Has anybody done this?
My group is starting a side game while the regular DM regroups. I've taken a liking to vanara. If you notice, I asked recently about a Monkey King character. But a random character doodle turned into a new idea; a vanara artificer. Seems like a possibility as it's not an OA game.

But now I'm wondering what would an artificer be like in an OA game?
Would you do it in your game?

There are no artificers in the asian-flavored regions of my campaign world.

The reason for that is that there are no PC artificers in the world. The only artificers on the planet happen to be grell.

Not unless I want a very high-magic setting, like OA steampunk. While wizards may sometimes create magic items, artificers specialize in it - so if your campaign feature artificers, it will probably be awash in magic items. That is likely to change its focus a lot imo... I personally consider the iconic OA campaign as a rather low-magic one.

I personally consider the iconic OA campaign as a rather low-magic one.I can agree with that.

To me the artificer is more of a gadget maker than magic item creator, like the inventor from the Pulp Heroes setting. And from what I've learned, China had made further progress in the sciences than the west, such as the invention of the clock and an extremely accurate earthquake detector. And lets not forget gunpowder coming from the east. So in this theme I can see an artificer working in OA.

Perhaps, but that would require a serious reflavoring of the artificer. I consider it a class specializing in the creation of magic items, from rings to weapons to wands. IF you want a class that specializes in the creation of nonmagic items that do something similar, you will have to change it a little. The Gnome Artificer PrC from Magic of Faerun might, ironically enough, be more appropriate.

The only BIG change to make an artificer into a "gadget maker" is vastly expanding the range of what wondrous items can do, which requirea lot of DM adjucation and will resultin many "take-backs" due to overpowered items, but could be pretty fun. So items that are less like Spell X/Y day, and more like the Apparatus of Kwalish.

Go with it, OA is a unique setting and what's better than a (reasonably rare) character with a flair for the exotic. If played well this character will develop some interesting items for the campaign.

Items don't have to be just tech a little magical infusion with good controls will keep flavour and balance working well.
