| Solidcobra02-06-04, 12:02 PM | Let's face it, we love our undead, especially skeletal ones...... but how to make them EXTRA interesting? giving them that extra touch that makes the encounter fun? I mean, apart from the lv.5 Necromancer or Cleric spell "Undead Strength" (exactly as enlarge animal, except for the size increase).... how to make the undead fun? Small displacer beast zombies with 50ft speed, to recreate those jumping monkey things in House of the Dead? Doing the castlevania, a skeleton dipped in the blood of unborn babies to make them invincible (recreates self in 1d3 rounds after death, if destroyed due to turning, permanently dead)? Kamikaze Skeletons, having fire trap cast on their hollow limbs, if they die or take 6+ bludgeoning damage: BLAMMO!? give me your ideas, please..... |
| ieattrollsforbreakfast02-06-04, 12:11 PM | Step 1: Take the tarrasque Step 2: Apply Zombie or Skeleton template It speaks for itself really :D |
| lugnut7102-06-04, 12:27 PM | Back in the day I used to play Magic the Gathering. They had this card called the goblin gernade. If you have gunpowder in your world skeletons are made for this. Cheap and efficient. |

With the skeletonization/zombification you lose all the bonus con hp, the massive fortitude saves, the ray deflection, the SR, and the super-regeneration. Once dead at -30 plus a wish, now destroyed at 0. |

True, but its still a lot better than any other zombie or skeleton, with its huge strength, massive size and loads of natural attacks, dragon skeletons/zombies are the only ones that rival its power. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.02-06-04, 04:54 PM | Rather than relying upon the dead bodies you can dig up, create your own personalized undead. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=173080) |

This also forbids you from using the death tryrant beholder from the FRCS. What does commanding undead have to do with making undead monsters? Not all undead need to be made or controlled by mere mortals. All manner of supernatural processes (including direct intervention of a deity) could create/make any # of highly powerful undead. And why on earth would WOTC prevent the use of one of its own creatures (refering to the death tyrant)? That makes no sense at all. With all due respect, I think you may be confused about 1 or more aspects of undead, their creation, and/or use. Or perhaps I have missed the entire point of your post. Either way, I am confused by it. |
| kinem02-06-04, 07:38 PM | Mindless undead get no saving throw, and will fight for you once you cast this 2nd level spell which lasts 1 day/level. That is not a recipe for being able to use a high CR mindless undead as a major opponent for the PCs. Get it now? As to why they did this, I would say it has something to do with whatever is causing the low quality level of most recent WoTC products. |
| kinem02-22-04, 02:55 PM | One possible solution is this (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=186906) but it needs evaluation. |
| l3lasphemy02-22-04, 03:33 PM | I'm playing with the idea of an undead creature lobbing grenade-like skulls at a party. A Skeletal Grenader...cackling crazily and chunking skull-bombs at a party while they scramble through a large room. Boom Boom heheheeee BOOM! |

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I don't know ... seems a little too video-gamish. And where's he getting the skulls? If it's from a big pile, the PCs can get them. Which might be OK ... Maybe they are just ordinary skulls with a vial of alchemists' fire inside. If he's magically conjuring them, why do his bombs look like peoples' head bones? So ... what do people think of my bigger & better zombies (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=186906)? |
| l3lasphemy02-24-04, 03:00 AM | No, I imagined a pile of maybe 10 skulls...of non magical origin. Be it Alchem fire or ...primitive grenades or what have you. i'm not sure i agree with your 'video game' impression, and i guess thats my fault for not explaining thoroughly...but essentially it was almost a joke...but now im really considering it. But...i do believe most of D&D can be put into a video game...or we wouldnt have the RPG market in gaming down pat... So i'm not even sure if thats a bad thing or not. |
| Capn Charlie02-24-04, 03:48 AM | No, what you do is animate skulls, order them to keep their mouth shut till they hit something or you say to open up, then cast flame trap on them. Even better have them attached to a Large skelly that plucks them off his body and lobs them. I have always been a fan of undead made with multiple bodies, so this seems a prime candidate. |
