All the constructs have instructions for construction, in case PCs want to make one of their own; but the question is, do PCs ever craft their own?

Have you, as a PC, ever crafted a construct? Have you ever considered doing it? Or do you find it just a big waste of resources?

It is quite hard for me to convince my DM to let me make any form of construct. Not a surprise seeing as I pour over every book for any sign of tech. But some good low level Ideas are:

Articifer (Craft Homuculus at level 4)
Techsmith. Faiths and Pantheons.
Animate object (Make it permenent later. KILLER SCARF!)
Monster Manual 4, pages 28-33
Also, see if your DM will allow you to create any magical device with a physical function (Such as the Rod of Ropes from Complete Scoundral, or a flask of water that refills each day, or a constant light source, replacement limbs, etc.) as a mechanical device, but weaker and less expensive than the magical version.

And avoid the Gnome Articifer from Faerun. Good idea, but soooo many head aches... (And 60 pound helmates?!)

My forth edit!

Look for the Effigy Master, very cool PrC, and Maester. Not so cool or good.

It's a little of both (good idea and waste of time). like most money-based cohorts, you never get quite enough power for your buck, but a good golem can serve as a makeshift magic-immune fighter/meatsheild.

Having a loyal contruct is also one of the ways to play a sucessful Brain in a Jar PC.
