Anyone ever run anything based on the historic Shaolin Temple and its (supposed) betrayal by the White Eyebrow?

Haven't thought about it, but might be fun thing to work on and a reason to watch even more hong kong period films.

I am surprisd this topic didn't generate more chatter. The Chinese character in "Kill Bill 2" was modeled directly from the legend of the White Eyebrow.

After beeing there a month ago I can at least say that the temple would be an awesome area for a camapign. 5 secluded areas, where you have to go through level 1 to reach level 2 etc. And it all happens in the middle of absolutely nowhere.

So Unundindur can you give us a few details about your travels? Some of that might make some nice color in a OA adventure or setting.

Well, its hard to describe the layout in words but I can try with a general description.

First of all, the temple is located in the middle of absolutely nowhere (Shaolin means "wood by the mountain" or something like that). The name of Shaolin is actually just the name of the area.

The temple is located ca. 2 hours drive from the nearest city, and the area is hilly, with mountains within a few kilometers in each direction. The area is partially plains, and partially wood.

When I was there it was cold, and slightly rainy (not the norm though!).

The actual temple (of old) was located right where the plains hit the wood, and the area sorrounding the temple was made into a huge and beautiful park.

The temple is easiest to describe as 5 smaller walled compounds placed righ after each other. After you passed through the first compound you walk up a stair and and at a higher "level". All in all there were 5 such levels, and the abbot lived at level 3 if I remember correctly.

It can also be mentioned that right outside the abbots house was a huge bell, which if attacked the abbot would sound and everyone in hearing reach (that would be FAAR!) would scramble to his place to repell the attackers.

In the highest level there was a huge statue of Buddha, which have been dragged there from Mongolia (and from India before that...). It is one of 3 very important figures of Buddha as I understood it.

Regarding who lives where etc. it should be noted that very few monks lived "in" the temple. The monks lived in their own quarters some hundred meters away, along the road.

Opposed to what one would beleive the most experienced monks were not pressent at the temple. Only moderately experienced monks trained and "guarded" (we are in 2007...) the temple. The real veterans can be found in the woods and mountains far and wide around the temple, where they hone thir skills in secluded environments.

As one of my teachers told me, the year before he was going up in the hillside and suddenly saw a really old man doing some obscene moves at a tree (made holes in it with his fingers).

Up on one of hte higher mountains/hills around the temple was also a special statue of buddahs head in white stone. We didn't get any more spesific info about that though.

I can imagine that beeing quite a challenge for a PC group, but I hope this info was of some use :)
