Fright

A fright exist in the dream realm, but is able to occasionally manifest it's influence in the real world. A fright once it brushes with the mind of a living being is able to bring itself into being.

As you advance, you feel a cold breeze roll across you skin, you cannot help but feel your breath shorten and a cold sweat build up against your brow, as you try to compose yourself you cannot help but feel something looming over your shoulder.

Manifestation: When a fright encounters a living mind in a dreamscape it attempts to instill fear, the characters dream takes the form of a nightmare forcing the character awake, the character must make a will save DC 19, if successful the fright is incapable of further molestation. If unsuccessful the fright has a minor connection to the characters mind, it is able to attempt to frighten it's host, but otherwise has no way to affect the material realm. At any point, once per round, the fright can attempt to frighten the character, this requires a will save DC 19, if successful there is no effect, if failed the character is shaken for 1d4 rounds. Once shaken the fright can still attempt to invoke fear, if the target fails a save while shaken he becomes frightened and the Fright can fully manifest in the material plane. If a character makes 3 successful saves in a row, the fright is driven out of his mind, forced back into the dream realm. Once manifested, the fright resembles a manifestation of the characters worst fear (similar to the phantasmal killer spell).

Death Touch: Whenever the Fright makes it's slam attack, a character hit must make a will save DC 14 or is frightened to death, if successful the character takes an additional 3d6 damage instead of dying.

Engulf: As a standard Fright can move into the same square as another character of medium size or smaller, it cannot make a slam attack in the same round it engulfs. Those within the Fright must make a save vs it's death touch every round on it's turn. To escape a Fright that has engulfed a character he must make an opposed grapple check.

This creature was written using the Living Spell template, and the phantasmal killer spell with a little extra fluff thrown in.

Alright, this is slightly confusing. Can the Fright only encounter creatures in a dream, and then try to manifest itself? And can it only invade their mind in a dream? Or does it even use dreams? I'm slightly confused on that point. Overall nice idea, though.

They currently only encounter others in dreams, once the minds brush the dream becomes a nightmare forcing the character awake, at the point the fright is basically hitching a ride in the wakened characters mind.

Um, shouldn't the second sentence start off "If UNsuccessful..."? If not, I'm really confused.

Yes it should thank you for pointing that out.

Very nice flavor monster. You should really stop with all the monsters, Sleepwalker, you make the rest of us look bad.

I love it! Does the Fright Ooze have any way of re-entering the dreamscape if it slays the person who brought it into existence? Furthermore, the flavor text and crunch seem to clash; the ooze when manifested takes the form of the frightened dreamer's worst fear, but can use the phantasmal killer spell just as easily against anyone else? Overall, it seems balanced, and it's a very good idea, it reminds me of the Phantasmal Slayer creature from Heroes of Horror (which is basically an incorporeal flying Phantasmal Killer spell)

It affects all creatures as though it was a phantasmal killer, the current write up has it as the host worst fear, but one idea I had was for it to shift forms, also I wanted to make it stronger the more people it killed, probably like the red cap rules in MMIII. However until recently not much interest was shown in this creature so I wasn't up to upgrading it.

However since interest has stirred up I will be looking into improving it towards my original concept.

As to does it go back: No, once unleashed it becomes a blight to the world until stopped.

An interesting alternative to the Fihyr.
