This annoys me, whats the point of writing the Rokugan setting as the default setting when half the bloody book doesn't even APPLY to Rokugan?

Wouldn't it just have been better to use Kara Tur or some other generic oriental setting?

Rokugan is just plain useless.

Taint immunity of the NEzumi could easily be replaced with "all supernatural climate effects, such as a swamp of sickness, a dire winter, or a desert of moisture sapping."

What's worse is that after putting out the core book, they put out a full Rokugan setting, part of which contradicts or changes stuff that's in the core book.

Trust me, I would have definitely preferred a generic setting with the other campaigns guides coming out separately. Like how with regular D&D, you have your core rules and then campaigns like Faerun, Ravenloft, etc. are sold separately.

In addition to those complaints, fans of old school Legend of the Five Rings don't like d20 Rokugan due to the fact the entire playstyle of d20 system almost completely contradicts the R&K system style.

I was using "they" as a more general term, not pointing at anyone specific (I know AEG did Rokugan-- I own the book).

Where were you went the book first came out (in 2001)? I could have use you in my camp.

Then what do you mean exactly in the following quote? :uh-huh:

What's worse is that after putting out the core book, they put out a full Rokugan setting, part of which contradicts or changes stuff that's in the core book.

I mean, you have to be in a coma to not know that Legend of the Five Rings setting is Rokugan. You have to be in a coma to not know that AEG have been publishing L5R for the longest time. And despite that WotC acquired L5R intellectual properties, they could have just let AEG make Rokugan d20 without WotC stepping on their toes by making it a (loose quote) "default" setting for the Oriental Adventures.

Trust me, as a longtime fan of the original OA, you think I want Rokugan to be the default setting? H-E-double-L, NO! :noway:

Yet, WotC went ahead anyway, knowing they will contradict AEG's L5R established flavor.

All AEG did is put the setting back before WotC messed it up.

I have said this many times and I'll say it again: WotC should never have done Rokugan d20 in the first place. Let AEG do it from the beginning, even without OA.

What I meant was "they"... as in someone put out the OA book (WotC) and then someone else put out Rokugan (AEG). "They" is a term that refers to multiple people and doesn't necessarily have to mean one specific group. It's a bit ambiguous, I know, but that's why I explained it. I was referring to D20 publishing groups in general. :P

Yeah, Wizards is good like that. Considering all the things they do wrong, spelling errors and typos in books (books should be cheaper because the errors are too numerous to count, and I don't remember TSR having that problem, but I could be wrong, which wouldn't shock me), errata (shouldn't exist, get it right or don't it), and poor execution of several base classes (Hexblade, CW Samurai, Ninja, among others), it's impressive that Wizards is still in the game.

Even so, when Wizards does 4e OA, I'd like to see the return of Kara-Tur. I never got a chance to play the setting (could never find it, and I liked Mystara, esp. Hollow World), but I'd kill to see Kara-Tur again. I'd just like to see more of Forgotten Realms than just Faerun. Give me Kara-Tur! :w00t:

Hell, I'd be satisfied seeing Al-Qadim again, but that's not for this board.

Well, the point for the OA Book 3.0 was to have a setting to make DnD more Japanese-y in feel. I never played Kara-Tur, so I don't know what they did; but the OAs introduction to the Clan system makes Human-Only campaigns more flavourful.
It's just like putting references to LotR in DnD books. Die-Hard being a feat Boromir displayed in FotR.
It provides examples and precedents for OA campaigns to follow. Do you need to? No, but the Clan-system allows for Samurai of different styles of play to be had. Just as in Fantasy Japan, you'd have a Yagyu Shinkage Samurai go up against a Niten-Ichi Samurai against a Mugai Samurai. Though they all look alike, they have the same weapons, they have different selections of feats to choose from.

Rokugan was just a book dedicated to Rokugan, where OA just had a hint of it. OA still listed all of the weapons found in Rokugan, more Asian-themed monsters than are listed specificially for Rokugan, etc.

I, personally like it. But perhaps only because it's the only think I've ever known. I don't want to play a Fantasy Japan game where Elves and Gnomes walk about, for some reason, the idea of which disgusts me. It's in a way not "natural" to my play style. OA allows you to, in conjunction with the core books, create a setting where that is possible. There are things not found in Rokugan that I will include anyway; aka Yakuza, Sohei, etc. Why? I feel Rokugan needs a little more variation to make the game different from someone else's.

But your statement is very specific, unless you want to elaborate your statement that begins "What's worse..."

Again, WotC should never have included Rokugan in OA from the beginning. AEG is only trying to sort the mess. If you want to play Rokugan proper, go with AEG material first.

"Japanese-y"???

To quote Arnold from Happy Days, "BAH-hahaha! :evillaugh :evillaugh :evillaugh

FWIW, the new OA retains that same rules flavor as the original OA. If you think Rokugan is just "Japanese-y", then Kara-Tur is more "Asian-Pacific-y."

You need to expand you knowledge that there are more than one asian-flavored published settings, even if it's before your time.

Hi Hanzo187,

Personally, I'd prefer a generic pseudo-setting like the "Points of Light" backdrop that have been talking about for the 4E core rulebooks. Basically, you are given some general hints and cues about world history, events, and places.... but its up to the DM to fill in the blanks however he sees fit. I like that.

Way too much baggage with established and iconic settings, in my opinion.

Laterz.

The statement may be specific, but the word "they" was just referring to the publishers. I'll break it down like this:

What's worse-- as in, what's worse than the fact that they put out an OA core book with a heavy Rokugan influence

is that they-- they being a general reference to d20 publishers

It may not be the most clear grammar, but I knew what I meant and that's all that matters. :P

"They" as in WotC, right? Who else published an Oriental Adventures book (and I don't mean the OA-labeled Rokugan books from AEG) after 2001?

I was talking d20 publishing in general. Yes, WotC put out the original OA book, but you're really just splitting hairs with this. When I say I used "they" as a general term, I meant it as that, so let's drop it, please.
