This weekend I used an advanced Darktenctacles with the deflect arrows feat to really confuse my party.

I paired an advanced Dark Tentacle (18HD) with a Clr8 of Umberlee. The party assumed the cleric was the BBG of the encounter. I had the darktentacle hidden in a pool of water near the altar. The party rushed the Clr which allowed the Dark Tentacle to grapple them.

Once they realized the real danger was the Dark Tentacle they moved away from it and tried to kill it with arrows, which with all of those tentacles it simply deflected them away.

The Wall of Force was useful, but I found the Charm/Hold spell like abilities to be worthless with a higher level party.

In the end, they rushed the DT as a group. With its low AC, the DT quickly fell to the whole party's assault.

DT disturbs me, it is a Tentacle Monster. It even has Charm Person...

That's just creepy.

I believe their is a certain Japanese ''phenoma'' that has influenced the creation of the Darktentacles!.

Giving it Deflect Arrows was a very smart move randomjack, means your players had to stop thinking tactical and safe and justy get on with the job.

I really liked the look of the DT. Having eyes instead of suction cups just adds to the creepy flavor. I put it in the temple of Umberlee so when the party entered the inner sanctum they would be greated with the creepy tentacles with eyes coming out of the well.

I used one of those wells with tentacles coming out mini's. I had been dying to use it in an encounter and it suited the purpose well.

It took the party a few rounds to adjust their tactics. Normally the front line fighters would be the only ones to engage a big beastie, but every time they got grappelled they would retreat to regroup. In the end, they just had to bum rush it, thinking that it couldn't grapple all of them at once.

The spellcasters would hurl flamestrike and fireball at it, but at 18HD it had plenty of hps to take them and wear the party out for the BBEG, which was the next encounter.

I have a side plot of my campaign is visually cthulhu influenced. Lots of tentacle creatures, used in different ways.
