The prequel covers the period between Monkey's birth from stone egg, to when he was trapped under the mountain of the elements. I plan the prequel to be 3 sessions long. We have played the first session, which everyone said was fun. Knowing that everyone would want to be Monkey, I thought of doing this prequel with a bit of a twist. The game starts with 5 super monkeys. One of them is the real monkey, the others are imposters. No one knows how the imposters go there, they could be a test from the Gods, a trick from a demon, there are as many theories as their are monkeys in the troop (40). For the characters, I got the money out of MM1, advanced it to a 3 HD creature so that its size category went up to small, then awakened it with the spell. (random intelligence roll, +1d3 to cha, + 2 HD, type changes to magical beast.) Magical Beast is a great class with a fighters BAB and a Ranger's saves, Dark vision and low light vision. I'm also using the Wounds and Vitality point system instead of hit points. I let the characters have some gimmes to individualise their characters. For example 4 points to put into their abilities with the maximum of 3 going into one ability, (they also get +1 to an ability of their choice because they are 5 HD). Add two class skills of your choice (keeping it within the flavour of the game though). The monkeys are magical creatures so they age like elves too. Monkey relates to the element of fire, so everyone rolled randomly for one of the following bloodlines: Fire elemental, Efreeti, Fire Giant or just a Race of Fire. (All from Unearthed Arcana). |

These included: A level in Noble (like the one in Conan RPG) for completing the Water Curtain Cave mission. A level in Barbarian, Rogue, Fighter or Ranger when they wandered in Jambu for 9 years. A level in Monk when they started their training with Sabhuti. A level in another class depending on the path they chose to study with Sabhuti. I know this makes the characters heavily multiclassed but it is a low magic campaign and I'm working on ways to improve multiclassing in the 3.5 system. Also sometimes they get spell-like abilities that fit in with the Monkey story. E.g. cloud chariot is a 9th level spell. I will give that to the Monkeys later for accomplishing a mission but I might nerf it a bit. |
