I asked in the class thread and didn't get a response so I'm hoping you guys have enough experince with them.

I'm thinking about playing one sooner or later, preferably as the only arcane caster in the party, and I wanted to know what people thought of them.

Well, I don't play OA, but I've used the Wu Jen class from Complete Arcane. It plays just like the wizard, but with more flavour. The spells are interesting too. A nice change from the standered Fireball, Magic Missile etc.

Do you mean Complete Arcane? I think they are about the same. It might be a bit weaker - those secrets are imo no better than bonus feats - but otherwise it's pretty similar, just with some different spells.

Thanks Shaman, fixed the mistake.
Seriously though, the only way to find out is to give it a try. Mechanically it isn't any worse than the wizard so you're not losing out. It's simply a matter of prefrence.

To reiterate what everyone else is saying:
Yeah, its pretty much an element themed Wizard with a neat mechanical and roleplaying twist with the taboos. They're really fun to play and are pretty balanced, mechanically.

Weaker than a wizard, actually, since it has access to less spells. Particularly the spell compendium. Wizards have access to all the Wu Jen spells, but not Vice Versa. The only Wu Jen Exclusive spells are in Complete Arcane and OA.

I was playing one in a campaign that I started tonight, basically it is similer to a wizard, but they have access to different spells -they do have a smaller spell list-, but they can access some spells as earlier levels then the wizard or sorceror.

As for being weaker for not being giving updates from new source books you can always ask the DM if a certain spell fit in with class. I believe that the SC mention this appoarch. I believe it was something to the effect of all spells with element (minus air) wood and metal themes.

It's slightly weaker than the Wizard, alot more fun to play.

Tip: Talk to your Watchful Spirit, make it different than you. Give it a background story.
