Alignment: Any Treasure: Standard coins, no goods, standard items Advancement: By character class At first glance the slorgmath't resembles a massive, tan, slug with a curving mantle, whale-like body shape, waving cluster of moth-like antennae and two long tentacles ending in dripping flat pads. The creature moves along with use of the reddish cillia that coat its underside. Some are hidden by fluctuating energy shields projected from metallic devices and some are covered in a shining armor coat. The slorgmath't are a race of highly evolved mobile fungi with intellegence on a level far higher than that of humanoids but little common sense, perception, communicative skills or spiritual power. They use large amounts of advanced technology and psychic powers to combat their foes, and are generally non-agressive towards humans unless ready to reproduce (asexually performed and refered to as "seeding") or hungry. They generally prefer dead flesh or plant matter although some have developed a taste for humanoid flesh (they consider humanoids to be wild animals with an odd variety of abilities and powers). Slorgmath't speak a very advanced variety of undercommon. Non-Slorgmath't need an intelligence check dc:14 to comprehend them. Slorgmath't appear to have more advanced forms of communcation but reserve those for creatures intellectually on par with them. Digestive Fluids(ex): Upon a successful grapple a Slorgmath't can trap a creature under its lower tentacles and secrete a digestive enzyme onto them, dealing 2d6 acid damage, 1 str damage and 1 con damage for each round the hold is maintained. Swallow Whole: Upon a second grapple check a Slorgmath't can swallow a creature. It usually only does this once the prey is dead or dying, as it has fairly weak internal digestion (1 acid damage and 1 bludgeoning each round) and it only takes 3 points of damage with a light peirce or slashing weapon to cut out, after which the stomach is ruined for a day. Psionic attack/defense mode: At will: Mind thrust/thought sheild, once per day: Empty mind. Psionics: At will: Far hand, Far punch, trinket, bolt, missive 8 per day: Combat precognition, astral construct I, attraction; 3 per day: chameleon, suggestion, combat presience, Charm beast (as charm monster but only functions on beasts, animals, magical beasts, humanoids, or monstrous humanoids of int13 or less); 2 day: Dominate plant or animal (as domination but can affect animals, plants, beasts, and humanoids), inkling 1 day: Polymorph self, Breath of the dragon, Improved fly Breath weapon(ex): Once per day, cone of stunning spores, 1d8 dex damage (reflex save dc:15 for half). Photonic Cannon(manufactured weapon): The photonic cannon is a non-magical device made from a strong light and a daimond used as a focusing crystal which eminates intense beams of light that disrupt and damage living matter. Blindsight 90ft: A slorgmath't in an area of intense foul odor (sucha as a stinking cloud) or hit with a stench attack (like a ghoul touch spell) is blinded. Acid burst(ex): Whenever a slorgmath't is hit with a peircing weapon, there is a 25% chance the weapon strikes an acid pocket that gushes forth dealing 1d4 acid damage to the weapon and the weilder. Energy sheild(manufactured equipment): Slorgmath't have a kind of small non-magical generator that radiates a field of deflective force energy, providing a +3 deflection bonus to AC. This item weighs 2 pounds and lasts for roughly six hours when activated (free action for psionic creatures, otherwise move action). Retractable silver armor(manufactered armor): When activated as a free action once per round (cannot be used in the same round as a quick draw) the minor circuitry controlling the suit of armor activates and unsheathes it to protect the wearer. This armor's interlocking foil is increadibly comfortable (light armor) and provides a maximum dexterity bonus of +4 with no armor check penalty. Alien mind(ex): A slorgmath't has a bizzare and increadibly different psyche. Phantasms, language dependant spells and patterns created by or cast by creature of less than 20int have no effect and charms from entities with over 2 charisma and more than 3 wisdom are useless against them. If I get enough comments I'll add in more info on the slormath't and more of their advanced technology. | Adrez Nesnsid11-23-03, 12:15 PM | What's their favored class? If you don't already have one in mind, I think that is should be Dave 1001's Homebrew Inventor Core Class (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=91678&highlight=inventor), considering that part of the idea behind them seems to be that they have a lot of advanced technology. Of course, they also have psychic powers, so psion would also work. Maybe you could give them a choice between the two? |
| RhoxandRoll11-23-03, 12:48 PM | Oi! You have some of the best ideas around here...:) I think you should collect them all in to one.. |
| Incenjucar11-23-03, 03:25 PM | 1) Reminds me of tinker gnomes 2) They have undercommon in the far realms? |

So you get mods of Str+4, Dex-4,Con+4,Int+16,Wis-4,Cha-4. Or did you mean level adjustment? |

| R.M.G.C.L.F.11-25-03, 07:18 PM | Cultured Brains Slorgmath't have perfected the art of growing selected parts of the nervous system. They usually grow independent brains with only one mental ability score, either intelligence(calculators), or wisdom(observers). They have yet to find a method for creating brains with charisma. Some brains are even imbued with a psionic power. Most brains are kept in special carrying cases that allow them to connect to the nervous system of another creature, combining their mental capacity with that of their wearer to increase effective ability scores by their own total. Some also have psionic powers or knowledge ranks imbued in them. The brains are useless to the Slorgmath'ts themselves who being fungi lack a true nervous system (although having an equally adequate substitute) and are unable to interphase with them. They mainly use the brains in trade, particularly with good or neutral aligned ithillids and other brain-devouring creatures. Strangely enough Neh-Thalggu (aka Brain Collectors) are not interested in the brains developed by the Slorgath't. Common Brain Items: Headband of information: This headband is lined with tiny metal dots on the inside each ending in a very thin needle which is used to "hook up" to the wearer. At the front of the band is a tranparent liquid-filled dome housing a brain the size of a large grape, giving +1 synergy bonus to int and knowledge(arcana) checks. Cheater's Pen: This small writing implement needs only to be dipped into ink to intake enough ink to fill 500 pages. In addition it contains a tiny grape-sized brain on top in a clear dome, attached by a thin sheet of metal connected on the inside to two small silver bumps. When held it grants a +2 synergy bonus to knowledge checks of a specific kind. The most common are knowledge(history) and knowledge (arcana). This pen gets its name from it is often used on tests in schools of magic and ancient lore due to the fact that it's enhancing nature cannot be revealed by detect magic or even detect psionics. Gloves of mental hands These two aluminum-coated gloves each contain a brain slightly smaller than a fist and have two needles at the back of the hand. The left brain activates the power far hand and the right activates the power far punch, usable 3 times per day. Each brain has an intelligence score of 10, but is unable to exchange data with the wearer except when commanded to activate the power. |

| R.M.G.C.L.F.02-11-04, 10:01 PM | Guardian spiders are eight-legged structures dominated by a metal disk of 2 inches in thickness and 1 foot in diameter. At the front of this disk is a pair of serrated blades, at the back is a variety of plugs and outlets. On the top of the disk there is a black, shining, dome containing an observer brain. The dome allows the brain to recharge itself by absorbing solar power. It takes only 1 hour of charging per day. | Sildatorak08-17-04, 02:05 AM | Fungus creatures from beyond space that have brains in jars? Have you been reading The Whisperer In The Darkness by any chance? I think that is the right story, at least. If you want to play with pseudonaturals and haven't read that, you should. The Far Realm sounds a lot like H.P. Lovecraft's work about beings of ineffible horror living behind the space we perceive. |
| Khaibit_Ema_Neteru08-17-04, 03:26 AM | Hee hee. I think that's exactly what the far realms are. These resemble those fungal space travellers from the Cthulhu mythos whose names have conveniently slipped my mind. (no, really) I love these monsters. The more far realm stuff the better.... |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.08-17-04, 12:55 PM | Yes, I have read that story, although it was after coming up with these critters. They're called the Migo, and I still consider my monsters to be radically different from them at least in appearance. The migo are called fungi only as a loose term and in truth defy earthly taxonomy, while the slorgmath't are definately fungal in nature, with spore reproduction, hyphea, and external digestion. The migo appear to be mentally similar enough to communicate easily with humans, indicating the presence of higher wisdom and charisma. They also understand and relate to humans as sentient beings, allbeit sentient beings far inferior to them, but they still clearly understand that they think and feel and reason. |
| incarnadine08-17-04, 02:00 PM | It's funny but Mi-go (or the Fungi from Yuggoth as they are more commonly known) are in fact in every way a fungus. The difference is that they tend to alter themselves drastically using advanced surgical procedures. In fact they tend to remove human vocal cords and attach them to their own body in order to talk... or wear the faces and arms of humans to interact with humans. As for this creature... I think you added way too much stuff to it. I say "stuff" because it just doesn't seem to fit in. Like swallow whole. The creature doesn't even have a bite attack, where does this swallow whole ability come from? It would also make more sense to use a spore burst instead of the acid burst when damaged. As well the fact that these creatures are insane would suggest that the equipment was made by another species. I don't think a race with a Wisdom score of 3 could function well enough to develop such equipment. (also correct me if I’m wrong, but a photonic cannon is another word for a laser cannon) |
| Khaibit_Ema_Neteru08-17-04, 04:22 PM | I don't think they're insane, just that their thought process doesn't really resemble ours in any meaningful way. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.08-17-04, 06:27 PM | Originally posted by incarnadine It's funny but Mi-go (or the Fungi from Yuggoth as they are more commonly known) are in fact in every way a fungus. In fact they tend to remove human vocal cords and attach them to their own body in order to talk... or wear the faces and arms of humans to interact with humans. The migo don't implant vocal cords, they have a machine they use to generate sounds for them. It was specifically mentioned in one of the letters in the story that fungi was simply the closest-fitting taxonomic category for such an alien physiology. There was no mention of them having external digestion or spores. As for this creature... I think you added way too much stuff to it. I say "stuff" because it just doesn't seem to fit in. Like swallow whole. The creature doesn't even have a bite attack, where does this swallow whole ability come from? It has a mouth-like oriface, but the oriface is basically a large slit on their undersides and unsuited for biting. It would also make more sense to use a spore burst instead of the acid burst when damaged. Yes, yes it would. I did not think of that. As well the fact that these creatures are insane would suggest that the equipment was made by another species. I don't think a race with a Wisdom score of 3 could function well enough to develop such equipment. They are not insane, they simply have a radically low awareness and perception. Constructing and designing their equipment would be intelligence. They simply have trouble understanding subtleties and innuendo and the like and underdeveloped common sense. (also correct me if I’m wrong, but a photonic cannon is another word for a laser cannon) Yes, it basically is. I felt like using a different synonym. |
| incarnadine08-18-04, 10:57 AM | Might make more sense to make it an Enveloping attack rather then a swallow whole. Swallowing would suggest a mouth and a bite attack which most other species need to use in a grapple in order to swallow enemies. I also think that a low Wisdom score is not the best way to interpreter the alien mind set of these creatures. If you look at others creatures such as cloakers, they tend to have a high Wisdom and intelligence. I should think that any technologically advanced creature would require intelligence and wisdom. (And Mi-go do surgically attach vocal cords to speak with humans, their native language is just clicks and whistles. You might be mistaking it with the brain jar used on humans) |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.08-18-04, 05:07 PM | No, I'm not mistaken, I just remember talk of them "Fashioning devices with which to speak", and that they did so in a buzzing noise. Envelope would suggest a fluidic or amorphous body. I think swallow whole fits it best. I base many of my far entities slightly of off the color out of space, which is given stats of high intelligence but no wisdom or charisma, and I got the idea of having all mental ability scores either very high or very low to help represent alien mindset. They are simply unperceptive and slow to sense things or understand others, but they are still functional. |

I doubt the tentacles are as flexible as hands. |
| Khaibit_Ema_Neteru08-20-04, 10:36 PM | No reason they couldn't be. Tentacles are very flexible and manipulative. |
| R.M.G.C.L.F.08-21-04, 02:18 AM | In fact tentacles are far more flexible than any hand arm or finger. That's the beauty of tentacles, their an all-purpose appendage. Strong enough to move heavy things, crush prey, and pull oneself along. Dextrous enough for fine manipulation, flexible yet still strong and retaining form, it's a finger, a leg, an arm, a tail, and a whip all in one. |
| Khaibit_Ema_Neteru08-21-04, 12:54 PM | Is it any wonder that octopi are the smartest mollusks on earth? |
| incarnadine08-24-04, 10:44 AM | And Lovecraft does it again:Around equator, one at central apex of each of the five vertical, stave-like ridges are five systems of light gray flexible arms or tentacles found tightly folded to torso but expansible to maximum length of over three feet. Like arms of primitive crinoid. Single stalks three inches diameter branch after six inches into five substalks, each of which branches after eight inches into small, tapering tentacles or tendrils, giving each stalk a total of twenty-five tentacles. -that way they can use the tentacles to manipulate tools. Otherwise they're pretty useless. |
