India? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-07-07, 09:12 PM Hello all, currently working on a campaign that involves an India like setting I've done a reasonable amount of reading involving Indian history/culture however was looking for more crunch stuff. Is there any RPG books out there that cover India esque settings. The time period is equivalent to Alexander's campaigns. I've created a rough equipment list from some research on Indian weapons (mainly renaming mace a gurj or quarterstaff a lathi and incorporating some weapons from the PHB like the khukri). I have looked over the web enhancement for Oriental Adventures while useful was wondering if anyone knew of any resources out there? As I said mostly looking for some crunch stuff but if anyone knows any good resources for fluff always interested too (particularly pics of art or regions).

Also Alqadim/Kara-tur has an Indian-esque country as well that you may want to look in to...

If you find any better sources please list them here... I for one would be interested.

02-07-07, 11:53 PM India has such a rich epic mythology. It would work very well for a fantasy setting. It is surprising more has not been done. TSR did Al-Quadim, Kara Tur, and even Maztica. Other third parties have done Africa- Nyambe.
There is a Web enhancement for Oriental Adventures called Mahasarpa. Look it up under Web enhancements for Oriental adventures.
There is one other supplement that I know of. It is called Mindshadows. Kevin Brennan and James Majiszwski author it. Mythic Vistas- Green Ronin Publishing publishes it.
This offers an Island continent, of Indian flavor and was published in 2003. Psionics is heavily intertwined into the setting.

02-08-07, 12:14 AM Nyambe is a nice setting and has some interesting things especially cultural gems.. banana beer?

Alot of the things in Nyambe can be found in an India typ setting... I recomend this book as well.

The Rokugan equivalent in the Ivory Kingdom but the only refernce I have found is in the Complete arms and equipment guide, and even then its only 3 or 4 pages of stuff you can probably find in other d20 books or online.

02-08-07, 11:19 AM Afghanistan: d20 has a tiny amount of stuff relevant to that period. The main thrust of the book is modern stuff (second half of the 20th century), but it does note that Afghanistan has been an interesting place throughout history, and presents about 1 page on playing a campaign set roughly 100 BC.
Not much crunch there, though.

It IS good, but laking. Mahasarpa and Naranjan are better. However, Sahasra is ootable for material for your onw campaign setting, as are indian/tibetan items and such that are published is small quantities by... I don't remember :s
Items of Inia or soemthing is the name, they used to sell it in ENworld

02-09-07, 07:33 PM Many thanks for the responses and info. Very helpful. The Mindshadows supplement sounds interesting as especially I had some psionics in mind with the campaign. From what I've seen of the Folkloric Supplement on the pdf preview I wasn't overly impressed. Well thanks.

02-10-07, 11:51 AM Just to throw this out. If you dont mind cherry picking some things there are numerous sources that offer things that would -fit- a mythic India setting without actualy being for a mythic India setting.

of the top of my head:

Magic of Incarnum: Love it or hate it the magic system is loosely based on the beliefs in the power of charkras.

The Year's Best d20 Vol. 1: Ironically I bought this yesterday in the bargin bin for 5.00. It includes a Yogi base class with some associated feats.

Hyperconcious: Mainly a psionics book, includes a Chakra Savant prestige class. Pretty flavorful.

OF course, here's a picture to inspire you. The man is a Rakashasa named Ravana. The girl is Sita. The bird that Ravana dewinged is Jatyu -- which is either the King of Vultures, or the Lord of Eagles, depending on which Ramayana you read.

I think the coolest presentation of Indian mytholygy that really captures the edge of an Indian campaign setting would be Peter Brooks' Mahabharata - a British/French television production which I think ran for 12 hours total. It's a very gritty rendering of Indian culture and magic. It's the Lord of The Rings for me in terms of Indian Medieval Epics.
