 12:44 PM | The various god aspects that apear in the Minatures handbook might be helpful. War- Aspect of Bane, Hextor, or Kord Death- Aspect of Nerull Pestilence- Another Aspect of Nerull, but with a diferent weapon and an aura of disease/naseua/constitution darining Famine- the Famine Spirit modified above looks rather good To add to the number of fictional Horsemen, Piers anthony reveled several in his incarnations of Immortality series. War and Death were the central members, but famine, pestilence, Conquest, and one other was present (his name escapes me at this time unfortunatly) |

| BeyondFated03-27-06, 09:41 PM | I've also heard of a False Prophet as the Fifth horseman. Although I much prefer 4 to 5, myself. |

| MrAdam03-28-06, 11:15 AM | I know it's alrady been said but, it bears repeating. Green Ronin's Awe-Inspiring Adavanced Bestiary (A book which I swear by) has a four horseman template, so You can make virtually anything a horseman of...whatever (the apokalypse, doom, death, fluffy kittens ect.) And not Just Famine, Plague,War and Death 'niether (Doom, Rage, Cheese, Kidney Stones, Horribly Painfull kanker sores and hangnails ect. and who said there only had to be four of them AND who says they have to ride horses!?, HA ,not me baby!! In my game there are the 12 yaksmen of doom!!) |

| Poh_Tah_Toe03-28-06, 03:35 PM | I think one of the horsemen was the false prophet, pretty sure it is war... Ah i was wrong, apparently it is pestilence. Wiki: Also, pestilence may be said to "conquer" the body, particularly viral disease. Sounds like cancer mage, or those cist things in BoVD, so that could help when determining classes. And just for reference Pestilence/Antichrist: White horse War: Red horse Famine: Black horse Death: Sickly pale horse... I think it would be cool to add that undead template to it from libris mortis that you can do with familiars, although I'm not sure if it works on mounts |
| dok06-11-06, 11:27 PM | Since someone else was asking about Four Horsemen, it's easier to post a reply to this thread & ressurect it than not. |
| Kadasbrass06-12-06, 04:16 PM | There has been some debate over the one known as Pestilence. The passage of the bible only names the horsemen of death. One has the power to take peace away, a second has the power to conquer, the the third seems to incur unfair trade or famime. I thought about using the four horsemen and was going to replace Pestilence with Fear (the ability to conquer people) as they did in a very old storyline for Judge Dredd. I was just going to use a high level human, but was going to combine some of the features of the Hexblade and Duskblade into a single monster, and add in a Aura of Fear (like the symbol, but all craetures within 30 ft). With Famine I was just going to creature a whole new creature. I was going to cross some of the abilities of the Lich and Mummy Templates and applie them to either NE elf druid, or a custum monster with spell-like abilities. Was going to give it an Aura of Pain (like the symbol), and give it a touch that does str and or con damage plus some regular damage that gives Famine temp HP as the Vampiric touch spell. If you know someone with a copy, the d20 Apocalypse book has stats for the Four Horsemen, their outsiders. |
