| DarthVicious07410-27-07, 11:13 PM | Just curious, as both the Kitsune AND the Raccoon Dog or 'Tanuki' were both omitted from the OA handbook despite both being major staples of Japanese mythical lore. |
| draclrd8810-28-07, 11:19 AM | look for the rokugan version of monster manual |
| DarthVicious07410-28-07, 04:26 PM | look for the rokugan version of monster manual Where? It's not in the OA book. Was there another book involving Oriental Monsters? |
| narukagami10-28-07, 09:42 PM | Creatures of Rokugan (http://www.amazon.com/Creatures-Rokugan-L5R-Rpg-Supplement/dp/188795340X), but keep in mind its obviously Rokugan-oriented, so most of the monsters are not 100% (or even 10%, in some cases) accurate to myth. Alternativly there is Jade Dragons and Hungry Ghosts (http://www.amazon.com/Dragons-Hungry-Ghosts-Duane-Maxwel/dp/0970104898/ref=sr_1_1/002-1051380-0277646?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1193622014&sr=1-1), but I can't say I'm a fan of it. |
| Count Arioch the 28th10-29-07, 12:45 AM | For a real tanuki, I'd say just use the stats for a small dog. They're not really that big, and they are in the canid family. |
| DarthVicious07410-29-07, 01:44 PM | My thanks to both narukagami and Count Arioch the 28th. |
| DarthVicious07410-29-07, 01:48 PM | Yeah apparently, Raccoon Dogs in myths are sometimes said to have gargantuan (not D&D size gargantuan) berries (reproductive organs) compared to their bodies. |
| madmonk11-03-07, 10:18 AM | Kitsunemori by Dog-Soul publishing has entries for both, and are based on myth instead of old editions of OA D&D. Heck it's even based entirely on the kitsune, two racial classes for them, and there's the tanuki in the monster section... and the tengu, and the kappa etc. In Official OA D&D? They are rolled in the hengeyokai entry with a lot of animals. |
| NorthernOkie11-06-07, 12:10 AM | Raccoon Dogs are listed in "Table 11: Hengeyokai Creatures" on page 12 of the 1e Oriental Adventures and in Table 1-2, and 1-3 on page 11 and 12 in the 3e OA. Here's a link that may help: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:Yw_-CmG_rJ8J:www.geocities.com/kanegrundar/hengeyokai.rtf+hengeyokai+%22raccoon+dog %22+3e&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=1&gl=us&client=firefox-a Taken from the "Hengeyokai" entry of this site: http://www.geocities.com/kanegrundar/page3.html |
| calronmoonflower11-06-07, 03:18 AM | DHARMA SPIRIT A dharma spirit is not a normal representative of its kind. It has reached a level of self awareness that has enabled it to shed it mortal form and build a body of spirit in its place. CREATING A DHARMA SPIRIT Dharma spirit is an acquired template that can be added to any living creature other than an outsider or an aberration (referred to hereafter as the base creature). . Type: A dharma spirit type changes to outsider and it gains the spirit subtype. Recalculate the base creature’s hit die, skill points, saves, base attack bonus, and feats based on its new outsider type and changes to ability scores. Ability Scores: A dharma spirit has average mental ability scores (Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma), unless its normal scores are higher. Racial Traits: As an outsider a dharma spirit has darkvision to 60 feet (unless the base creature has better dark vision) and it proficient with all simple and martial weapons. It also doesn’t need to eat or sleep, but it must still breathe. A dharma spirit cannot be resurrected except for the true resurrection, wish, or miracle spells. Alignment: Non-intelligent base creatures with the dharma spirit template often become chaotic. Others that gain this template lean toward neutrality. Challenge Rating: Recalculate based upon being an outsider. See page 294 of the Monster Manual for details. NEW FEAT HUMANOID FORM A creature with this feat has learned to simulate the likeness of humanoids. Prerequisite: Dharma Spirit Template, 3 Hit Dice Benefit: You gain the Alternate Form special ability to appear as a humanoid. See page 305 of the Monster Manuel for details. Special: If you have the aquatic sub-type you become amphibious as an extraordinary ability. That is you can survive for an unlimited period in or out of the water, but cannot move out of the water without a base land speed. |
| DarthVicious07411-08-07, 01:40 AM | Okay. What are you talking about? :uh-huh: I'm asking about two creatures that are also in many myths and fables in Japanese folklore, as well as Chinese and Korean. I'm guessing that you're referring to something from the Hindu religion? |
| calronmoonflower11-08-07, 04:01 AM | Fluff is mutable. Keep the mechanics and change the fluff to meet your requirements. |
| Dreamstryder11-14-07, 01:38 AM | Foxes, tanuki, cats, and even spiders & snakes could take on human, object, or monstrous forms if they became very old and (at least sometimes) wise. So could various inanimate objects like umbrellas, but that's animated object in the MM with some alternate forms added if you'd like. |
