Hello,
I'm thinking of playing a character inspired by Monkey King.
Which class fits best?

I'm assuming the character from Naruto that aids the Third Hokage in his fight against Orochimaru. Man I need a life.

But to answer GEEKAZOID's question, I'd go with monk, and possibly a ninja class. But I'd only use him as a powerful, but summon-able NPC.

The Monkey King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey_King) is a character from Journey to the West.

As for a build. He's a gish of some sort combining spellcasting with martial prowess.

He's githyanki?
That's interesting.

How does gish translate into OA classes?

Obviously he'll be a vanara.
I'd like to keep the staff.
Shaman?
Wu-jen as class?

What makes you think he'd be a gish? I'd put him more as a warrior, perhaps with some divine spellcasting. Still, his feats seem much too "physical" for a proper warrior/mage imo.

He use Taoist magic and fights very well. His magic is defiantly learned rather than divine in nature. To fully emulate the Monkey King he would have to be epic. He fought with many deities at once and held his own.

Generally he uses transmutation, abjuration, and a few enchantments. I've never heard of him using conjuration, necromancy, evocation, or divination.

I don't doubt his fighting skills. As for the source of magic, technically his being was supernatural enough that he could be using his own "divine" powers. Wasn't there a class that did something like that - Mystic or some such?

More like he's fought too many deities and won. You are right though he doesn't use evocation or divination. I don't have the book on me right now but the main things you need to emulate would be his clones, shape shifting, invunerablity (exceedingly high DR and resistances), his cloud trapeze, and his staff (artifact). Those are what he usually uses.

As said before using him as a powerful summon would be the way to go. He would be too powerful for really anything else. I may be giving him too much credit though, he is one of my favorite fictional characters.

Edit: You should probably just make him an outsider with these abilities. Really no class I know of would allow for the insane powers he possesses.

I remember a legacy weapon called the Royal Monkey Staff on this board somewhere. It could be used to help design a version of his staff.

That staff is neat. I think that the size increasing abilities are good. It should also have the ability to hide on the user's body since he usually carried it as an embroidery earring. Also the staff was noted to be extremely heavy so that would be reflected in the item. I would still say that making it an artifact would work better.

If I run this character he will start at 4th level.
Would a spell caster fit better or would straight up monk work best?
What about sohei?

I don't know the legend that well, but I'd say he's far from lawful. I'd also say that the class seems a little underpowered, but I haven't honestly tried it. Er... has anyone?

Going from a battle Sorcerer and then pricking up the Enlightened Fist prestige class should work.

If you don't mind homebrew material I made a version of the monk that without the alignment restrictions and includes some spellcasting.

Does anyone the old Monkey Magic TV show? It's also what Dragonball is based on.

Monk with some levels of sorcerer, the hardest problem is the super strength and immortality. It would be an interesting character.
For those interested in the Monkey King here is the first two episodes of Monkey from youtube.

Thanks for these links blade265, it was good to watch a bit of Monkey Magic again.
Brings back memories of my youth.
The first two episodes were always the hardest to catch too when it was on because they never advertised much before it started.

The old O D & D rules had a Monkey King in the monster manual.
(With a Tiger King and Ox King, I think).
Anyway, the Monkey King used a Rod of Lordly Might.
You might want want to modify a Rod of Lordly Might to suit your purposes for a Monkey character as well.

I'm currently reading a translation of the Taoist interpretation of the Journey to the West
(second reading, plus watching the Monkey Magic show as a kid, and reading various other shorter versions).

I think that a Sorcerer/ Fighter/ Rogue multiclass best suits the Monkey king providing you chose spells in league with Sun Wu Kong's (Monkey's) powers, max out your fighter's staff and unarmed fighting and focus your rogue on stealth rather than stealing.

However, considering that 3.5 nerfs multiclassing, you might be looking for a single class alternative.

In that case, I'd pick fighter or Rogue, and try to buy magical items to give you Sun Wu Kong's magical abilities. I'd go fighter for the extra feats, focus on funky martial arts and give him a high dex. (Especially since you said something about 4th level and my interpretation is that you want a Monkey-inspired character not the actual Monkey King.

A girdle of giant's strength, bracers of defense, rod of lordly might and boots of striding and springing should be on your character's shopping list. Followed by some sort of true-seeing, knock spells, polymorph spells, mirror image, summon monster (monkeys), cloud flying (cloud chariot is 9th level OD & D spell).

Talk to your DM about designing a prestige class or something.

Wong Fei Hong was a real person.
Chun Hyang is a Korean legend.

Looks them up yourself and make something that suits your campaign.

i'd be more interested in discussing how to make characters for Tripitaka, Pigsey and Sandy. :)
