Dragon Magazine issue #318 has the 3.5 OA update. [Archive] - Wizards Community

Maybe seeing that title on the page will keep people from asking.

Also, to rant further,
The Complete Warrior samurai is not a 3.5 update of the OA class by the same name, the Complete Arcane Wu Jen and the Complete Divine Shugenja may very well be though.
The CW Kensai is not a 3.5 update of the OA kensei, they are totally and completely different classes.
OA is not a generally good system to duplicate anime like Rurouni Kenshin or Inuyasha, you're better off using BESM, trust me, many have tried and failed.

Rant here, or turn it into an OA FAQ 2.0, whichever you wish.

Seen as you don't seem to be opposed to non-WotC systems...

BESM is probably the best, seen as it is made for anime, but I like Iron Heroes.

With that, you can build characters at a much more reasonable (i.e. non-epic) levels with most of the same stats. I think I got Kenshin at about 15th level or so, and he was very similar to what he is supposed to be. I made a similar standard D&D version at 25th level.

I need to buy that now... darn consumerism...

nor is the Complete Arcane Wu Jen [a 3.5 update of the OA class by the same name], or the Complete Divine Shugenja [a 3.5 update of the OA class by the same name].
As far as I can see, both are updates of the old classes.

As far as I can see, both are updates of the old classes. They most likely are, looking back at the books they aren't as drasticly different as the two samurai. Thus the (both up for speculation)
But the fact the designers admitted the Samurai wasn't an update still leaves a bit of skepticism in my mind about the other oriental classes of the complete series.

The Samurai has appeared so many times it's getting pretty sad.

Sword and Fist had one as a prestige.

OA has a base class.

Complete Warrior has a base class.

You could, technically, end up with a Samurai 5/Samurai 5/Samurai 10 build that way. :P

I really need to get Dragon 318, as I'm trying to put together a 3.5 swordmaster that's primary OA. It's a pity that Wizards didn't feel that it was important enough to make web material.

But must they have Ghost Strike and Ghost Sight? Hence, "ghostbusting."

And while he may or may not have a buddy to help flank, Sneak Attack is what they do. I'm sorry, but this ninja class needs work, just not as much as Complete Warrior Samurai.

* gasp *

Unless, this is a "Western" version of the ninja class. Boy, those "haole" westerners in mainland US have quite an imagination about the Asian culture, with the exception of James Wyatt (at least he studied there).

What's that saying? Ah! "Don't pee on my foot and tell me it is raining."

It's a good thing that this issue features 3.5e update of OA, pirates, and dinosaurs.

Genius. Sheer genius.

For crying out loud, there seem to be more bumps here than genuine posts... I didn't really like the CW samurai but I suppose we'll have to see when a 3.5 OA book goes out.
And as for anime characters, I once saw a 3.0 versions of most RK characters, and the stronger guys were around lvl 16-17 fighters or fighter/rogues. It probably won't be the same thing (they had a lot of custom feats), but it may be possible to do most samurai-ish characters under epic levels. Has anyone actually tried it in a campaign?

The designers specificly said so themselves.

You know, I'm constantly amazed when someone looks at something, reads it, and then offers something completely unnecessary to the conversation when they could have simply said nothing instead of making a big deal about it.

Yes. This thread's been bumped. Why? Because people can't get it through their freakin' heads that Dragon Magazine #318 has the ONLY 3.5 update of OA published by Wizards of the Coast.

The WizO's seem to hate the thought about giving us a sticky for the topic and while its in the FAQ thread, people are either too lazy or lack the mental capacity to check it before posting. Until they do, this thread needs to be bumped.

So am I. Good issue. Never read the ninja class article--I really couldn't bring myself to care about a base ninja class (yes, I'm one of them). I started compiling revised spell lists for the OA classes based on the 3.5 update and CArc & CDiv after I picked up the issue. Don't remember if I ever finished it. I guess I'll look into once I get back to Florida.

I don't think I said that the CW Samurai was equal to the OA version. We'll have to see what happens when a 3.5 OA book goes out - if it does - in order to see how WotC has reshaped their "Oriental" version of the class for the new edition, as from what I gather most people here prefer the OA version of the Samurai class over the CW one.

And, by the way, saying something unnecessary is the same as bumping. So you might as well spare me the bile, Hochiu... ;)

Technically, Paizo is the current publisher of the two aforementioned magazines.

But since Paizo is mainly consist of former TSR/WotC periodical department staff employees -- when the D&D publisher was circulating said magazines prior to Paizo -- and they have a good connection with the current publisher (WotC), most articles are written by WotC folks, be it in-house or contracting writers.

The 3.5e OA article in question is actually written by the OA author himself, James Wyatt.

Jesse Decker wrote the ninja class article in that same issue, which is now memorialized in his work, Complete Adventurer.

Since the 3rd Ed version of OA is based off of L5R, I say the chance of this happening are 0, even moreso with L5R 3rd Edition just coming out based off of d10 mechanics like 1st.

Well, really only the Nezumi race, the Shugenja core class, a few monsters, and some PrCs (and supplement PrCs don't usually get added anyway) are Rokugan specific.

Korobokuru, Spirit Folk, Hengeyokai and Vanare are not part of Rokugan, and could be added to the SRD with no legal problems. Nezumi could likely be changed enough to qualify as well (although it wouldn't bother me if they didn't make the cut).

The Samurai would only need to have the names of the Clans removed (changed to "schools" or non-totem animal "clan" names or something similar). The Sohei, Shaman and Wu Jen aren't Rokugan specific in the least. So again, they could be added. And if the Shugenja were given a treatment like that in CD (more or less the same class, just with a bit different spell list and non-Rokugan clan related spell schools) it could make the cut as well.

Arms, armor and equipment? Nothing that AEG could sue for there. Feats? Okay, remove the Ancestor Feats (or just rename them) and they're good to go. If they could get rid of Mordenkainen, Tenser, Melf, and all the other Greyhawk wizards from the SRD spell list, they could get rid of the Mirumotos and Daidojis from the Ancestor Feats.

So then what would AEG have to sue over?

Well, the chance of that happening is slim and none, but not for the reason you stated. Trust me, it's very easy to separate those annoying Rokugan-specific text wrappings from the base OA mechanics. I was able to do so after seeing -- and later retching -- the CW samurai class. :smirk:

As far as animae goes there are some better systems then big eyes small mouth. Sengoku is very cool for a more authentic feel for fighting as you can learn tons of different styles and not everyone wears armor. Tales of the Samurai, a generic D20 book also loans itself more to the unarmored samurai and other asian chars, cutting people down all Kenshin style. And of course there is L5R also.

I like the orginal L5R rules and the new "3rd edition NON d20 rules" but I do like some of the more generic sourcebooks for it such as Way of the Ninja. However L5R ninja are vastly different from CA Ninja. They are more fighter like as far as weapons and BAB. I was wondering if I should allow anything out of there for CA Ninja? Probably going to avoid the Void Powers and kata but there are some general feats that are good. Though if I use the action point idea from Ebberon (Or Unearthed Arcana for that matter, I could perhaps allow spending a "Chi Action Point" to use those powers? Would that work?) Though if I allowed those it would make it unfair for non Ninja classes or non Rokugan classes because their is no Way of the Sohei, Wu Jen or other OA classes that arent in Rokugan.

Got a conundrum.

I'm compiling my own revision of 3.5e OA -- for my own personal use, mind you -- when I came across a ... conflict.

The Dragon 318 article stated I should use the 3.5e Update Booklet for the revised Community Domain spell list, BUT that material have been superceded by Complete Divine and (from what I hear) Spell Compendium.

To understand what I mean (and see the various spell lists), I summarized it here (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=808980).

From that thread, the consensus goes to the newly released sources. But I have to wonder, is that domain spell list (from Complete Divine) appropriate for Oriental Adventures?

The real question is if it's appropriate for your campaign world. I'd use my own judgement. About 3/4 of WOTC published material I ignore anyway.

Without alot of custom skills/feats/classes, its nigh impossible to get a accurate duplication of most anime characters under level 17. The problem is, when compaired to the standard of d&d's rules, these custom anime things have a tendancy to be broken as hell.

The psionics board has a whole thread on statting out naruto characters using reflavored psionics. Dispite being just students, not even full-fledged skilled "ninjas", not a single one is under level 20.

A problem I notice when people try to do adaptations of these characters is that they try to stat them out at the level they are shown in the anime. But, let's face it. Rurouni had to study forever to become the man killer. You don't just wake up and say, "Hey, I'm gonna be a 15th level samurai today."
Also I don't see why samurai are so hard to get right in D&D. You may need some special feats, but let your players bring them to you. "You want what? Well, draw up a feat path that shows me how you get there, but make it realistic, and we'll figure something out."
Your players should be involved with their characters. If they don't have the moxy to come to you and say," I want to be different", then they probably aren't (Different, that is). If this is really what you want, do the footwork yourself, and put the players up against your creation. Drum up some interest.
(Player: "How can he do that?- DM: "He mastered the technique himself. It's called Wind Razor." -Player: "Why can't I do it?" -DM: " Because he hasn't taught it to anyone. You'd have to get the training from him. If you want to do that, I suggest you stop trying to kill him, and make friends.")
Remember, this is fantasy. We should be able to create characters that can do incredible, impossible things. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't have to work for them. The point is, who cares if the characters in anime storylines start out at 17th level? They had to be first level sometime.:D Play 'em from there.
