| Khul04-18-06, 12:55 PM | Ok, here is the situation: We have Desert Landworm attacking the group. As he makes his first attack his frightful presence activates (see excerpt from Draconomicon below). One PC becomes panicked and on the next moment someone from the group casts Remove Fear, which suppreses his fear. Now, my question is: When the landworm attacks again does the previously affected PC throws new saving throw for fear (and has +4 on the check) or he is immune to the landworm's frightful presence for the duration of the spell? So is the dragon's frightful presence always active from the moment he attacks to the end of combat, or does he activates it all over again when he attacks again. Thank You. Here is the excerpt from Draconomicon: Frightful Presence (Ex): Much like the chromatic and metallic dragons, landworms can unsettle their foes with their mere presence. This ability takes effect automatically whenever the landworm attackes or charges. Etc. |

Let's look at Remove Fear (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/removeFear.htm): If the subject is under the influence of a fear effect when receiving the spell, that effect is suppressed for the duration of the spell. OK. So the effect of the Frightful Presence, triggred by the attack, is supressed. Now, my question is: When the landworm attacks again does the previously affected PC throws new saving throw for fear (and has +4 on the check) or he is immune to the landworm's frightful presence for the duration of the spell? You answered this one yourself: This ability takes effect automatically whenever the landworm attackes or charges Every time the landworm attacks, Frightful Presence triggers. Every time the Landworm charges, Frightful Presence triggers. To see how well this works, finish the rules quote: An opponent that succeeds on the saving throw is immune to that same creature’s frightful presence for 24 hours. So, our scenario looks like this: Landworm charges, triggering F.P. One of the PCs fails his save, is panicked for 1d6 rounds. Everyone else makes their saves, are immune to the Landworm's F.P. for 24 hours. PC #2 casts remove fear; the effect of the first F.P. is supressed for the duration of the spell. If the duration of the Frightful Presence effect is longer than the duration of the remove fear spell, then once the spell ends, PC #1 will still be panicked. Landworm attacks, triggering F.P. again. PC #1 has not made a successful saving throw, and so is not immune to the Landworm's F.P. and must roll a new saving throw to prevent becoming panicked by a second instance of F.P. Meanwhile, everyone else is immune to the F.P. effects of this landworm. |
