The Hanafuda Mystic is a class I designed specifically for my campaign world, (partially inspired by Genjuro from samurai showdown) as such it may not be appropriate for most campaigns. Those who have kept track of my work are probably aware I am not a big fan of prestige classes which is why this one was wrote as a base class, that and I wanted a base class specifically for one of my evil clans in my oriental setting. I am sharing this write up with the community because my group has really enjoyed the presence of them in my game, and perhaps with some necessary adapting a DM can also benefit by adding them into his world. This class is a merger of the Hexblade and Complete Warrior Samurai, with a few extra tweaks. As always feedback, good or negative is welcome.

Hanafuda Mystic

The Hanafuda Mystic is warrior initially trained simular to that of a samurai, however they are taught a different path. The Hanafuda Mystic is trained with a sword style based on the Koi Koi card deck (Oriental Tarot Deck). This bizarre style a first involves merely unusual strike patterns, but as they progress deeper into their teachings are able to bestow the misfortunes of the unfavorable Koi Koi cards that they mimic. The Hanafuda Mystics are also taught how to strike fear into the souls of their enemies, they control the battlefield by bestowing misfortune and fear.

Adventures: In a non-Thalamar setting the Hanafuda Mystics can serve as a unique clan, practitioners of a forbidden or long lost art, or a clan with a unique style, however they work best when portrayed villainous.

Abilities: Strength is important as a melee oriented class, as is a decent constitution score, charisma determines some of their more important skills as well as many of their special abilities.

Alignment: Any non-good, in Thalamar they are limited to members of the Ayane clan whom are evil.

Religion: In a non-Thalamar setting Hanafuda Mystics would most likely follow darker gods, most likely of war such as Hextor.

Background: This is a DMs call when adding them to his campaign world, in Thalamar the Hanafuda Mystics are elite warriors of the Ayane clan, a clan that has been segregated to an island of squalid living conditions, who are occasionally able to return to the mainland and attempt to seek revenge against the clans that banished them.

Races: In Thalamar the Hanafuda Mystics are limited to Humans of the Ayane clan, in a non-Thalamar setting it is still unlikely to see non-humans, but this is solely the DMs discretion.

Other Classes: Hanafuda Mystics serve a warriors role and work best with low moral classes.

Starting Equipment: The Hanafuda Mystic is usually given a katana and wakizashi by his master once his training is complete, these will usually be of masterwork quality, however certain conditions may prevent the weapons from falling into the proper owners hands (or simply not made at all). However unlike a samurai, the Hanafuda Mystic rarely has the emotional attachment or sense of honor with his weapon.

Fatal Fortune: The trademark ability of the Hanafuda Mystic is strikes of ill karma, as a standard action the Hanafuda Mystic selects a foe and makes an attack towards him, the chosen target is marked by a large spectral tapestry, if struck the tapestry is cut revealing the image of an unfavorable Koi Koi card and the target suffers a -2 penalty to attack roles, skill checks, saving throws and ability checks for 1 day. there is no saving throw but spell resistance does apply, the Hanafuda Mystic treats fatal Fortune as a level 1 spell, with his charisma modifier as the appropriate ability score and his levels of Hanafuda Mystic as his caster level. The Hanafuda Mystic must announce he is using this ability before the attack role is made as a failed hit waste the attempt.

Staredown: The sinister glare of the Hanafuda Mystic can bring weakness in the strongest of hearts, when using the intimidate skill to demoralize his opponents he gains a +4 bonus.

Blood for Blood: The Hanafuda Mystics are able to unleash spiteful vengeance against there foes who succeed in harming them in combat. During the round of the attack or the following round the Hanafuda Mystic may, as a swift action, select a foe who has harmed him, he losses 5 hit points as the wound burns with dark chi, the next attack against that foe will do an additional 3d6 damage. Blood for Blood has no effect on the wrong opponent, and at the end of the round if the target has not been struck the attempt is wasted.

Sinister Shadow: The umbral pool beneath the Hanafuda Mystics feat can halt the morale of the foes who fall within it's path, at the beginning of each round as a free action, the Hanafuda Mystic selects a combat square adjacent to him, any foe within this square takes a -2 penalty to attacks and ac.

Blades of Shame: The mark of taint and evil has stained the grip of the Hanafuda Mystic, any weapon wielded by the Hanafuda Mystic counts and Dishonorable and Evil for the purpose of bypassing damage reduction.

Stretching Shadow: The Hanafuda Mystics shadow now seeks foes beyound the masters reach to fill with fear, the Shadow of the Hanafuda Mystic now effects up to three squares which may be adjacent to the Hanafuda Mystic, or another square occupied by the his shadow. The Hanafuda Mystic arranges these as desired as a free action at the beginning of each round.

Greater Fatal Fortune: The Hanafuda Mystics ability to spread bad luck has improved, as a standard action the Hanafuda Mystic selects one or two foes within melee range, if he selects two both are marked with a spectral tapestry and he makes an individual attack against both of them at his highest attack bonus, bestowing the -2 penalty to both, or selects one foe who will be marked with two tapestries and a single attack made towards him. As before no save is applicable, but spell resistance will apply, the greater fatal fortune is treated as a 4th level spell.

Mass Staredown: The mere presence of the Hanafuda Mystic becomes unnerving on the battle field, as a standard action the Hanafuda Mystic can make an intimidate check to demoralize all foes within a 30 foot radius of him.

Seeking Shadow: The shadow of the Hanafuda Mystic gains a hunger for terror and is able to break away from him to seek it's prey, the shadow moves as a free action up to the Hanafuda Mystics own movement.
It still occupies up to three squares, but they must be adjacent to each other. The shadow, once separated, is treated as a spell effect of 1/4 the mystics level, and can be dispelled. If dispelled the Hanafuda Mystic loses 100 exp, and must wait 24 hours before his shadow reforms. Because the shadow has no rel substance it cannot create flanking situations.

Aura of Misfortune: The Hanafuda Mystic is able to surround himself in a veil of deception, as a free action that doe not provoke an attack of opportunity the Hanafuda Mystics visage becomes harder to discern, blurred and distorted. His is treated as having a 20% miss chance, is attacked and missed a blank tapestry appears in the location struck and fades away. The aura remains for 3 rounds plus the Hanfuda Mystics charisma modifier.

Improved Staredown: The Hanafuda Mystics mere glance invokes a sense of terror in the hearts of his foes, he may now make an intimidate check to demoralize his foes as a move action instead of a standard.

Sentient Shadow: The shadow of the Hanafuda Mystic now has gained partial substence and is able to actualy harm the Hanafuda Mystics foes. The Shadow is treated as having hp equal the Hanafuda mystics level x charisma modifier, and can be hurt by spells and magical weapons, if harmed it recovers hp at the rate of 1 plus the Hanafudas Mystics charisma modifier every hour. Each round in addition to it's movement it can make a single touch attack using the Hanafuda Mystics base attack bonus, if successful it deal 3d6 cold damage. Because the sinister shadow possess substance it can create flanking situation.

Dire Fatal Fortune:The Hanafuda Mystic is able to spread his ill karma further, he may now select up to three targets within melee range for his fatal fortune, as before using a standard action and making a melee attack at his highest attack bonus against each opponent bestowing a -2 penalty to all of them struck, he may also select two opponents bestowing a -4 to one and a -2 to another or a single foe bestowing a -6. Spell resistance applies, and Dire fatal fortune is treated as a level 7 spell.
