Hey!

A player in my campaign (playing an urban ranger) has expressed the desire to acquire a fox as his animal companion when he gets one.

Basically, I'm trying to figure out how to stat one up.

At first, I thought of altering the wolf slightly, but I think foxes would be small rather than medium...

So now I'm thinking of some sort of adjusted dog. Possibly higher dex, that sort of thing.

Unfortunately, I suck at this sort of thing, so... any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's done somewhere.... Have to look around for a while.

There are official statistics for an arctic fox in Frostburn.

There are official statistics for an arctic fox in Frostburn. And from there, you'd just change a few small things.

And from there, you'd just change a few small things.

And the only thing that needs changing in this case is the kind of terrain in which it gains a racial bonus to Hide checks.

If you didn't have access to Frostburn, the statistics for a (non-riding) dog would serve pretty well if you applied a similar Hide bonus.

My familar's a fox, but my computer's down right now.

As a familiar, they provide +2 INT. I forget what stats my DM gave them...I have an enhanced fox I slapped together for his super version when I get Improved Familar, but otherwise I can't help ya. I'll email him and see what I can do.

Is this from a book, or just a houserule?I'm pretty sure (I hope, at least...) that that is a house rule. I have never seen anything about it mentioned on the CO board, and I can guarantee that it would be, if it were in an official book. :D

The Artic Fox is listed as a Familiar (With a move Silently bonus). Personally, I'd consider giving them two extra HD and let them be an Animal Companion.

That sounds a bit more powerful than most familiar benefits.Yet still so far from being worthwhile.

Yet still so far from being worthwhile.Well, random +2 bonuses to your key ability are nothing to sneeze at. The benefits conferred exceed those of some feats. Given some of the handy familiar-replacing expanded class features out there for wizards and sorcerers, I have to agree when it comes to familiar from the book. Looking forward to getting some mileage out of the "Counterfire" ability with my evoker.

Actually, I'm a Sorcerer.

I have a well-earned reputation for asshattery when playing casters, so my DM decided to give me slightly less of an excuse and a boost to my Will saves.

Need some examples? Let's see...there was Imeowtep and Fluffy the Felinian (homebrew catfolk) clerics of Bast, one of which used an aspergelium (which he called a "Holy Water Whacker," using the latter for his battlecry, and the other who used a sickle and had a disturbing habit of laughing insanely and stroking his sickle at inopportune moments.

Thanks everyone!
I think I'll just go with a hiding (non-riding) dog.
Thanks!
