| aotrscommander12-17-07, 07:21 PM | I realise I'm probably going to set on fire for this, but you good folks are probably most likely to know the answer, so I'll gird my...um...pelvis...and ask anyway! For a one-shot we're doing over Christmas, I'm attempting to re-flavour cleric spells to have a Naruto flavour. I am trying to name a magical technique to do with eyes (basing around Naruto's Byakugan or Sharigarn) which I can then spin off the names for all the various Detect (et al) spells. As I'm already pushing the limits of cheese (actually, I suspect many of you will think I've not so much pushed the limits and beaten the limit to death in a dark alley with it's own intestines and violated it's grave), I didn't really want to nick the aforemention names wholesale. My language skills suck, and for once, my traditional tactic of splicing together words from a foreign language to make something that sounds right has failed1. It seems as though I can translate single English words into Japanese words in English letters and use babel fish to translate English phrases and words into Japanese syllabaries, I can't translate the latter into anything remotely meaningful (never mind about pronouncation). If anyone can help - either by translating directly or pointing to me to a site that does - I'd be very grateful! (In the former case, I'm thinking along the lines of "crimson/red eye" or "glare of doom" or something generically dubious like that.) And then I'll take my heretical cheese away from your nice, sane board... 1Public Health Warning: Latin and isiZulu speakers are advised to stay away from Aotrs Commander's Dreemaenhyll setting; the grammer may cause serious mental and emotional harm. |

| narukagami12-18-07, 12:16 AM | I just finished Elementary Japanese I last week, so I'd be of little help beyond basic grammar. Sorry. Lord Gwydion, on the other hand, was one poster I can think of off the top of my head who knows Japanese, he lives there after all. Try giving him a PM, he's always been pretty helpful. Blame me if he gets irate (not that he would :P) |
| Gleeman12-18-07, 12:16 AM | I've taken the equivalent of six years of Japanese (accelerated course) and I'd be willing to help out with whatever you need. Any specifics aside from the "eye" spells? "Me", pronounced "may", is the Japanese word for the actual eyeball. "Miru" (meeroo) means "to see" "Shinigyoushi" would be "death gaze/stare" "Mitsukeru" is "to find" |
| aotrscommander12-20-07, 04:46 PM | Thanks, folks! I think, on the basis of time constraints, I'll go with with Shinigyoushi (Which, I am guessing would be pronounced like shin-ee-gyou-she, yes? Ish?) I considered the translation of swirky pink-eye, in homage to Naruto the Abridged Series but decided that was a bit too silly even for me. Probably. |
| meigin12-22-07, 04:59 PM | Here is another translation you might consider, Metsuke - which loosely translates "line of sight", or "field of vision" Aka - red Tou Kurenai - crimson Jaho - black magic / sorcery. Hope these offer another perspective for you. |
